If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys here's the situation.

I have an '09 Genesis 4.6, and for some reason or another yesterday i left my set of keys in the driver's side door pocket and from the outside, i locked the door using the door handle button. I hadn't noticed that my keys were inside the car until this morning.

Now I'm guessing that for security reasons, after a moment's time the car does not award locking/unlocking action even if the key fob is near. (i know its different if the key fob was inserted into the slot in the middle-bottom of dash)

It's not too much of a biggy since my dad has the other set of keys and i will just use his physical key to open the door this evening, one day sans car is okay, but here are some questions:

- Is there a way to unlock the door even if the keys are inside? Maybe a trick that i don't know about like holding down the door handle lock/unlock button for 30 secs, etc.?

- how long does it take for the car to discontinue recognizing the key fob, so that it does not allow the doors to unlock even with the key fob being near?

- has this ever happened to any of you guys and how did you guys alleviate the situation?

Let me know guys, maybe there's something I can do before my dad gets here which will be very very late into the night.

GRACIAS

It all depends on the proximity sensor, but most cars I've had experience didn't lock the door if the sole key/fob was inside the car.
As soon as the key fob passes the border(outside the window), it'll lock.
I've found the sensors(in general) to be very precise.

Maybe the key being very close to the door(inside the door pocket) made the sensors to think that the key was actually outside.
Good thing it didn't keep you stranded.

Interesting and good to know. yea only if i left the keys in the cup holders? haha. yea good thing work is walking distance, though it was a long walk

Also, that 800 number on the rear side window will bring a free locksmith to get you into the car.

Yes, don't put your key in the driver's door pocket! In fact, when at all possible, keep your key in your purse or your pocket.

I accidentally left my key fob in the trunk of my 2009 3.8 the other day. I closed the trunk lid and got that sustained warning sound that tells you the key fob is inside the car and the lock will not work. I tried the trunk lid and it was not locked. I retrieved the key fob. No harm done. Don't know why Deejank's car allowed itself to be locked.

somewhat unrelated but closest I could find. I've only been able to do research about the car on the internet and was reading about the security system. does the car have a regular key or just the proximaty key? and what happens when the battery in the proximaty key dies? can you not start your car? closest dealer for me is over 60 miles away and I do all my own maintence on my vehicles. so I'd hate to have rely on the dealer for something that basic. my garage door can program it's own keys.

I don't understand how you did this. My key falls out of my pocket in the car a lot.. and the car will not let me lock it if the key is inside..

Deejank--

You're an embarrassment to this forum. I would recommend you leave the big car to your dad and shuttle out of town in your Ford Escort--

The keyfob contains a removable physical key that can be used to unlock the cabin and trunk (but not to start the car). If the keyfob battery dies you can start the car by inserting the keyfob into the port in the dashboard. This completes the necessary circuit so the Start button will work.

I literally just did the same thing! Without a spare, how can I get the door to unlock aside from calling a locksmith?
