I had a chance to drive Genesis 3.8, 4.8 and Equus last week.

The Hyundai dealer loan me a Genesis 3.8 while my Genny4.6 is being repaired.

To make it short, I was very disappointed with Gen3.8.
It almost feel more like Sonata than Genesis family.

For $10K more Gen4.6 is FAR better than 3.8 that doesn't even have navigation tech package.

---

But comparing Gen4.6 with $59K Equus Signature, I just don't see $15K worth in Equus.

Yes, Equus rides much more smoothly; you can't feel the pot holes.
But that's about it...

Ok, there are few more goodies,

Both front seats have cool air seat,
back side windows have screen,
hmmm what else...

ahhhh FREE ipad !

For this do I want to pay $15000 more?
I am not so sure....as of now anyway....

But actually the best thing about Equus is that the owner does't have to come to dealer for oil change or repair service. The dealer employee will bring a Genny or Equus loaner and take the car to repair and bring it back to owner's home when it is done.
Nice, huh?

For $6000 more, I can get mini refrigerator, stretch back seat with leg holder. Well, this Ultimate Equus is designed for those lucky guys with chauffeur.

Well, I don't have a chauffeur...so forget the Equus ultimate...

Sorry, Dude, but this is an ignorant statement.

Are you sure it wasn't a Sonata? - I test drove the 3.8 and 4.6 and there was not that much of a difference at all. But I agree that the few extra bucks for the 4.6 is almost a no-brainer.

Sorry dood... at least THE ONE I drove was not in good shape...
If you drove THAT car, you would say the same.

(that 3.8 Genny had only 2000 miles on it...it should be like new...
maybe the dealer didn't take care of the loaner?)

Ha ha,,, maybe the Dealer put Lexus logo on Sonata?;)

I felt much much more difference between Gen 3.8 and 4.6 than 4.6 and Equus. Pricewise, $10k vs 15k ...

Comparing all 3 ... Gen 4.6 Tech package seem to have the best value and bang for your money. Period.

Equus is more upscale. more luxury than luxury sport. funny thing is the genesis actually has a tiny advantage in interior volume yet the equus looks way bigger lol.

The only real thing I noticed different about Equus was suspension.

This is what I think Hyundai should do for Equus.

1. Lower the price of "Signature" to about $50K and heck with back seat luxury items. <== this is for those who will drive himself.

2. For "Ultimate", this is the one for those who has "chauffeur".

But the back seat with recliner was not big or long enough.
I am only 5'7" but even I could not stretch my leg all the way.

Hyundai should make the base of "Ultimate" longer and make the massage seat better, much better now. (Current massage chair was a joke, it was just tickling me)

I'll say those guys who can afford chauffeur can certainly spend $10K to 20K more for Equus. I think Hyundai should put more luxury stuff on "Ultimate" Equus....But cut price on "Signature" model.

I think this will be the winning model for Equus.

I have owned both the Sonata and the now the Genesis 3.8......like them both, but no comparison in terms of power, interior volume and quality along with the list of amenities. Perhaps the loaner you drove was not maintained properly, but I can speak from empirical evidence that the Genesis is superior to the Sonata in just about every manner possible. ;)

Ok Ok,,, my bad...

I SHOULD have test drive Sonata the SAME week before I made that claim.

But don't ya think Gen3.8 to Sonata is similar to Lexus 350 to Camry?
I feel Lexus 350 is really a Camry padded with few luxury items....

Remember...you asked!

Heated steering wheel
Sun shade on rear windows (already mentioned)
Knee air bag
Lane departure warning system (visual and audio warning and finally strong tug on seatbelt) If you use your signal when making lane changes, it will not warn you.
Collision prep system
rear audio and climate control (driver can disable if need be)
rear dual zone climate control
I-pad (already mentioned)
Wiper de-icer
Both front seats heated and cooled
Rear seats heated
Power head rest adjustment
Adaptive shocks for sport/auto suspension. Sport mode tightens up steering, shocks, and changes the way the transmission shifts. It is noticeable.
Air suspension (auto leveling/height adjustment) Personal note-I raise the height of the car when getting out because it's easier for me. It automatically lowers when going over 40 mph.
Chrome plated wheels
Suede headliner
Solar glass (Genesis may have that, I've forgotten)
Massage driver seat
Room for 5 passengers

Equus Ultimate package also has:
Power trunk
Front camera
Refigerated storage
Rear entertainment system
Power recline seat
Room for 4 passengers

As far as other specs, (like interior room) the Equus was bigger, with the exception of headroom in front-but the differences could only be measured by 10ths. One notable exception is the Equus is about 700 lbs heavier (this was comparing to V8 engines for both).

Personal opinion...having owned a 3.8 Genny, a 4.6 Genny, and an Equus:
The superior ride is a big difference from Genny to Equus. Really noticeable. As someone mentioned, the Equus is a luxury car. I haven't been disappointed in it's get up and go which some reviews implied I would be. I think the Equus is quieter, but that's not saying the Genesis was a slouch, it was quiet, too. The finishes in the Equus are nicer (better be, right). The Genesis is sport/luxury and is a more nimble car. I preferred the 4.6 Genny to the 3.8 because of the transmission (if I had to choose between them). Between all three, I prefer the Equus.

Forgot a big difference!
Genesis-$
Equus Signature-$$
Equus Ultimate- $$+1/2$

NO. Not even close. The ES350 is indeed a tarted-up Camry. On the other hand, the Genesis, even the 3.8, is a completely different vehicle than the Sonata in every respect: power, size, features, comfort, noise level. No comparison. I was given a Sonata loaner when I brought my 3.8 in for service and I couldn't wait to get back into the Genny.

I am frankly puzzled how you can make a statement like this.

The thread title should be changed to what's the difference between a Genesis 3.8 and a Sonata.;)

ggg yeah, I asked for it, didn't I ;) ?
Thanks for the update.
Lane change warning seem to be significant safety improvement.

I didn't realize there were that many difference !
I didn't do my usual homework before the test drive.
But the salesman didn't seem to know everything about the Equus either.

Like you said, RIDE was very Different. Much more smooth.

BTW, how do you like the massager?
I thought Hyundai should put a better one or get rid of it.

Signature?
Maybe, if the price is little bit lower. (I don't care about the back seat luxury stuff, get rid of it)

Ultimate?
No, unless a chauffeur comes with the car AND only if they make the rear seat better, much better.

I also drove a 3.8 but the sales guy was with me so it definately was not as fun!!!

Ha ha.. people seem to be more obsessed with those comparison than Genny to Equus. :o) (which was NOT the main topic here..)

Why no fun ?

When I test drove Equus, there was a salesman with me, too.

But as I was entering to Freeway, I pushed accelerator to the floor !
He seem to be a bit rattled and nervous.... but that's not my problem, or is it? :O)

Hmmm looks like my thesis of comparing Genny 3.8 to Lexy 350 was proven to be wrong again :O(
Ouch !

Jon seems like every time you reply you get in more hot water! (behind the computer screen, I'm laughing)

I looked up the stats and the differences were small, though the Equus with that one exception was always bigger. Lengthwise, the Equus is a bit longer and I remember when I visited my brother he said your car is as long as my truck. The back seat seems way bigger, everyone who sees the Equus and saw my Genny agrees. The back seats even slightly recline and will sit back upright when you turn off the car (mimicking the easy out drivers seat). It makes you wonder who's doing the measuring.

I decided on the Signature for the very reason you said, if I'm not back there, who needs it. I do wish I had the power trunk, though. I can see on long trips, it might be nice to have a frig.

The massage seat...my husband uses it every time. It has two settings, and I like the lower massage better than the setting that goes higher, but I don't really use too very often. Me and another Equus owner feel like our driver seat back doesn't cool as well as the Genny, and my suspicion is it's a result of the massage feature, but another owner reports no difference. We'll see how it plays out.

Oh, by the way, I told the salesman that I had read some reviews that the Equus was underpowered, and since I had a Genesis4.6, I wanted to see if I could tell the difference and would it bother me, so I warned him I was gonna floor it, and I did.

<== Yup, You can say that again !
Me and my big mouth always get me in trouble....

<== I agree with you completely !
Rather than spending money on back seats, Give us auto trunk !

But on Frig., when the car is turned off, so is the frig. Not sure how useful this will be.

<== I didn't know there were 2 settings.
Perhaps because I am used to strong massage chair, that Equus massage seat feels like a child's toy.

And interesting point on cool air seat not as powerful as Genny.
Your "thesis" could may well be TRUE :O)

ha ha,,, Yes that's way to do it !!
But the drag racing between Genny 4.6 and Equus,
the winner is clear - the Genny.
