Help me with my Genesis purchase

Hello all,

First let me apologize if this has been asked before. I have done a search on the site and really haven't found that much answers.

I am looking into purchasing a 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 Grey exterior and Black Interior. The car currently has approx 19,000 KM on it and I would be the second owner. The first owner for some reason traded it in at a Audi dealership.

One of the Hyundai Dealerships in the Toronto area found it and purchased it, and I would be purchasing it from them. The Genesis comes with a set of
Winter tires and they are Yokohama V-drive with their own rims. Also the car comes with Summer tires and they-are Dunlop SP Sport 5000

The car also comes with a trunk liner, floor mats and 3m protection for the hood. (Not exactly sure what to call the protection) I currently drive a 2009 Chevy Malibu LTZ with less then 33,00 KM (comes with a set of winter tires also Yokohama and the all season tires that came with the car) after negotiation the purchase price would be $33,000km taxes all fees etc included in the price. The dealer will also throw in free oil changes as long as I take the car for maintenance at their dealership.

I should also mention that I am located in the Kitchener/Waterloo area and we get moderate snow here.

A few questions

1 How does the Genesis handle in the winter? I have never driven a rear wheel car before. I understand its important to have winter tires, but this car will have that

2. Would it be wise to switch to synthetic oil due to the weather where I live?

3. Should I wait for the 2012 model? I am interested in seeing the Onstar like system that is supposed to be coming out, and the lane avoidance system like Ford's BLISS seems like a good idea. Will older cars be able to be upgraded to the new Onstar like system

1. I believe "3M Protection for the hood" is a clear sheet over the front of the hood, and around the headlamps, to protect the paint but I could be wrong. Very expensive to apply.

2. Don't know about the price, because everything costs more in Canada.

3. As for the 2012 Genesis having an "On-Star" type system, my reply is
Why does anyone want a system that can track your location anywhere?
If I were ever to buy a GM car, the first thing would be to make sure that On-Star was disabled, smashed, broken, or whatever. I don't need the Government, any government tracking me. (I know, On-Star is not government, but Government can get that information from On-Star).

4. You've never had a RWD car before! I can't believe that there are people so young that all they ever had were FWD cars. (yes, I'm old <grin>)
I learned to drive in February, in snowy Rochester NY, many years ago. My dad showed me how to do it in the snow and ice, and I still use his instructions to this day. RWD, no Positraction, no Electronic Traction Control, none of that stuff, but never got stuck or run off the road either. If you do get the 2011 Genesis, (with snow tires), whenever you are on snow or ice, and at a stoplight or stop sign, place the shift lever in the manual position, and push the lever up to "2" so you will start off in 2nd gear. Less power to the wheels, and less chance for the wheels to spin. (Once moving, put lever back in automatic).
5. If dealer is going to do oil changes free, use what he has. If you think it is too cold for his oil, bring your own 5W-20 full synthetic, and still have the dealer do the free labor and filter, using your oil. (watch them do it as you don't want the technician to use dealer oil, and keep your synthetic oil for himself).

Go ahead and get the Genesis, but due to all the power the car has, keep your eye open for the OPP.

Another subject. Had many a good times in Greater Toronto area. Had a girlfriend in Dunnville and another in Selkirk (on Lake Eire). (Also many years ago, another in Stoney Creek and another in Orillia - ah yes, those were the days). (I guess I had something for Canadian girls <grin>). At the moment, I have a very good friend just NW of you in Elmira ON. He always tells me how cold it is there at the moment. <grin>.

Due to cost of new cars I always spend the extra few dollars for synthetic oil 5w30. I keep cars for several years and sell them when they reach about 225,000 miles so I like the extra protection of synthetis oil. I would not use synthetic if I sold the car at 100,000 miles or less.

First of all, that price for a Canadian 2011 V8 is too good to be true. The car is $49,995 new in Canada. That basically means you're buying the car for a little over 30k + taxes? It is not even close to book value. Something doesn't sound right to me.
I bought a 2009 V6 with slightly less KM for almost the same price last month. That was about book value and I checked around.
As for rear wheel drive, you will get used to it. Some members here drive around with extra weight in their trunk (Kitty litter etc). Mine came with Yokohama Ice Guard IG-20's which I like, so I think the V-drive should be okay. I have not tried the Dunlops that came with the car, but a lot of people do not like them.
I have only used synthetic oils in my cars for the last 20+ years, for me it's worth the extra $.
If you wait for the 2012, you will be paying 20k+ more that the deal you mentioned

Yes its an amazing price... The starting price for the 2011 was $44K, they really want to get rid of the car (end of month etc) so I was able to negotiate the price with trading in my Malibu down to $33K out the door all taxes etc included.

I know its an amazing deal, I've been shopping around and a 2010 with aprox 20-30K is going for $39,999-$44,000 for the V8 here in SouthWestern Canada

I'm thinking if I do purchase the car I will ask them to switch to synthetic.

I agree that $33k sounds like a very good deal for a V8 Genesis with basically 1 years worth of mileage. Does that purchase price include your Malibu as a trade-in? Make sure the car has no accident history (another possibility why the price is so low).

The Genesis handles just fine in the snow with a set of good winter tires - which the Yokohama V-Drive definitely are - although a little extra weight in the trunk certainly helps. The advice about turning off the traction control (ESC) when pulling out of slippery intersections is very true, but overall the car is great on snow & ice. Just be sure to find an big empty snow covered parking lot to get used to the RWD handling when you first get the car.

Synthetic Oil is always a good idea in cold climates like ours if you intend to keep the car a while. If you only plan to keep the car a 2-3 years (I have a 3-year lease) and change the oil every 6k like I do, then the regular Dino oil is fine.

You will pay a LOT more for an equivilent 2012 and I really don't think OnStar is that big a benefit since you already have GPS on-board. Just buy a good Cellphone and connect it through Bluetooth with the car. Just as useful in my opinion.

Heed crtcbob's advice though, watch your speed. You will find yourself travelling much faster than you realise, the car is so quiet.

$33K includes trade in etc. Car history looks good but I don't really trust carfax that much. Additionally 2010 models that I looked at with trade in were roughly 30-32K with trading in my Malibu.

The dealer provided me with Carproof report not a Carfax report. Any idea how reliable the Carproof report is? I do have the VIN number for the Genesis if anyone has a free carfax report that I could use? Are their any other sites that let you check vehicle history?

CarProof is quite widely used in Canada and often has better history on Canadian vehicles. It should be trustworthy. Dealers are required by law to advise potential owners if a vehicle they are buying has had any collision damage or repairs. It doesn't hurt to ask the specific question though.

It looks like low mileage 2009 Malibus are trading here in the $17k-$20k area so that means you would have about $50k invested in a used Genesis. For that kind of money you could buy a new model.

What is owed on the Malibu is the question. If its paid off, bad deal. If it still has a decent amount left on the loan obviously thngs look a lot better.

I understand what you're saying but the last line about saving approx 20k I don't agree with. You have to forget about the trade in for a moment. You're saving about 5.7k for buying a used 2011 with 19,000KM on it! Not that much of a deal from MSRP IMHO.

I understand what your saying and it will be something I consider, I haven't signed any papers etc and I can walk away any time I want. I will test drive the car one more time and go from their.

I got my driving license from Winnipeg, MB like 20+ years ago. And if you never drove a RWD before and I know GTA has lots of snow, I will be very very careful especially you have a lot of ponies under hood. the worst thing is not the RWD on the snow by the driving habit that comes with FWD or AWD that you had in this so many years, one little error on the snow can be fatal for you and others. Just be careful my friend.

Thank you for the warning, it is a considerable jump in HP from what I am currently driving and RWD to boot so it can be a dangerous combination.
