Imo a car the size and weight of the Genesis, you will be hard pressed to feel anything less than 40 hp, and a cold air intake won't net you that. Maybe a CAI, exhaust, high flow cat., ECU tune, etc will work, but this car doesn't have that kind of aftermarket support.

Another vote for the V6. I drove both. The V6 has plenty of acceleration to get in trouble with.

I'm in agreement here.

I had come to the point where a V6...in any form or fashion was simply not adequate for my "need for speed."

If it had to be a V6, the Lexus IS350 would have been my choice.

To each his own though. There are enough V6 owners here that are more than pleased with the performance!

I have driven both, the V6, and the V8. The V6 has a lighter feel to it when driving the back roads. I decided to go with the V8 because I've never owned one before, and though the V8 is heavier, I've found that with time, you no longer notice it. Also, I took my 4.6 on a trip from Hopkinsville, Ky, to Richmond, Va. I refilled the tank after 512 miles. That's at least 26.1 mpg. I know not of another V8 on the market that can match that. I used mid-grade, and the cruise set on 75 mph.

I have the V6 and the 290 horse moves mighty quick. It has good acceleration from stop and also passing on any two lane highway.
My last car was the Impala SS with the V8 and I can't tell much difference. I haven't driven the V8 with 375hp but unless you just like to GUN your car I don't much need for it.
The best part of the V6 is I get 20+ around town...a mix of city and semi-rural. I also get 27+ on highway trips and got an even 29 once.

I feel the V8 is more muted the sound-wise. The gear shifting also feels different comparing to V6. Also some features (like auto dimming side mirrors and large brakes) are only available with the V8. These features were very important to me and this combining with a small difference in the price tag between V8 and V6 (with similarly equipped options) convinced me to go with the V8 option.
The V6 has a definite advantage when it comes to the car cornering in my opinion.
You need to test drive both for 30+ mins.

Negative, V8 has "premium" leather.
The cost difference is subjective of course but a ~25% gain is not "small". If you could get a brand new Genesis for $24K would you consider that a small discount?

I am a newbie to this forum... I am planning on buying a new Genesis in the next month or so. Hopefully a 2011 (if I like the looks), but possibly a 2010. I think I will go with the V6 unless your experience would recommend other wise. What do you say?

first congrats for considering a Genesis. Regardless which power train you choose you will be selecting a VERY fine automobile.

since you asked here are some answers to your questions:
the v6 may offer better balanced handling due to the lighter motor. I cant tell you because the only v6 i drove was the coupe and it was fast. I chose the v8 sedan because of the amenities, and the v8.

What I can tell you about my experience is this is a very fast car! with an exhaust and intake modds I go 0-60 in about 4.7(8) seconds. If i feather the throttle I can get 31.9 mpg on the hwy avrg 35 if im going with a tail wind! LOL.

At any rate (whatever those are these days) Im very very pleased with my decision to buy a Genesis, and I'm betting that you will too!

It's a better car vs base V8. Unless, of course, u just prefer the "premium" aka foreskin leather and ur favorite movie is the Fast & The Furious.

I used to have a 2009 v6, but I traded it in for a 2011 4.6 . For me it was like day and night. I like the V8 alot more. plus is only $3,000 more.

Then there must be something seriously wrong with either my car or my driving. I get about 20-21 city and like 25 highway at 75-80. Would slowing down that 5-10 really give me that big of change in my mpg?

I test drove both and yes the V6 was real nice and put a smile on my face however the V8 gave me a smile I just can't seem to get rid of. There is a big difference plus the V8 is quieter and has this nice growl at certain acceleration rpms when you bump it.

Hmmm, lets see, you forgot the wood steering wheel, the chrome side trim, larger front discs with 4 piston calipers, illuminated door sills, ultra premium leather, electro hydraulic power steering, limited slip rear differential, 100 AH battery, 180 amp alternator, hyper silver 18" alloys, larger gas tank and drum roll......................385 ponies compared to 290. That my friend is a 33% increase in power and lets not forget the 26% increase in torque at 1000 rpm less. Lets also not forget the world renowned 6 speed ZF transmission.

Test drove both the V6 and V8 back to back, and it was a quick decision for me.
V6 might feel more light, or nimble, but when I'm shopping for a comfy, luxurious sedan, I'm not looking for how it handles on the track or the 'twisties'.
I liked the much smoother engine of the V8 and the power difference was night and day for me.

But as time passes by, I'm starting to wonder if I should've gotten the V6 instead.
I really don't get to use the power of the V8 in the city, and mileage isn't that great @ 18.6MPG. (Calculated with a separate application).
But as soon as I'm on the freeway or when I hear the V8 growl, I forget about the mileage.

Your choice, man. Either way, you can't go wrong.

My Mileage with the V6 in the city is only 1 mpg better than your V8. In fact, if I had really understood the minimal difference in mileage, I would have gone with the V8. ONE trip I averaged 26.5 mpg with the V6, but otherwise at 80 mph, cruise controlled, the car does 24.5 mpg AT BEST. I think the V8 on the highway does about the same.

I still think the V6 corners better in town, but with what I know now I'd go with the V8. Of course, I was also trying to look ecologically responsible, too. But I feel a bit cheated by the V6 mileage performance that is getting WORSE with time. Note, this is a change in my vote over time, and I still want to hear from some people who calculate their gas mileage themselves as to the true mileage of the 8. After all, some of us want our vehicle to be great. But if the 8 is making the mileage advertised, then I would go with the 8.

Finally, I don't know if this is crazy or not, but I put synthetic oil in the Genesis, and the mileage has gotten worse since I did it. Was done at the dealer.

Has nothing to do with the oil, actually it should be the same or if it could be measured (I say so because it is so small) you should be getting better milage.

Theory, you are getting used to the car and the foot has gotten heavier.

Your theory makes more sense than my theory. Still, 80 miles an hour on cruise control is the not a heavy foot problem.

I do believe that certain road surfaces matter, as I note that I get better gas mileage in Florida than I do on the highways of south Georgia. It seems to me, admitting my subjectivity, that the roads in Florida ARE smoother.

Well actually it is, Try 65 or even better 60 and the mpg will improve substantially.
