  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know if it’s safe to drive if you have the “check limited slip differential “ warning? The car seems to be running fine even with the warning, but I don’t want to cause any damage.
I was told it was safe to drive until they could get me in the dealership.

I’m not sure if you’ve answered this already. But what exactly was the issue and what did they do once you did get into the dealership? If you’ve had your car serviced by now.*

Also do you know what the ELsd actuator does?

Actually, they replaced the LSD twice in less than 8K miles and instead of lemon lawing the car, which the second repair took 30 days, I stupidly traded it on a 2024 GV70 SP, which cost more money and that cars engine blew at 780 miles requiring an entire new engine and transmission, which is totally unacceptable for a brand new car. It's now been 34 days since they've had the car and I'm in the middle of getting Genesis to buy the car back and I will be out of this nightmare, when done. As you can tell, I'm not happy with Genesis at all and just want out.

What an eLSD does is give your car more traction to the wheels when needed.

Wow I’m sorry you had to go through all that. I can understand why you’d wanna switch. So far this has been the only issue. *fingers crossed*. I’m hoping it’s nothing more than an actuator swap.

Ahh thank you! I was actually more so wondering what the actuator for the eLSD does more so then the actual differential.

It's kind of a big surgery. If they have the LSD in stock, which given these things go out on a LOT of GV70s, hopefully, they do. It's a one day job. My second one required a team of engineers to come from Genesis and they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work right.

So after waiting about a month to get my car into the service center. They said they ran some tests and couldn’t get the message to show up again and the error code doesn’t show up in the history. Could it have fixed itself?

Not likely. I had to have two eLSD's replaced in my first GV70 and in neither situation did an error code appear. But they were making the sound which is common to the issue, so there were no questions about replacing it either time. Another tell tale sign if the eSLD issue is when you get in the car and start driving, before the engine comes to temp, do you feel any vibration at 42 mph? Also, if you have an issue, when you are driving over 50 mph and let your foot off the gas, do you hear a high pitched, like you're blowing through the top of a coke bottle, sound? If yes, your eSLD is going bad.

My GV70 never coded either, but the differential emitted a whistling noise from the LSD. I called my service manager, he ordered all the parts required and notified me of my appointment when they all arrived. Took the car in, got the loaner G70 and 4 days later retrieved my car. They found two bearings that were showing wear and replaced those as well. Am happy to report that the replacement and fix is still excellent as expected. Silent and smooth.

There were metal filings in mine the first time. The second time, I never got the car back as Genesis decided to study my car, which I wound up trading in (really stupid decision on my part as it cost me more money), and got a 2024 GV70, to have it blow its engine at 780 miles (which requires replacing the entire engine and transmission, which I'm unwilling to accept). I'm in the middle of a buy back on that one. My experience with Genesis has been awful, though my dealer was good at least.

The differential in my vehicle also had metal shavings in the oil. They found that in the second diff as well. So far in the 3rd diff it is working well. I'm quite aware of the sound and I'm always watching out for it. But thus far it is operating normally. In fact the car is indeed very quiet, I think the way it should be. Just that I didn't know any better.

Have you resolved the back back yet? We have not heard an update. I hope your negotiation is going well with Genesis and you get a full refund.

How many miles in did you have the issue.
I explained to the tech I heard some noises but they returned the car saying they didn’t hear anything or see any lights go off. I guess in time I will tell. Thank you

The first eLSD had to be replaced at about 4400 miles and the second at about 7800 miles.

I’m on my third rear differential in a little over a year and under 20 K miles. Each time I take it in for an oil change they replace the rear diff. Maybe the third time will be the charm. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Who the hell knows.

While not the "most expensive" near luxury cars out there, Genesis cars aren't inexpensive and there is simply NO EXCUSE for bad engineering. My first case manager had the audacity to try to suggest Genesis is a new brand. It may be a new name, but a new brand it is NOT. Hyundai and Kia have been building cars for more than half a century and they have the engineering and resources needed to ensure their cars are reliable. The eLSD is simply a poor design and my dealer says they're replacing one in a GV (all the GV's have this issue) at least once a week. And they cost about $4500 for each replacement. That's sad and unacceptable, tbh. As far as I'm concerned, Genesis is simply not ready for prime time.

Agreed. It’s a design flaw. Oh and I didn’t mention the full transmission replacement they did after a week of owning the vehicle. I have a 21 GV80 with the 3.5 with zero issues which is what gave me the confidence on the 70. Think about it, 4.5 K times 3 on differentials plus another 3.5 for the transmission. I’m thinking of filing a lemon law case as I live in NY..

If you didn't see my post about my second GV70 having the engine blow at 780 miles is enough to make me NEVER want to own a Genesis again. I'm in the final stages of buyback, just waiting for them to formally approve it.

Hoping my second LSDiff is golden and don't have to invoke the Lemon Law. Staying positive and confident as is my nature. Please let us know when your drama and issue is remedied and how your bottom line faired.

Will do. They need to give me 100% of the price I pad. I only had the car one month.

Curious, how did you initiate the buy back?
I called Concierge and described the horror story, who then opened a case for me, after which a case manager was assigned and I formally said the ONLY solution I would accept given my brand new, one month old car had the engine blow (due to Genesis admitting a robot deposited an extra bolt in the transfer case, which eventually - at 780 miles - blew threw the engine destroying, the engine, crank case and transmission). The car has been at the dealership going on two months now. They told me yesterday, they had the parts to build a new engine, but puhleeze, Genesis couldn't even send a complete engine to the dealer. They sent what is essentially all the parts to build an engine from pieces. Simply not something I'm willing to accept. Not to mention, when a car is built, the engine is coded to the VIN, so replacing the engine has to be tracked, devaluing the car.
