  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Split dashboard

Looks like a cut with a box cutter. Hard to believe heat would produce a straight line cut such as these depicted. Probably a lot of fixes, but I doubt the colors would even come close to matching. Wondering about the airbags beneath the cut. When the air bags blow, do they blow the dashboard panels off?

This tread was started on '15. Wondering if the OP is still around to tell us what the result of the fix was.

This is the problem with OLD threads. Perhaps one threads should be locked.
Thanks man I didn’t post any pics my “slice” is only about 1.5 inch. Just concerned with it spreading and not performing correctly in the unfortunate case that it needs to.

I have a 2009 3.8 sedan with the same cracks on the passenger side dash. I suspect it may have been an airbag deployment issue but really have no idea. 175k on her.

you had anyone check it for safety?

Have you had any luck as I am having the same issue. I feel that it is a safety issue and contacted the NHTSA.
I also have a 2011 Genesis Garage kept ( away from the sun, live in Fla) and I noticed a few months ago that the dash board has a hair line cracked on the drivers side air bag .The car has 80K miles on it but I agree on a manufacture defect , not sure how much it cost to replace a dash board

I have a 2009 Genesis with 33358 miles. I bought the zero deductible extended warranty from Hyundai. The passenger side dashboard split above the air bag. Hyundai will not fix the problem under the extended warranty. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Yes my 2010 is doing the same and I’m scared to death that it may just blow while someone is sitting in the passages seat

I am fighting them right now 2/14/2023. I think it is unsafe as it is around the airbag. Hyundai is being evasive and will not give me an answer if it is safe for the passenger Incase the airbag is deployed....

If extreme heat is an issue in your area I would suggest a windshield sunshade as it will protect the dash from sun exposure. My car is a 2010 with 65k miles and I don't have any issues with the dash but since I live in the Bay Area it probably doesn't get as hot as it does in your part of Florida.
Wait till you have 10 years it will aplit

I have a 2012 5.0 non r-spec and the dash is horrible. My 2013 3.8 had the cracks above the passenger airbag, but the 2012 I recently traded for has cracks all over the dash (I almost turned the car down because of the dash). I do have a replacement instrument panel that I am just trying to get the courage up to install myself. Local shop wouldn't install my replacement part and quoted me $2850 for a replacement panel and installation.

I just want to confirm, did you buy an official warranty from Hyundai or did a Hyundai dealer sell you a 3rd party extended warranty? If its a legitimate Hyundai warranty, does it cover interior panels? I believe they list covered items in your documentation. I'm curious as to why it spit as the dash material is soft touch plastics and isn't nearly as brittle as traditional hard plastic dashes. Did the car have a lot of sun exposure in that one spot?
I have 2009 as well and I bought the car with 100,000 from Florida and the whole dash was cracked.

14 years of sitting in Florida sun does wonders for things like that. You got me curious now, on a 100 degree day I'll park outside and check the temperature after an hour.

Yeah, I had to get a cover for the dash, however the rest of the interior is fine

How is this unsafe? It's the dash that is splitting, not the airbag. The dash is supposed to split when the airbag goes off, so you already know that it will work correctly.
Yes, it is a cosmetic problem. No, it is not a safety problem.

That’s true, definitely not a safety issue.

The force at which the bag deploys is calculated based on an unfractured dash. As the dash is cracked from both sides of the airbag the integrity of the dash is compromised, the force will be excessive and there is a tendency of that piece totally detaching and hitting the passenger. There is a reason that Hyundai will not answer my question if it is safe. When I pushed they for angry and said they will never answer this question. Now if it was safe why would Hyundai hesitate answering this question.

Hyundai M.C. extended my airbag warranty until 2025. Guessing the issue with Takata? Cracked dash pieces during an airbag deployment equals plastic shrapnel in my mind. Mine is a 2014 and is garage kept and sometimes during work I keep it in the hangar on super hot days.

The force is hardly any different with or without a dash cover in place, but suit yourself. BTW, the airbag does not hit you, you hit the airbag.
Good luck convincing anyone that this is safety related and that they should pay for it. Perhaps you will succeed.

Not actualy seeing the crack and measuring and calculating, much of what you say is supposition. Maybe doing some testing too.

I belive a portion of the dash is supposed to crack at deployment so that may or may not affect the piece you say will be loose. I don't think any of us, including Hyundai, can say for sure.

I know what I'd do (nothing) but that is up to the owner, not me.
