I know you are fuming right now, but this part is not surprising. Dealership service depts typically don't do collision repairs or glass replacement. I've not come across one - of any brand - that doesn't farm that out to third party. Some larger multi-brand chains might have their own off-site collision center that all their dealerships would send their customers to. Even those collision centers might farm out windshield and body glass repair to 3rd party. Then I called the dealer and spoke with the service manager. He told me to take the car to a body shop! WTF! They can't/won't even fix their own car!
I've had Cobra and Yi dashcams, but have since switch to Rexing off Amazon. I've bought various models over the years, all with supercapacitors. That addresses one the biggest problem with my previous cams. Their build-in batteries would fail over time, and then wouldn't stay powered long enough after the ignition is shut off (and power is cut to the dashcams) for the video file to be closed out properly. Result is that file would become corrupt. Over time, these corrupt files would clog up the SD card and I'd have to remove it to clean them off. Anyhow, the latest one I got was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EX8ATKK Peruse through their offerings and see which one you might like better. I like the fact that these all mount solidly to the windshield, without the typical gimble swivel mount. I've had those and the plastic swivels would invariably fail. Plus the sunshade I use constantly knock them out of alignment.Good advice. I've thought about it. Any brand or model recommendations? There are so many out there..
I don't imagine anyone makes the glass for the sunroof, since it's low volume, but I could be wrong.
I may try duct tape to waterproof it, but I'm not sure it will last long, given all the buffeting from the wind. It has nothing to stick to except around the edges.
I have seen pictures on how some salvage yards ship them and they literally cut the roof off and send it like that lol.I thought of that this morning. Thanks for providing that info.
I asked the collision center about finding one from a recycler. He said they don't do that due to the labor involved to remove it and the risk of damage in the process.
I wouldn't care, if they could do it.
That is hardcore!
The salvage yard might not be responsible to extricate the sunroof out of that, but somebody still has to take that risk.
Used to be my preference not to have a sunroof car. Now... it's a definitely don't-want. Unfortunately, it is almost always packaged into the higher end trims. On some models, "no sunroof" is not even an option.![]()
