If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First-time poster here, in the market for a replacement for my Infiniti G35 in the next few months (no later than the end of Q1 '011). The Genesis sedan has certainly caught my eye. It's well within my price range (up to around $50k), and I like what I've read and seen about it so far.

For those of you who did some comparison shopping and chose the Genesis, what else did you look at and why did you decide on the Genesis over the others?

TIA.

I actually had a G37 on order. I really wanted the adaptive cruise control and whent he told me it woud be an other three months, I cancelled the order and choose the Genesis. Only thing I don't like is the noises the engine makes after a cold start, and when accelerating (V-6)

I test drove the Infiniti G37x and the Lexus ES 350. I ultimately chose the Genny because it felt bigger and more luxurious. What I really wanted was a Mercedes E350 but I didn't want to spend that kind of money. With the Genny I felt like I'd be getting that level of car but only paying the entry-level price.

I really wanted a rear drive car so my choices were somewhat limited unless I wanted to get way over the $50k mark. I don't like the 300C (my sister has one) and the Dodge Charger does not offer some of the amenities I prefer. I also wanted a 4 door (other car is a Vette) so that ruled out Camero, Mustang and Challenger. The Genesis does it for me. It's extremely comfortable, great power and mileage. I've never second guessed my decision to get one.

Great thread, thanks, though most of the cars in the poll are way above my price range.

Some of the comments about the Infiniti M are interesting. When I bought my G35 almost 9 years ago, it was where the Genesis seems to be today in terms of price:features. But when I looked at the M recently, I was surprised how expensive they were.

If you are in the 35k range and need RWD, the choices are few. G37,Chrysler 300,Cadillac CTS. If you don't need RWD, the choices are many.

I drove a used BMW 3.35 bi-turbo, (2008)and was impressed with the smoothness of the drivetrain, and the relatively excellent fuel mileage.

But I was amazed at the:

1. Ugliness of the interior relative to the Genesis (Clearly this is a taste issue)

2. The persistence of polarized lenses inside that made the radio unreadable if wearing polarized sunglasses.

3. The remarkably small back seat.

4. The pinching in the trunk that lessened useful space.

5. The incredibly scary rating on Consumer Reports for repairs

6. The unbelievable lack of useful storage space, and worthless cup holders.

7. The cost of replacing run-flat tires, or the risk of going without a spare.

I drove an used M35 for comparison.

1. I couldn't stand the thrashiness of the engine, and

2. The BIG BOAT FEEL it gave when trying to corner, even with the Sports Package.

3. And with the Sports Package the ride was much jitterier than the Genesis'.

4. Space with the Infiniti M, and the front seat amenities, were better than those of the Genesis, in my opinion.

5. I liked the looks of the Genesis much better.

I looked at everything you can think of under $40k and rwd, new and used. That said, the Genesis won out over mainly the M35 and the GS because it offered more room, performance, and amenities in a nicer package that was from a brand showing good reliability in its products. One year of ownership and the car has been problem free except for the steering column TSB that effected 09s, and was fixed with a reprogramming update.

I have driven Mercedes S Class sedans for the past 20 years, buying them a couple of years old and driving for 5 or 6 years. I had begun looking for my next car and thought about going to a slightly smaller car this time. Looked at the E Class and BMW 5 series and then discovered the Genesis. There was no comparison in my mind when it came to quality, performance and value. I bought a new 2010 4.6 Genesis and feel it was an outstanding decision. I really like the way the car drives and rides and love the features and amenities.

2011 Infiniti G37 Technology package - $43,875
2011 Audi A4 Quattro Prestige - $43,615 (It was actually $46065 with S package because 2 Audi dealers in WA did not have the Prestige model without the S package)

I had my mind set on buying the Audi A4 but the only way to get the intelligent keyless entry (which comes standard with Genesis) was to get the prestige package. I couldn't justify spending over $46k for a car with no V6 and no interior space. My friends had trouble sitting in the back and every single one of them tried to convince me not to get the Audi. After 2 visits and spending few hours at the dealership, I ended up walking away.

Infiniti had a very impressive engine. It was so much fun to drive. However, only technology package came with adaptive cruise control and rain sensing wipers. It was not spacious at all and the interior actually felt very cheap. My 2008 Lexus IS250 had better interior in my opinion. The buttons, controls, and just the whole interior design could use a little improvement.

I walked into a Hyundai dealership on the way Genesis really impressed me. After 2 months I ended up purchasing my first ever Hyundai. :)

The G37 with the tech package is within my price range, but as you say, it's not spacious. I doubt if it's any roomier than my 2003 G35. A few years ago I was thinking that the M would be my next car, but even the less expensive model configured the way I want is above $50k. If I were in that market, which I'm not, I'd look seriously at the Equus.

At the other end, I did consider the Cadillac CTS, but I can't get past the styling.

My other car is a 2007 Lexus GS350. It is small compared to my 2011 Genesis. If my Genesis continues to be the car I think it is, next March I will trade my Lexus in and get another 2011 Genesis.

We were looking at the IS 350 and M35. IS was too small for me and I really don't like paying for "the Lexus lifestyle" Basic oil change is 69.95. The M35 was nice. Poor gas mileage and wife did not like the flat finish on the wood. Go figure. I made the right choice. Genesis is a fine ride for the money.:cool:

we drove a Lexus ES350 (2010 - nice car but insipid, also way too expensive for a tarted up camry
we drove a Buick Lacrosse (2010 - nice interior, but otherwise seemed "crude" compared to either the ES or the Genesis
also looked at the Avalon, but again -a tarted up camry
Genesis won by a landslide!!

Other cars considered before buying the 2009 4.6

Bmw 535 (price, not a turbo fan)
G8 GXP (I couldn't pull the trigger with the brand dying)
CTS 3.6 (this was pre DI, wasn't very good)
Infiniti M 35 (not enough car for the money)
STS (50k for a 320 hp 20 year old v8?... no thanks)

I started out looking at Mercedes C350 which drove real nice and had good ride. But a little small and few tech features. The stereo and the interior just so so. Expensive to maintain. Nice looking car.

Took a test drive of the Genesis and was blown away. First really liked the styling, then sat in the back seat and loved all the room back there. I then knew I had to have car with lots of room.

Then thought about an Audi A6 which is an attractive car as well, but I'd have to buy CPO to fit it under $40K. And again, more expensive to maintain.

So with the Genesis you get the spacious luxurious interior, big horsepower V8 engine, 5 year warranty, loads of tech stuff, awesome stereo, and handsome looks.

Just bought a 4.6 last month. I wanted something nice and powerful with a big enough back seat for my growing sons. I tested the following cars before deciding on the 4.6.

- Genesis 3.8, Great car but the v8 was intoxicating.
- Acura TL, great handling car. Great tech. Uglier than sin (car would be tolerable to look at if Acura fixed the beak)
- Crysler 300C (S8 package), nice driving car, but the interior was garbage compared to the Genesis. Also, my wife hated the way it looks.
- Infiniti M35/56, another great driving car, nice tech, but couldn't justify the price premium over the Genesis. Also, back seat was a little cramped compared to the Genesis.
- Ford Taurus SHO, awesome tech package (Best media system I have ever used. All car companies should strive for this level of functionality and ease of use. drives great (the ecoboost v6 is a great engine), but the cabin is to cramped. It is a very large vehicle, but the interior space is lacking.
- BMW 5 series, hands down an awesome ride. If I did have the family obligations or was a richer man. I would be driving this vehicle.

While the styling on the Genesis is derivative, its a handsome, great driving car with solid build quality. I don't think there is anything else on the market that offer as much value. I am extremely happy with this purchase and hope to have many enjoyable years of driving my 4.6.
