  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 spotted on the lots!

I seem to recall people initally complaining about the laggy shifts in the ZF tranny - which was also programmed to "learn."
Almost all modern transmissions are programmed this way to adjust to the acceleration habits of the driver. I recall than even on a 1998 Toyota I had, when I got my battery replaced (and transmission memory wiped out), the transmission was very jerky until it relearned my driving habits.

just got a 3.8 black/black premium/tech for 40k before taxes. Invoice - $1500 is doable without too much haggling.

be real careful on financing, they wanted to jack up the price $1100 if I went through Hyundai so I ended up going with their crap 5% which I'm going to pre-pay without penalty and be done with it.

If your credit ain't high and you can't prepay...your mileage will vary greatly.

forgot to mention, my radio went dead as I was trying to leave the lot, took 5 ppl 15 min to fix it and nobody knows what it was. Originally they thought it was muted, then one person replaced a fuse off another new car that was standing next to it...not sure if it's a common issue but now you know.

otherwise...tranny is fast enough, bumps get soaked up very nicely, and acceleration is...surprising as there is almost no engine noise and the stupid speedometer is too small.

I really have no idea if you have to trade your TL in to get the competitive rebate or not. As far as comparing the two cars (TL Vs. Genesis) it is too early for any major conclusions as I only have 160 miles on the genesis. I did hit it one time in order to pass and I loved the fact that you don't have to deal with the steering torque of a front wheel drive and the genesis seems to have much more torque. The car has a softer ride than the TL but seems to be very stable and firm. As for the transmission it is probably one of the smoothest I have ever encounter including BMW and Mercedes. You really do't feel the shifts. Time will tell all.

Yeah, that was my point.

A smooth transmission is nice, but not always the most important consideration. In fact, the smoother a transmission shifts, the more difficult it is to make one that is durable and efficient (although modern designs are much more reliable and efficient than they used to be). But one thing that most people hate about transmissions is when (and if) they have a hard time finding the right gear and upshift or downshift at the wrong time.

blah blah blah...picture time!

I used Canon T2i with Canon 17-55mm lens.

o37 did those wheels come with the badges? I'm from NY and I know what the roads and winters are like. Clear bra?

badges are definitely not part of the original and you get a nice big H on the back.

I told the dealer I won't buy a car if it looks like a Hyundai

was told it's a $299 package...I told em I'll take it for free and I'll take a free trunk tray too. All that $1500 under invoice.

as far as clear bra...it sounds like a good idea but I don't know where to get those.

got any referals?

Not in NY. I have CB on my TL for about a year now. Based on pockmarks on the front of the car everywhere but where the CB is...I'd say it does its job. There are 2 types - 3M and Venture Shield. I went with VS based on the fact that it doesn't discolor or orange peel. There are those who will advocate 3M though. One thing for sure don't go to the dealer...they charge too much.

Nice car btw.

Genesis is a looker, especially after I got rid of all the Hyundai badges, not cause I ain't proud to own one but because a slanted H has no wings

I'll be getting one but am always afraid of pain when something new like the tranny is introduced. Granted, it'll be covered but man I just don't like and can't afford the time going to dealerships if there are problems. Do keep us informed, okay?

yea, I'm a fairly active member on forums, Acura guys haven't heard the last of me either :) still going to their meets etc

Enjoy your Genesis. If you don't mind...which Southern California dealer? I'm in San Diego.

I'm in NY...

Which NY dealer, if you don't mind me asking? Sounds like you got a terrific deal!

this has been an issue ever since they started with the 6+ speed auto transmissions. picture you're crusing along in 6th at 55 and need to pass someone the trans has to drop 3 gears, quickly. all 6 speeds struggled with this with the german engineered trans' getting the leg up because they started developing them first. the same will happen with the 8 speeds. i am sure GM, Ford, Dodge will all have to sort through their own issues as well. this is not surprising, the first years of any complicated design will have detracters as well as those swearing it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Just remember if "we" are going to agree that "there's a suspension issue" with all genesis up to this point because all the auto media claims there's one (as some members do as well) how can you dismiss a "trans downshifting issue" coming from the same source. hopefully some members will report back coming from the 6 speed and we'll have more opinions on the issue of 6spd vs 8spd.

Evidently according to the latest JDP report, this transmission hesitation is becoming more frequent.

According to the study, "The problem lies in glitches with engine and transmission and in-car telematics technology. J.D. Power's report says that in the case of engines, "with high fuel prices and more stringent government regulations, automakers are designing engine and transmission software to make their models as economical as possible. However, this sometimes leads to the engine or transmission hesitating when accelerating or changing gears." Thus, consumers this year are reporting this as a problem more often than in past years."

The guys over at IL have been complaining about the throttle tip-in on their long-term 528i.

One review of the 2012 Genesis noticed that the delays got shorter as they drove the Genesis (presumably, the transmission "learning"), but the IL guys are still complaining despite having had their 528i for a while (maybe having diff. drivers ends up confusing the ZF transmission in the 528i?).

Ford and other automakers also introduced transmission systems that were designed to meet dueling consumer demands for better performance and higher fuel economy.

These systems were programmed to look constantly for the most efficient gear, but they made drivers feel as though their vehicles were hesitating.

"Consumers are getting frustrated because it seems like their vehicles are always changing gears when they don't need them to," Sargent said. "The software reacts very quickly, and sometimes it's almost too clever for its own good."
