Do you mind sharing the quote for the replacement? The glass place called to say they have the glass. It's getting replaced next week, so that was quick. Hopefully it will go smoothly.
HOLY SHIT MAN!Sure, I will when I get it. I'm guessing it will be around $1k. The preliminary estimate I got from the collision shop to replace the entire sunroof assembly was about $4500!
I find this very hard to believe, since their own OEM parts catalog lists a part number that can be ordered separately:I know, crazy!
Ironically I just got an email from my Genesis case manager, one week after asking her if she/Genesis could help me locate a sunroof assembly (this was before I learned that just the glass could be relatively easily replaced).
She said they have placed an order for one (haha) and will let me know when they have an ETA. A week late and a dollar short.
I emailed her that I learned (on my own) that the glass could simply be replaced, and was in fact already at the glass company.
I'm still surprised that Genesis and the dealer seemed unaware that this was an available option. Since it was a spontaneous failure, rather than an accident or impact from a foreign object, I have no reason to believe that there's anything wrong with the sunroof mechanism (not including the rattling and crackling reported by many, haha).
I'll let you know how this goes.
The same exact thing happened to my 2020 G70. I was driving on a residential road at about 25 mph and it just shattered. I didn’t know what happened. Car ended up staying in the shop for about a month and a half. Had to go through insuranceThanks, it was a new experience for me, that's for sure. I haven't had a chance to research if Genesis will cover this. Hope so. And the loaner while it's in the shop.
I guess that would make them fans of sunroofsWell there was broken glass they couldn't get to, so now they have to drop the headliner. The car will be in the shop at least another day. Hoping that does it.
The manager told me "we do a lot of Genesis vehicles".He said they replace about 600 broken sunroofs (of ALL brands) a year. Wow.
Of all the features on the car, if I had to give up one, the big glass roof would be first. Both my 2015 and 2018, they were opened one time, the day I bought the car.Well there was broken glass they couldn't get to, so now they have to drop the headliner. I don't think so. It literally has to slide an inch or two only. And even if it was something there, it'd just get pushed back IMO. It'll be fineI'm worried that if there are glass chunks lodged in the mechanism/tracks, they won't be able to open it enough to get to the bolts.![]()
I'm glad they were able to fix it for you. What a pain!!Got my car back today, good as new, thanks to the pros at the glass company (and no thanks to Genesis). They had to drop the headliner to access lots of broken glass that was trapped in the sunroof assembly and above the headliner. I was worried about damage or dirty finger prints on the off-white interior, but they did a superb job, and everything works as it should and looks like it's never been touched. They had to fight with the insurance company of course, to get them to pay for the extra labor to do that. The insurance company wanted to give them $180 for the whole job
The total labor charge ended up being $930 (0 for me).
The owner of the glass company said they do mostly Subarus (very popular here in NE) and Kia's. Hmmm.
