  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dry Startup noise

I change my own oil and filter using Mobil 1 10/30 which is the max the owners manual recommends. I too have noticed the lifter noise from the first day, I'm sure that it's nothing to worry about, but it shouldn't do it. I say it's the lifters because I believe they tend to bleed down after only an hour or less. I have a mercedes benz CLK 500 that has close to the same type of oil filter cartridge, but that car never has any lifter sounds. The last time I changed the Genesis oil and being as anal as I am, I always check and clean out any "old" oil in the filter cartridge housing before intalling the new (dealer)one. What I have noticed is this, I usually move the car first before I drain the oil, then it only takes me about 30 minutes total and I restart the engine WITHOUT any lifter noise. So my conclusion is it's NOT the the oil filter or lack of a check valve because mine is empty for sure after the oil change and the lifters haven't had a chance to "bleed" down in this short of time. Notice too that even after the car sits for about 15 min. after driving the lifters will start to bleed down causing a slight ticking that goes away in about 2 seconds.

I hear this tapping sound as well on my 2012 3.8 w/tech.

I heard it the first time my car was delivered and they started the engine for me I ask the sales rep about it of course he said it was noting....

I did read in the mannual that upon start up the ESC may case a tapping sound as it performs a self checking test. My sound does seem to fade after I've been driving the car. It has 1000 miles on it now. Anyone know any further info about this effect of the ESC?

I have a 2012 3.8L as well. There is a peculiar noise to these engines but on mine, it sounds more like a high pressure fuel pump/injector noise. Does sounds like a tapping, but it does not sound like valves to me. I am assuming this is just the noise of the direct injection type system. I am not worried about it.

I am new to this forum, but not to Hyundai, or the 3.8 engine. I have a 2008 Veracruz with this same engine, and started noticing the noise mentioned here at initial morning startup after I owned the car for just a short time. My Dealer service Manager told me that the noise comes from the chain tensioner which is hydraulicly operated, and takes a few seconds to pump up after start. I now have over 40,000 miles on the car, have switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic, and the noise is still the sme as it it has been for the last 35,000+ miles. No better....no worse.

I recently was on another Hyundai Forum that had Tech Bulletins. Sure enough, there was a Tech Bulletin that addressed the noise, gives the Service guys some guidlines for what is acceptable and what is not, and the corrective action if the problem is out of tolerance. My Dealer Service Manager was right on with his diagnosis and advice.

While I am not thrilled with the cold start noise, I am thrilled with the car and engine, and will just have to put up with it. No car is PERFECT...yet.

The "knocking" noise on the 2012 is the GDI engine. The 5.0 GDI has similar noise.

The dry startup noise on the 2009-2011 V6 is most likely due to the oil filter being on top of the engine bay, and the fact that the oil drains back in to the engine when shut off (I change my own oil and can attest to the fact that it drains back into crackcase). Not only does this cause dry startup noise, but it makes it very difficult to determine how much oil should be added for oil changes, since it would be extremely unwise to take a dipstick reading while the engine is running. The oil filter is on the bottom of the engine for the 2012 V6 (but obviously harder to get to).

Interesting that Hyundai would move the filter to the bottom of the engine. Since I too change my own oil/filter, I certainly appreciate the convenience of having the filter at the upper location. However, even after the filter was moved to the bottom of the engine where oil "should" be trapped after shutdown, it sounds like the engine is still making some sort of dry startup noise.

Does anyone have a good explanation for where the noise in coming from on the 2012 V6.

Mark 888. Interesting that the 5.0 engine has a similiar noise. Is the filter on that engine on the top or bottom? Does the 4.6 make this noise, and where is the filter located on that engine?

The oil filter on 4.6 and 5.0 is on bottom of engine. I don't have the 4.6, but I do not recall complaints about dry startup noise on the 4.6.

OK guys, I see lots and lots of thery, and I see all kinds of ideas, but has anyone found a true fix for this morning clatter? Mine is worse if the car sits for 3 or 4 days and if we don't find a fix I'm holding back on my Genesis promotional party! Help!
