Okay, so i am having an issue with the rear parking sensors on my 2015. It seems like now they don’t want to work well when it’s raining. If I put it into reverse if it doesn’t work it will show an error on the screen with an x through the rear parking sensors and make an error sound. The front ones work fine. Could this have to do with some recent rear bumper work I had? Also, the little rubber piece around the sensors is peeling. The dealer told me those are essential for proper operation because they keep them in angle, but the shop that did the work I went back to said that “it’s not important”. So is that rubber around important? Also, I think one of the sensors is slightly out of angle so that may be the cause. I told the shop this and asked if they had this happen before and they said not often.

I should mention last year in 2022 while driving in the sleet the rear parking sensors didn’t work and errored out, but I understand because there was probably some sleet on the sensors. Other than that, it has not errored out at all between that time and before the repair.

I’m attaching a picture of one of the rear parking sensor and one of the front so you can see what I’m talking about with the rubber around it.

Any help is appreciated!

I don't think that is rubber. I think it is part of the plastic housing of the sensor. Once that's cracked and water gets in the sensor, it's toast.

Okay. The thing is the sensors only don’t work properly when it’s raining. When it’s dry, they seem to work fine. The only other time I had an issue was February 2022 when we had sleet in Texas and it errors out once in reverse, other than that, no issues until after the repair. So that seal is to prevent water entry? I told the shop about how they are supposed to be there and they said it “didn’t matter”. Can you replace that piece without replacing the whole sensor or would it have to be an entirely new sensor? Could have this piece fallen off while they were removing and reinstalling the sensors for rear bumper work? Also, I don’t recall it was peeling before the repair (but I’m not for sure) and I have some pictures of the rear bumper before the repair but im not sure enough they would be clear enough to use for evidence and if they would even do anything (the guy said it doesn’t happen often so that doesn’t get my hopes up). Because ain’t no way I’m paying $200 just for diagnostics at the dealer.

So should I try to see if I can show the shop the image of before and see if I can get them to replace the sensors? I have to wait a few weeks anyways before they can do anything because their booking a few weeks out?

I guess I’ll just have to go along and see what happens. Hopefully the shop will at least try.

Anything in particular I should tell the shop?

If someone can find me a TSB explains the importance of these seals for the rear parking sensors, that would be great as it seems like I’ll need to show them some Hyundai documentation that it’s important because apparently it seems like they might not be able to read it themselves.

Sorry for this long complicated post but hopefully this makes since.

I have never seen that part separate from the sensor, or a sensor without that part. I don't think that they separate.

That inner circle that you see that makes you think this is a seal around the part is actually part of the ultrasonic transducer and has to be there for the sound to come out (and go back in). The image below may make this clearer.

Okay, so wait, what are you trying to say? I know that the inside circle is the actual sensor. But I’m still confused as to what exactly that piece does. Are you saying it’s simply part of the sensor and is attached? Because i thought it was just a ring around it?

Also, should I try to get them replaced if I potentially have evidence that it wasn’t peeling off before?

The damaged sensor should be replaced. Do not let them tell you it is not important. It is part of the sensor, but it may be allowing water to get into that sensor. As for your issue when you had sleet, it was probably normal. If a sensor gets blocked by sleet and/or snow, they cannot function properly.

Of course. That’s why I’m asking if anyone can find Hyundai documentation that states that they’re important so that they’ll be more likely to believe me. The dealer has told me (both parts and service) that that little outside ring is to hold the parking sensor so it doesn’t get out of angle.

That is probably true, but if it is damaged, the sensor may be getting water into it.

Well, should I just tell them what Hyundai old me and how they are important for the proper operation and life of the sensors? Just talked to the dealer and they said the only way to get that part would be new sensors.

I guess we’ll see what happens.

Mine do weird things from time to time... The rears always work. The driver's front is intermittent - only works below 55-60 degrees. I suppose it's toast.

While this may not be related at all to your problem, when the rear bumper work was done did they use an OEM bumper or an aftermarket part? I had front end damage to my 2015 sedan and fool that I was I did not have the dealer do the repairs, my front parking sensor has never worked properly since. The latest story from the dealer is that aftermarket bumpers do not have proper brackets to mount the sensor, this is after replacing the sensor twice on the aftermarket bumper. This is still an unresolved issue, but I think we are getting closer.

What’s funny is they were supposed to replace the bumper, but instead, they reused the current bumper and repainted it because I guess it wasn’t damaged?

I have also started having sensor issues recently on my 15, I believe its one of the front sensors that has a chip out of the inner circle but I can't be sure. Don't feel like shelling out 100+ for as new sensor that I barely use anyway. The annoying part is the sensors beeping at me with the dash warning every time I start the car. Does anyone know if you can get the parking sensors to stay off without having to press the button each time?

I think that you can get them painted off of ebay for a lot less than that.... I was going to grab one, but I'm lazy & don't feel like taking off the bumper cover. Even though it's pretty straightforward.

Nope. I haven't found a way to keep them off.
