how to fix panoramic sunroof creaking

I feel your pain ALB, my other half has a Camry with a huge sunroof like ours and no noise, even over uneven payment. I get the "You should have gotten something else" look every time she hears creaking.

Had same problem.
After six visits to the dealer and adding some insulation to the roof as well as tightening many bolts or screws, they gave up and now ordered a full roof to replace the glass original. They say the pops and creaks are coming from there.
They will call me when the parts arrive. Crossing my fingers.
Sick and tired of cracking noises whenever I got in or out of my driveway (uneven surfaces) and the wife bitching that I have got a lemon.
Praying.
Watch the repair carefully. For full replacement they pretty much remove your entire interior and possibly the front glass to get the headliner out of the way. Some have said they leave headliner in the vehicle but not sure how all that works and leave room to unbolt the entire sunroof while headliner is still inside. Worth looking carefully at the repair regardless that dealer did not screw something up.

My 2019 G80 was at the dealership on July 4th weekend with our complaints about cracking and creaking noise not to mention a loud rattle like a loose nut or bolt. The dealer's fix was to grease the rails. We still hear the creaking noise and will most likely bring it back but the wait for an appointment is months before they can see the car. this will give us a chance to fully road-test the "Grease Fix"
My problem seemed to be getting worse with no resolution. I followed the TSB as closely as possible and it seemed to improve quite a bit. Basically, clean all surfaces, silicone oil on every perimeter seal, grease on the rails. My issue seems to be coming from a loose support on the rear right side- there's quite a bit of play if you lift up and press down. The driver's side seems to have less play (and the sound seems to be coming from the passenger side). I think the key here was greasing the lower "pin" or nub the goes in the track- I imagine that either reduced the space enough to minimize the sound, or at least it gummed it up enough to make it quiet.

It's honestly getting me to the point of looking to trade the car in....the only resolution seems to be complete replacement at huge expense and that's not a guarantee. I'm about ready to superglue it and never open it again, provided I can drive without constant thunking. The creaking is an easy but temporary remedy, the thunking I couldn't get rid of. I believe my car is out of warranty at this point so I'm SOL aside from home remedies. Next step is the airbag rattle.

Has Genesis fixed its Panorama Roof problems? Seems there is an awful lot of problems here... this will determine whether I buy one or not....

I have had a 2021 G80 and now a 2022 G80 and have yet to encounter any issues with the roof, but the only time I open the roof is probably every six months to keep the working parts self lubricated, I do the same with my windows, but I do sometimes open the roofs shade.
I test drove a new 2022 G80 that the roof had been damaged in transport. After the roof was replaced, I test drove the car and going over the slightest bumps the roof rattled like crazy which I suspected it would do.
Panoramic roof have been problematic across the board and IMO manufacturers should stop installing them and probably return to the standard moon roof.
The only thing I will say is that IMO the G80 is a nice car. To take a chance with the Panoramic roof is your decision as to whether or not you want to take the risk and that goes for any brand you might consider that has a Panoramic roof.

🍀

I, finally, (they) solved it.

After 7 visits without solving it, and I pestering them, the GOOD GUYS at Lafayette LA decided to change the whole roof.

It worked !!!

Our sun roofs are a mystery at best. Some have the issue and some do not. Some have had the entire sun roof assy replaced and the issue was fixed, then it came back. Not sure the real root cause is actually known? Is it the sun roof, or the installation process, or the adhesive used for supports attached to the roof that hold drain tubes or wiring, not sure we really know? Would really like to see the headliner removed and detailed pictures of attach points and everything hidden by the headliner. A systematic engineering approach basically. Dealers are in a hurry to R & R things. Can’t believe HMC does not have some root cause Engineering type folks to figure out if it’s the vendor who makes the sun roof or installation related? A lot of aggravation and money has been spent on the damn sun roofs.

The dealer tries to "Relube" or adjust the roof as they did with my G80 2019, but replacement will never be their first response unless it is cracked and dangerous. My vehicle was re-lubed and never documented in the return invoice at no charge when my car was in for creaking and cracking sounds coming from the roof. After three months I still have a creaking and cracking noise so this was not a real fix. This will require me to make many trips to the dealer complaining about roof creaking and rattling noises until they determine the real issue -
A footnote: When I leased the car in 2019, the service manager told me the Panoramic roof was too heavy for the car and will ultimately need to be replaced as the weight and roof rails were not good enough to support the heavy glass roof. It makes sense as this noise is not a loose part but the roof supports complaining about the weight in my view.

🍀Somebody, ( sorry I do not recall name because I had that post in another computer) suggested squeezing some insulation material between the rails and that fixed his problem. I will send that post when I find it. In the mean time, after one month, mine does not make any noises after the roof was replaced.

Fingers crossed.

Hello friends, after about a year and a half of driving around with a clunking sunroof, I finally discovered a (admittedly crappy) fix, and wanted to report in.

I tried so many different things. I went to the dealer who dismissed my claims. I tried lubing rails, adding insulating tape, lubing ports, sliders, everything. In a fit of frustration, I took two pieces of pipe insulation tubing that I had been using to try and support the back of the sunroof and placed them across the rails behind the mechanism to raise and lower the sunroof. I drove home from work (after a very long day) and lo and behold, the noise was gone. In fact, the noise has been gone for the last six months or so.

I can't tell you enough what a relief this is. The constant clunking was driving me insane. I'll admit this is a ghetto fix and I'm not certain I can vent my sunroof let alone open it, but honestly this is a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I'd rather have a glass roof that's quiet than a sunroof that drives me crazy, though I can also probably remove the foam in the summer time and deal with it when I want to open the roof.

I am happy to take photos if anyone else is at their wits end. Unfortunately my warranty is expired as I bought the car second hand, but maybe somebody is looking for a solution too.

I have had the same rattles but, after six visits to the dealer they took it upon themselves to order a new roof.
Problem fixed.
Good luck.

Also, I found an old fix last year, in case yours fails.

Found it.

From Oct. 13, THEMIKEJONES post:

Hey team, sending an update and hoping maybe this helps someone else.

After 13 months of trying to resolve this issue, I'm hopeful and optimistic that I have done just that.

This has worked for me and I have been rattle free for about a month now, so ideally this was both the issue and resolution to my problem.

I always had what sounded like glass on metal, a rattle that didn't sound like a loose screw (I checked em all up top, all super tight) but more of glass tapping on something, a piece of metal.

Some days were worse than others, and when the roof was opened even a tiny bit or tilted in the back the noise was gone.

If the roof was closed and the shade drawn I could sometimes hear the rattle even over low radio volume and it drove me nuts.

I purchased the felt pads, sticky on one side, and placed them in different places throughout the sunroof area in spots I thought could be the culprit, both inside the car, on the glass, and in areas of the actual sunroof mechanisms, anywhere that didn't interfere with sliding or moving parts.

Finally, I randomly see this small rail that the glass sits on both on the left and right side and towards the front and only visible when the roof is opened and only because I looked for it.

What I ended up doing was putting one of the felt pads on this rail in the front, and on the back area of the rail, the pad went in easy, and on the front of that rail (closer to the front of the sunroof, basically windshield area) I almost couldn't even get the pad on top of the rail, under the glass.

I had to push up super hard, which corresponded with what I also would do to make the rattle noise go away and kind of how I isolated the area, and got most of the felt pad in there.

Anywho, the pic is zoomed and is the foam above the metal rail in between it and the glass. I have other pics but they are too big to add to this thread evidently.

I did this on both sides and all of my noise issues are gone completely and have not returned. Also, since this is on the inside, there is no concern of water fastness which I have also tested.

So long story short, this so far has resolved a long running issue and the real only thing that I disliked about this car (other than the back windows not rolling down all the way) and I'm stoked it worked for me, but I know other folks may have different causes of their noise issues. It isn't a super clean install by any stretch but you don't see it when it's closed anyways so I'm good with it haha.

Hoping it may work for others out there as well, and should the rattle return any time soon, I'll update yall, but getting close to about a month of no noise now!

Does anyone find that the sunroof creaking is better in the cold ? I think mine was worse in the summertime.
Mine is definitely quieter in cold weather.

thanks! do you have a link to the original post? it's very hard to tell where this actually is. would love to find a better solution so the sunroof actually works, but the quietness has at least allowed me to enjoy driving the car rather than dreading it.

Mine is definitely quieter in cold weather.
This is a sad reminder of owners of the 2007 Lexus LS460 trying to come up with a fix for the outside mirrors that were causing wind noise.
As long as the car is under warranty I would push for the roof to be replaced or fixed until they get it right.
Also those make shift repairs may void the warranty for any future problems that might arise concerning the roof 🤔

Unfortunately I failed to copy the URL. Only the name (THEMIKEJONES) of that poster. Maybe you could try to find it by the name, in this site.

I found it for you. It was originally posted in the KIA Stinger forum back in 2023.

So I found something on a Kia Stinger forum and tried the solution, it worked. While this may not fix all noted issues I did for mine. I used the soft side of some stick on Velcro cut to size for the groove the glass feet sit in when closed.

Sunroof Rattle Fix

This is the happiest I've been with my car in a long time! I found the issue with my sunroof. The rail that the glass rides on has a protrusion coming down. I think it's a foot for the sunroof to rest on. It's circled in the below pic. Now, the sunroof housing has a cutout where that foot...

Hope this helps some of you.
This was 90% of my issue and did the same thing a while back to fix it.

The other was the pressing up on the headliner on this inside of the car

Between those two, almost 100% of my sunroof noise issues have been resolved.

Worth a shot for anyone having clickity clackity issues.

Don’t see adding foam or felt bumpers causing a warranty issue at all. Now if you take out a welder and start welding on the track mechanism or disassemble the glass from the rails, yes, you probably may jeopardize a warranty in the future for the sunroof.
