  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Random question, but how do I disable the backup camera?

Don’t ask why, but I’m wondering. Have the standard 8 inch head unit. I see three options to do this.

1: in the engineering menu I found an option to turn it off but I’m afraid using this will mess up the software.
2: I could pull the fuse for the camera but in this case I’m afraid that if I want to turn it back on it will have to be reprogrammed or something
3: I could put a piece of tape over the camera

Thoughts?

#3 Easily reversed too. Won't ask why, but could not live withut it these days.

I would just wait. The wire to the backup camera will break soon enough.

How expensive is that to fix once it happens? Isn’t it the trunk wiring harness or something that’s a common failure on these cars

Yes, it is a common failure. In my case the dealer ran a separate signal wire from the trunk to the head unit. A couple of years later, something else failed and I've not had a functioning camera for about 6 months. It could be the ground or it could be a connector at the camera?
As far as expense, I don't know. Probably at least a few hundred dollars.

Other people have been able to do the TSB themselves and find the breaks in the wires where the harness bends. I have not been able to find the break so far. Additionally, the trunk switch wires will often fail as well; I haven't been able to fix that either.

fixed that for you
Thousands to replace the harness, but only a few hundred to repair the existing harness as is recommended. You can do it yourself for tens of dollars in parts.

Okay. Will it help prolong the life of the harness if I refrain from opening and closing the trunk and opening and closing the trunk as little as possible?

Just as much (not all) of the car will last longer if you refrain from driving it more than once a week.
Did you buy it to use it or to keep it?
