  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So my G70 sunroof exploded on the highway today. #&@!

Good advice. I've thought about it. Any brand or model recommendations? There are so many out there..

Then I called the dealer and spoke with the service manager. He told me to take the car to a body shop! WTF! They can't/won't even fix their own car!
I know you are fuming right now, but this part is not surprising. Dealership service depts typically don't do collision repairs or glass replacement. I've not come across one - of any brand - that doesn't farm that out to third party. Some larger multi-brand chains might have their own off-site collision center that all their dealerships would send their customers to. Even those collision centers might farm out windshield and body glass repair to 3rd party.

That is the path we took for the windshield replacement we did on the G70 a few months back. I called the local Genesis/Hyundai dealer service dept, pretty much knowing they don't do windshield replacement. They referred me to their collision center, which in turn gave me the business card of the 3rd party company that does all their glass work. The guy that owns the company turned out to be real nice and easy to work with. Made an appt 2days later for him to come to my house and do the job on site. Very professionally done, and I'm very satisfied with the work and quality of the glass.

This was after a fiasco with Safelite, which was whom Progressive referred me to when I called them to file an insurance claim. Made an appt for 2wks later because they claimed their distributor had no stock. Showed up for the appt, dropped the car off, only to get a call a couple of hrs later telling me to pick up the car unfixed. Tech claimed they could not get their ADAS calibration tool to talk to thru OBD2 port and tried to blame the JB4 connector he'd spotted under the dash (we had disconnected it before going there). What a waste of time with a bunch of f#$%^&@!

I've had Cobra and Yi dashcams, but have since switch to Rexing off Amazon. I've bought various models over the years, all with supercapacitors. That addresses one the biggest problem with my previous cams. Their build-in batteries would fail over time, and then wouldn't stay powered long enough after the ignition is shut off (and power is cut to the dashcams) for the video file to be closed out properly. Result is that file would become corrupt. Over time, these corrupt files would clog up the SD card and I'd have to remove it to clean them off. Anyhow, the latest one I got was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EX8ATKK Peruse through their offerings and see which one you might like better. I like the fact that these all mount solidly to the windshield, without the typical gimble swivel mount. I've had those and the plastic swivels would invariably fail. Plus the sunshade I use constantly knock them out of alignment.

BTW, which ever dashcam you end up buying, make sure you get High Endurance SD cards. They cost a bit more but will withstand the very high temp these dash cams will be subjected to (especially for the TX Summers here). Last one I got was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NY23WBG but other brands like Samsung also have high-endurance SD cards.

Thanks so much! That's just the kind of info I appreciate.

Yeah, any kind of issue that could be blamed on an impact, like glass shattering, even when a glaring defect, that's what you get, unfortunately. And same thing with defective wear items, blamed on your driving. That's why I now have $0 glass deductible, to at least not having to pay out of pocket if something like that happens to me. Both vehicles are almost all glass on the roof, and have expensive windshields due to cameras and HUD, so basically a necessity I'd say. Good luck.

Yeah, 0 deductible here too.
So I had a long and surprisingly candid conversation with my local Hyundai/Genesis service manager today. He was very nice and understanding of my frustration. He seemed frustrated as well with his inability to get Genesis parts in a timely manner or at all (vs Hyundai). His attitude seemed to be "they're great cars as long as they don't break". He also indicated that they struggle to provide their Genesis customers with the "premium experience" they expect.
I inquired about the lead time on my sunroof, so he called the parts manager. According to the parts manager, there isn't a single G70 sunroof anywhere in the US, and he didn't see any available from South Korea! 😲☹️ Who knows when this will get fixed?! I believe there are a couple of Hyundai employees on this forum. Feel free to chime in and correct me if I got bad info.
Until then, I got a replacement sunroof at Home Depot, haha. It's not weatherproof by any means, but it prevents the severe and highly annoying buffeting from the wind when driving over 30mph. I used 1" foam insulating board, in case it manages to fly off and hit another car. They didn't have any in black or dark green 😉PXL_20230322_204305020.webp

Wow! Just got my preliminary estimate from the collision place the dealer recommended (I may or may not be using them). Their price for the sunroof assembly is $3250! Then add another $1200 for misc parts and labor (and that's if they don't have to take out or replace the windshield - he wasn't sure about that). Glad to have insurance.

If they ever do find me a new sunroof, I really hope they don't have to remove the windshield to replace it. The service manager told me he has a Genesis customer right now waiting for a new windshield because the last THREE they received were all shattered! He said they aren't packed as well as the Hyundai ones. What the hell!
If they can't find me a sunroof, I'm in a position where I can't drive it (in the rain at least), I can't get it fixed and I can't sell or trade it without suffering significant financial loss. Not a good situation.

I'd put duct tape, not only to prevent wind noise, but in case it rains unexpectedly. And why in the world you cannot just replace the glass, rather than the entire moon-roof? Makes zero sense. Then no freaking parts for months. Geez. Hope mine never gives me trouble. Never open it anyway, so useless to me.

I don't imagine anyone makes the glass for the sunroof, since it's low volume, but I could be wrong.
I may try duct tape to waterproof it, but I'm not sure it will last long, given all the buffeting from the wind. It has nothing to stick to except around the edges.

Maybe getting this out on social media would give Genesis a reason to get you squared up.

Plexiglass?

Plenty of used ones on car-part. Or are you trying to get a brand new one?

I thought of that this morning. Thanks for providing that info.
I asked the collision center about finding one from a recycler. He said they don't do that due to the labor involved to remove it and the risk of damage in the process.
I wouldn't care, if they could do it.

I may try weatherproofing it with Gorilla tape, with some rags underneath to take up the space so it doesn't buffet in the wind too much.
I don't want to use anything that could pose a hazard to others if it flys off while driving.
This is definitely not turning into a Premium experience, haha.

I have seen pictures on how some salvage yards ship them and they literally cut the roof off and send it like that lol.

That is hardcore!

The salvage yard might not be responsible to extricate the sunroof out of that, but somebody still has to take that risk.

Used to be my preference not to have a sunroof car. Now... it's a definitely don't-want. Unfortunately, it is almost always packaged into the higher end trims. On some models, "no sunroof" is not even an option. :(

And sadly I really enjoy having a sunroof. I've got one in all my cars, and usually open, it least partway, when temps are between 50 and 80. I may have to rethink having one in the future, although as you said, it's often standard.

I think most people prefer a sunroof but really, this is super unusual for a G70 to have a sunroof explode. If we were trying really hard to avoid issues and minimize risk with a car, this class is probably not the one to purchase. Things we are far more likely to have issues with are the electronic suspension, turbo's, AWD transfer case, 8 speed transmission, HUD, and array of sensors and features.

Maybe, we'll see. Hyundai is leading in sunroof failures, although still a low percentage overall I'm sure. It's the lack of new parts that really makes this a difficult problem.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
One large roll of extra-wide Gorilla tape later (and my wife's cut finger 😰) it's hopefully now weatherproof. I filled the space with folded micro fiber towels and a layer of cardboard. Should help reduce the wind noise too.
At this point, any concerns of tape residue sticking to the paint at the rear of the roof are low on my list of care-abouts, haha.
