  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So my G70 sunroof exploded on the highway today. #&@!

Test drove an S5 Sportback today. Very, very nice, but of course pricey. I'm going to try out an i4 soon also (and pretend I can't see the buck-tooth grille 😉).

The glass place called to say they have the glass. It's getting replaced next week, so that was quick. Hopefully it will go smoothly.

Do you mind sharing the quote for the replacement?

Sure, I will when I get it. I'm guessing it will be around $1k. The preliminary estimate I got from the collision shop to replace the entire sunroof assembly was about $4500!

HOLY SHIT MAN!

I know, crazy!
Ironically I just got an email from my Genesis case manager, one week after asking her if she/Genesis could help me locate a sunroof assembly (this was before I learned that just the glass could be relatively easily replaced).
She said they have placed an order for one (haha) and will let me know when they have an ETA. A week late and a dollar short.
I emailed her that I learned (on my own) that the glass could simply be replaced, and was in fact already at the glass company.
I'm still surprised that Genesis and the dealer seemed unaware that this was an available option. Since it was a spontaneous failure, rather than an accident or impact from a foreign object, I have no reason to believe that there's anything wrong with the sunroof mechanism (not including the rattling and crackling reported by many, haha).
I'll let you know how this goes.

I find this very hard to believe, since their own OEM parts catalog lists a part number that can be ordered separately:

This vendor sells it for $338.70. Even without discount is only $437.03. Granted, whether their US or Canadian warehouses have them on the shelf is another matter. Still... if the part is available separately, how on earth do they not know it's replaceable?

Thanks, it was a new experience for me, that's for sure. I haven't had a chance to research if Genesis will cover this. Hope so. And the loaner while it's in the shop.
The same exact thing happened to my 2020 G70. I was driving on a residential road at about 25 mph and it just shattered. I didn’t know what happened. Car ended up staying in the shop for about a month and a half. Had to go through insurance

Wow, interesting to hear. That sucks, especially being in the shop that long. Did you file a report with the NHTSA? If enough people do, they're likely to look into it.
Did they replace just the glass or the entire sunroof assembly? I'm guessing the latter. Why was it in the shop that long? How did it turn out? I'm curious to learn more details of your experience.

Supposed to be getting the glass replaced tomorrow AM, if it's not raining. I'll let you know how this goes. 🤞🤞🤞
I'm worried that if there are glass chunks lodged in the mechanism/tracks, they won't be able to open it enough to get to the bolts. 😬

Well there was broken glass they couldn't get to, so now they have to drop the headliner 😬☹️. The car will be in the shop at least another day. Hoping that does it.
The manager told me "we do a lot of Genesis vehicles". 😒 He said they replace about 600 broken sunroofs (of ALL brands) a year. Wow.

I guess that would make them fans of sunroofs😂. Hopefully their experience helps while replacing yours.

Of all the features on the car, if I had to give up one, the big glass roof would be first. Both my 2015 and 2018, they were opened one time, the day I bought the car.
Given the breakage, squeeks and rattles, i'd think they would at least make it a bit smaller.

I now appreciate my cars that have "sunroofs" with no glass, but rather a sliding steel, body colored, panel. Never had an issue with them.

I don't think so. It literally has to slide an inch or two only. And even if it was something there, it'd just get pushed back IMO. It'll be fine:).

Got my car back today, good as new, thanks to the pros at the glass company (and no thanks to Genesis). They had to drop the headliner to access lots of broken glass that was trapped in the sunroof assembly and above the headliner. I was worried about damage or dirty finger prints on the off-white interior, but they did a superb job, and everything works as it should and looks like it's never been touched. They had to fight with the insurance company of course, to get them to pay for the extra labor to do that 🙄. The insurance company wanted to give them $180 for the whole job 😂 The total labor charge ended up being $930 (0 for me).
The owner of the glass company said they do mostly Subarus (very popular here in NE) and Kia's. Hmmm.

I'm glad they were able to fix it for you. What a pain!!

Great ending to an unfortunate saga. Would've been better if Genesis had owned up to it. Oh well.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few reports of same thing happened to Stingers. The 19's with low profile tires don't help. Some folks go 20's. There were even a few that stuffed 21's under wide body kits. Nuts.

Yeah, the owner asked me if I had hit a pothole (I hadn't). He said it was pretty unusual for them to just explode like that.
Thanks for the support peeps. 🙂

I got an email from Genesis with a survey asking how they did 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I let them know.
