3.3T Jerky auto transmission (hard downshifts while braking)

Hi guys (maybe gals too).

Kia Stinger 3.3T MY19 driver here.

This thread was helpful for me, so thought I would chime in to assist other future readers.

My ride did this behaviour also (i.e. harsher and noticeable downshift, mostly from 3>2 when coasting to or soft breaking to slow or stop, particularly when cold). I reported this at 38000km, dealer reset = all ok until about 42500km then dealer denied me (wtf!) so I asked them "nicely" to just do the reset again = all good again .... smooth shifts all round.

So I found myself looking for a cost effective method to do this myself. I had a couple of very basic OBD2 readers/resetters so knew a little bit about these devices. Did a bit more digging, found this thread then came to have found this little device --- THINKDIAG --- which has the feature allowing you to do the adaptive transmission values reset for a Kia Stinger (as described a few comments above). They (mythinkcar support) actually recommended me there Thinkdiag 2 (a newer version) but I had found that the Thinkdiag (version 1) did it for me .... at cost less the $100 too !!! It is very inexpensive device and might be worth a shot for you G drivers too.

It is a hell annoying kia/hyundai/genesis transmission "feature" they gave us ... so if you can do this reset yourself then you'll save some time and frustrations, to just get on with some "smoother" driving.

All the best.
Do you (or anyone here) know if this would work for the 2022 G70? I have around 25,000 miles on mine and I've never really asked the dealership to do a reset, would love to try this though.

Looking at their website I don't see Genesis as one of the supported vehicles, but I do see the Stinger is supported for all year models, would it be safe to assume this would work on the 2022 Genesis?

They do have a 30 day return policy but it looks like it only covers new/unopened items.

It should work but I can't confirm.

I noticed you can buy it on amazon.com as well so maybe give that a shot. It'll be much easier to return.

That's a great call! I just purchased it on Amazon, I will let you guys know if this will work with the 2022 G70 😄

The one I ended up buying was the Thinkdiag 2, while it's not clear enough on their website it looks like for this one you get one free year to use then you have to pay for a membership (according to some reviews).

As far as I understood, you get the free 1 year for the thinkdiag 1 too. Comparing both there really wasn't any benefit to getting the new one for our cars.

To be clear, this is the one I purchased:

Limited-time deal: Thinkdiag OBD2 Scanner Bluetooth, All System Bidirectional scan Tool OE Level Diagnostic Tools with ECU Coding,15+ Service Functions All Software 1 Year Free fits for iPhone & Android https://a.co/d/caOLJW5

Thanks for the clarification, I changed my order to thinkdiag 1.

Question, were you able to successfully do the reset with the thinkdiag 1? The product description says it costs 50 dollars or something per reset request...
Yes - Thinkdiag 1 had this feature for me and allowed me to reset. However I could not use app on my new phone, as version I bought was only compatible up to android 12, so pulled out a spare phone I had about.

I am in Brisbane Australia and would be happy to try it out for a local G70 driver willing ... pm me

I think the 1 year only applies to accessing the "service function". The adaptive values reset is found under advanced diagnostics>transmission(tcu)>special function menu so may not be affected by this paid subscription limitation ... I hope. Either way it is still cheap as.

Update on this, did some more browsing and came across this:

It's a uni-directional scanner but claims to do the reset function. Ordered and will give it a shot.

I had to order the thinkdiag from amazon.com (I'm in Canada) and it won't arrive for at least 2 weeks.

This one is almost half the price so if it works...great.

I assumed the same with another device. However the adaptive values is not a "reset function" (or service function). For the Kia Stinger is was under advanced diagnostics as "special" function for the TCU. Good luck though, let us know.

So I have an update for the Thinkdiag 1, I have received mine yesterday, it took me quite some time to get the app set up and ready to go, first of all the app itself seems pretty buggy and not very well designed, but that's not a huge deal as I was mainly trying to use it to reset the adaptives.

Well, the first thing I have noticed is that when it asked me to choose my vehicle, I was able to find the Kia stinger (I have the 2022 Genesis G70), and while they listed on their website that the Stinger was supported for even up the 2023 model, the options on the app itself only went up to the 2019 model, so I selected that just to try.

Either way, the app then prompted me to scan my VIN, and it seemed to be able to find my vehicle model and year and everything, and it even confirmed the engine type and all that, and it didn't really mention anything about this vehicle being unsupported so I was excited.

There were multiple options for doing diagnostics and resetting things, I was able to do a scan for fault codes and or successfully scanned my car and didn't find any fault codes which makes sense, it showed the list of fault codes and for the ones that my car didn't support it would say "unsupported" but for the most part it went through most of them.

Now for resetting the adaptives, I had to install other internal tools within the app, it's quite buggy because I have tried multiple times to install these tools and they would usually fail to install or fall at "unzipping", I finally got them to install and found the one that POSSIBLY can reset the adaptives, I think it's the ones called ETS:
IMG_4313.jpeg

For each one of these tools there are further restrictions for which vehicles they support, I initially thought it was gonna be under the "Box" tool which shows a gear icon, but that one only showed few car makes to choose from and Kia or Hyundai was not listed. So I went into the ETS tool which can do some throttle resetting, inside there i found Kia however it only showed the 2018 model and that's it, I still selected that in the hopes that it might do something.

After going through several options I found the option to reset the adaptives, during this process it was able to connect to my car and after a few seconds it just told me that the operation is completed, I was really kind of excited and decided to drive the car to see if anything changed, well... I don't think anything changed lol the transmission shifting was still having the same issue with the hard downshifts while braking/coming to a stop.

I have tried to do the same process again just to be sure, and every time it would say it was successful, but nothing really changed, keep it mind that at this point I was still choosing the 2018 Stinger as the model because that was literally the only one listed, so it would make sense that it wouldn't work for the 2022 G70, but I was hoping maybe there's a chance it might be able to do that.

I was hoping to see if there was a way to check on the adaptive values, I don't know if at the dealership they can see logs of these values and whether they were reset or not etc. But I couldn't find any other way in that app to check on that too confirm whether the adaptives were reset, the only thing to confirm that was the message that showed "successful" after you try to reset the adaptives, but that's pretty much it, it doesn't really show any historical logs or reports that I can check, it does have reports for other things but that's not what I was looking for.

Anyway, I'm gonna mess with it again today and see if I can find anything useful, but most likely I'm going to return this.

Did you try this?

The adaptive values reset is found under advanced diagnostics>transmission(tcu)>special function menu

This seems accurate as its the same submenu in the more expensive $500+ scanners.

Also see if you can update the software so that it has information for newer models.

So I spent some time yesterday trying that again, I am using this app on my iphone, every time I would select the system i.e transmission(tcu), it would try to connect for a few seconds then the app will suddenly force close. This happens regadly of what system I try to choose, after investigating the issue, I noticed many users facing problems specifically with the iPhone app, and they would say that the customer support would basically tell them it's better to use this app on Android device.

I happened to have an older Android phone and decided to try the same process on that one, surprisingly the app felt much smoother there and more responsive, and I was actually able to access that whole menu to select the system then the subsystem.

I have tried two things: first I tried going into Engine (ECM) > Special function > Resetting all adaptive values. This seemed to finish with a successful message, and btw I have noticed that the 2022 Genesis G70 is actually showing up there as a supported vehicle, the weird thing is that it showed up under Hyundai>G(70), so it seems that they didn't categorize it as Genesis>G70, but all is fine, the device got my VIN number and got all of my vehicle information correctly.

Anyway, so I reset all the adaptive values and got a successful message, so I decided to give it a test drive, I honestly didn't notice a difference at all, still had the same issue with the hard downshifting at that same gear when coming to a stop, I did start logging some data streams from the engine and transmission to see if I could find anything about those adaptive values, there were many fields that had adaptive values but I really was not sure if those were the same ones I was trying to reset or not, plus they were mostly measured in Volts, I'll spend some more time digging into that.

The next thing that I've tried was going into TCM (Transmission Control Module) > special function > Resetting Auto T/A Values.

This one unfortunately failed, I have tried it multiple times with the Ignition ON and the Engine OFF, I'm guessing that's the one that's supposed to reset the adaptive values for the transmission correct? Not the one under Engine (ECM) > Special function > Resetting all adaptive values.

I will try messing with this again today, hopefully go somewhere. Thanks for your help with this!

So yes, that's it.

Special function > reset adaptive values is what you want.

You can do it for both the ECU and the TCU.

It seems like the ECU one was successful but not the TCU.

I hope you find a solution but I'm fairly confident if it didn't work then it's because you have a newer g70 which apparently has a different TCU.

Keep us posted though!

The cheaper tool I got doesn't even have the special function option, so going to have to wait for the thinkdiag 1.

Hi guys (maybe gals too).

Kia Stinger 3.3T MY19 driver here.

This thread was helpful for me, so thought I would chime in to assist other future readers.

Scanner came in today, but running into the same issue as Mikey.

It autodetects, I go into TCU>special function and can choose to reset the adaptive values. Ignition on, engine off, but it keeps saying test failed when I initiate it.

Any thoughts? Did you use the Hyundai g70 profile or the kia stinger? Did you select 16 pin or 12 pin?

Hi Guys.

Sorry you're having no success here. Perhaps your model year Genesis is not properly supported by this Thinkdiag device.

Mine is a 2019 Kia Stinger and was listed as fully supported. The TCU adaptive values reset function seemingly working ok for me. To note, it was previously failing to auto diagnostic on my Samsung S22 (Android 13) so I reverted to Samsung S9 (Android 10) to get the app to run properly. I am not normally a fan of bluetooth connected devices (adds another layer of complexity) but this was cheap and worked.

Maybe the more expensive bi-directional devices will have more up to date software for your solution ... so I truly hope you find a cost effective solution.

I have a 2019 G70, and the Thinkdiag 1. Never succeeded in having the ThinkDiag detect my G70 properly, and none of the manual select options were able to reset the TCU adaptive values. After a LOT of back and forth with ThinkCar tech support, no resolution was available. I let my subscription expire, would NOT recommend any ThinkCar product at this time for Genesis owners (the web page promises support that isn't there, and the tech support was incompetent), and am open to a recommendation for a scanner that does work as advertised.

For the record, my 2019 G70 Design Edition had a really early build date (August 2018), so there might be something weird with my ECU and TCU that trips up the ThinkDiag.

Glad there's someone else. Pretty frustrating though.

Mine autodetects but just fails when I run the adaptive reset. Tried it by manually selecting every year g70/stinger and same thing.

Odd thing is once or twice I got a "completed" message as opposed to failed, however I didn't notice any improvement in the shift. Plus, it would complete the reset instantly, and I know from using the more expensive tools that the rest usually takes a few seconds.

I might play around with it a bit more but most likely the scanner is going back. Congrats to app master who was successful.

Hoping you didn't return it yet.

Decided to play around with the app a bit more today. Noticed there was an update for the Kia diagnostics.

Updated it, manually selected a 2020 Kia Stinger (my year g70) and reset the adaptives. It was successful. Was able to do it multiple times with no faults.

Switched back to the autodetected Hyundai g70 profile, and it failed.

Generally, the kia stinger profile worked for a variety of the special functions, where the Hyundai g70 profile would fail. Another one was calibrating the HUD, which I've been meaning to do since getting my windshield replaced. It would fail with the Hyundai g70 profile, but worked flawlessly with the stinger.

I haven't taken the car for a spin yet but will do so in a bit.
