  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

High folks,

I've just put down a deposit for a used 2013 Genny Sedan with ...25k miles on it ... Yes, incredible. Everything checks out well, except for the steering, which is extremely hard, compared to my 2012 Genny Sedan - the exact same car, same trim (premium), just one year older. The old Genny was a total loss as a result of an accident.

I've got a couple of questions that hopefully the Genny aficionados her can help with:
1) Has there been any significant change been made to the 2013 steering wheel ease of turning? Is it much different than that for the previous year?? Highly unlikely, but just making sure.
2) I thought that the 2012 had a fully electric steering mechanism, as opposed to for e.g. My Dodge Charger, where the steering would get really tough in winter, due to the cold weather around here.

If steering fluid is involved in the 2013 model, maybe the issue is an old, gunky fluid, in case that it has not been flushed and replaced.

3) How worried should I be about this? Is there any potential big issue here that would make my buy a horrible one? Other than this, the car is as good as new...

Thanks

Your hydraulic steering system likely needs service, or a part. Simple stuff to be expected on a car that was built in 2012.

My recollection is that the base and Premium Package models have hydraulic steering, whereas the Tech Package and R-Spec have electric steering.

I have an extended warranty on my ‘12 that cost me $1,300. It expires in August ‘24. It has almost paid for itself with two repairs. A steering problem like yours would have been covered.

Ask the folks at Advance Auto about your problem, or just take the car to your Hyundai dealer and get it fixed.

Thank you. That's my assumption as well.
Hopefully they'll fix it before they release it to me.

Maybe yes, maybe no.

By the way, your Navigation may not be easily updatable. Have you investigated that?

Yes, I know that from my 2012. I'd have to get a dealership to do it, for a charge. Not worth it.
I'll use directions over Bluetooth from my cell's Google maps. Surely far from what I've got used to while renting a car now - Android auto, but it is what it is. I assume that if have to change the entire system to get Android auto, especially due to the tying in the AC controls.

Good that you know.

You’re still getting many great features in that ‘13 3.8 Premium package. It has a wonderful audio system, a comfortable ride, beautiful appearance, inside and out.

My Son owns our ‘12 Genesis now and loves the comfort and the performance. He also loves not having any monthly car payments.

Now that we are almost into 2024, though, I know I’d miss the modern tech and improved safety features that I have even in my ‘22 Tucson.

Good luck with your ‘13, but keep in mind that even with its low mileage, expensive problems may lay ahead and you are without warranty coverage. Things can go belly up quickly with an 11 year-old car.

I would make that a requirement, after all - it's a major component of the car, and it's broken.

That's my stance. We'll see how it goes. They can always argue that that year's steering is less smooth than for the 2012, or that the car was not broken in fully, as opposed to my 156k kms 2012 Genny, etc. Fingers crossed. Waiting for them to do the work first. Cheers.
