  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Wanted to share with anyone looking to install this on a 2025+ GV80, as I just finished the install.

Backstory: Had two of these modules for our previous 19 Stinger and 21 Telluride, so was already familiar with these. Was hoping to reuse one of those in the new car by off chance it would work, but that wasn't the case, so ordered 2 new modules from Shark for our 25 GV80 and G80.

Anyone not wanting to have to deal with splicing into the vehicle's wiring, I did find a very nice alternative. There is a seller on Etsy that has created a prebuilt cable that will tie into the OEM Factory Trailer plug that is already installed at the rear of the car, underneath the floor of the trunk, to the left of the battery. This allows you to just simply 'plug and play' the device. This seller also sells the Auto Lock module, if you would like to just purchase everything from him. He also has very nice instructions that are much more informative than Shark's "4 pictures of plugs where you can tap into" that comes with the modules.

Talking with the seller, he recommended the EV9 option in his store, as the plugs were the same. If you want to get both the module and plug for the 2025+ may want to contact him before ordering. I did let him know that it worked just fine, so I'm assuming he'll be updating his shop soon.

Installation instructions: (I'll attach to this post)
These were currently labeled for 21-24, but everything was pretty much the same for my 25.

For those that don't care about the easy to use plug, or already has a trailer harness installed with a hitch, tapping into that trailer harness plug is much easier than having to dealing with the wires behind the driver's foot panel. I'd highly recommend using some of these wire taps, as traditional ones aren't nearly as easy to use, and don't require a crimper.

This is the ONE feature our '13 SRX had that our GV80 doesn't have, and I miss it. However, a couple of points / questions:

1) Like one of the comments in the video suggested, this functional change SHOULD be an OTA update to the vehicle's OS. The hardware already has all of the required signals available to it, so it would not require any additional hardware to implement. However, I'm not going to hold my breath on Genesis making this kind of change.

2) Its not entirely clear how this device, just from the signals available in a trailer harness (brake, L & R turn signals), can determine door closure status or key fob presence within the interior, or can activate the door locks. Is there some magical wireless communications going on between this device and the vehicle's computer & key fob? If so, then either this needs to be "keyed" to both the vehicle and key fob to prevent some other person with a similar vehicle and key fob gaining access to your car. No?

Color me skeptical at this point. After a year, I've gotten back into the habit of manually locking our GV80 when its parked.

It does not appear that the "brake, L & R turn signals" are available at this connector. Where did you see anything saying they were?
I believe that power (and ground) and the can-bus signals are at that connector. This why an actual trailer harness adapters include an electronic module that reads the can-bus and generates the brake and turn signal drives from that. Data about the locks and signals being received (and a bunch of other stuff) is available on the can-bus, as well as the ability to send commands to lock and unlock the car and such. There is no real encryption involved. If you can access the can bus without breaking into the car, you can command it to unlock the car. I can't remember which one, but there is at least one brand of car that you can pull the connector off one headlight from under the car and use the bus connection to unlock the car. Some thieves are doing this.
This device would not make your car more vulnerable to anything. It's not magic. It does not need to be "keyed" to the car. Your car only responds to your smart keys, so only your smart keys will trigger the data that the module uses to decide to send the lock or unlock command.

Interesting! This is one of my largest gripes. I may have to try this out. Looks like it preventa a lock event if the key is left in the car, at least according to his video. Unless there's a difference with the GV80 which may be the case.

Thanks joegr, that explains a lot. I recently purchased a factory "trailer harness" that contains a 7-pin round connector connected to a module, which connects to another connector in the vehicle's harness. I just assumed it was essentially a "buffer" for the trailer light signals to prevent shorts from harming the vehicle's electronics. Its apparently much more sophisticated than that.
