The downside to buying the "premium" late model stock car systems is that they are very hard to update to newer technology or features.

On most older(pre-2010) premium audio systems, you could just swap in an aftermarket head unit with newer features and maybe use an aftermarket interface module to connect to the CANBUS system and stock amplifiers. Now, the premuim head-units are built-in to the dash with large fixed screens and the software features are next to impossible to change unless you can find an company that makes interface modules that tap into the audio control module. Unfortunately, not many(if at all) aftermarket companies make any interface units for the 2015 Genesis premium audio system.

Over the last decade; it seems that you are stuck with whatever premium audio system features and tech that you receive in your car and the automaker's ability(or desire) to keep it updated. Especially with the 2015 Genesis premium audio system.

My company car was an '83 Old Cutlas. At end of lease, I bought it at a very good price. One of our customers was Sparkomatic so I was able to upgrade to AM/FM cheaply. Cars seem to be a bit more complex these days though.

True. Soon it will be impossible to just swap out a factory head unit and upgrade to a modern aftermarket radio on any car regardless if the system is premium or not.

Owners will have no choice but to find a company that makes audio module interface units with updated features to upgrade the current 2023 and newer integrated radios if the automakers do not provide any upgrades that are installed even in the low cost base model cars now.

So just a quick update on turn-by-turn navigation - it will never work for the AU/NZ Genesis models of our generation.

I pulled apart the map binary for the US and compared it to the AU one and they're completely different. The US one contains code that sends the turn-by-turn information over CAN to the HUD. The AU map binary does not. That's basically it. Even though our HUD can display the turn-by-turn info (by kicking it into service mode with GDS), it never receives anything from the maps program to display turns. And it's basically impossible (very very very difficult) to patch it in without trying to break both the program (patching in stuff is hard) and whatever verification checks they do.

Same with Apple Carplay / Android Auto. I think Suburbazine was testing the AA/AC firmware from the newer (2018+) model but couldn't get any sound to work. That same software wouldn't even boot on my AU model. I think something went wrong when they brought the car here as the code is littered with comments like `// For AU model, need to disable boot` with code missing or removed to get it to run here. No idea why.

Shame. Took it for a service at the Hyundai Stealership as they said they were going to update the headunit as well but never did. Apparently they don't know how

No doubt - Was researching an upgrade to a potential car that I'm thinking about buying and the site clearly stated "no products available, must retain stock head unit"... The only thing that I could find was speaker upgrades and you have to alter the impedance of many of them to match the stock amp(s). You have to buy another part to bypass the stock amp, if you want an amp upgrade.... OEMs have made it deliberately difficult.

So the OS system is based off Linux not Windows.

I read that you could swap in a newer factory HU and matching factory amp for a 2017(or newer) Ultimate G80 model to upgrade to Car-play/AA. I looked into it, but I did not want to spend over $1000 to make it happen.

If I can find a used 2017 model 17 speaker HU/amplifier set for about $400 I may give it a shot.

I have a 2015 nz new Genesis 3.8 as far as I know I can’t update the software in it, I’d love to add apple car play but can’t now load this from myhyundai because I’m in New Zealand and it does not recognise my VIN. I have seen several videos showing it can be done but these are all in the states. My models is not the ultimate but does have HUD and the almost double glazed
front windows ….. can the software be updated??

I have 2015 Genesis 3.8 with 8” screen. I was wondering the same thing and I found out how to do it. So the software update is pretty big so the standard SD card that is in the Genesis won’t have enough space to do the update. I purchased a 32GB SD card and downloaded and installed the update on it. After I insert it in the car I had the latest version of the software which included Apple CarPlay that I originally wanted. Hope this helps.

Yeah I've just had a bit of a "mans look" at the upgrade files. Downloaded both the Aus 2021 G80; just for the Map and reference Files, and the US 2015 G80 9.2inch update. Of course the file system layouts are totally different for each version. But I can replace the map files easily enough they default to a directory /Data/Nation/NA for North America and /Data/Nation/AUS for Aus. The problem is deciphering the Address Search and POI database There are also some other compressed images but they are encrypted!!!!. So more time needed. Funnily enough I found the config file where you change "Gas Stations" to "Petrol Stations".
Will do some more playing.

What I did notice with interest is that my original 2020 Update SD Card (The one they gave me for my last free service Upgrade) has NZ Map files included. So I think NZ and Aus are the same in the old 9.2 Navi Setup. If you want @Kiwiger I can shoot you a copy of it. It's a November 2020 Update so only 18months old.

Its only an UPDATE SDCard. It's not the full software Smity. So if you don't have a working Nav it's not going to help you.

Actually, the SD card (on systems that have an SD card slot) also contains the actual maps. So, no loaded SD card = no navigation.

Well tried to update maps and no luck, tried it on sd card downloaded from Genisis updates but when I swapped cards to update it the car did not recognise the card say something like “no working navigation” I then tried it on a flash drive and it only recognised the sounds but not the actual file so played a series of mp3 pings ….. so I give up and stuck with 2021 NZ maps unless an expert on here has better ideas

I always swap the cards while the car is off. When I start it, it then offers to update as it is booting.

I think the max is 16GB. I always used the old card. I have no idea why bigger would not work but I did read that some time back.

32G is the correct size for the update. Did you let the updater software format the card and load the files, or did you copy them over manually? The card must be formatted as FAT32, and the files must be loaded in the specific directory structure that the PC program creates.
