  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Had my 2012 3.8 for 3 months now, I noticed the average gas mileage reporting seems at least 0.8 miles higher than my own calculation after filling up the gas.

Do you see anything similar? For my suburban New Jersey driving, I constantly get between 20.8 to 21.8MPG. However, it's always 0.7 or 0.8 higher than my own calculation (using total mileage divided with the gas filled up.)

Why?

really depends on your driving style and trip..

I seem to average about 25.6 MPG overall but my worst tank was 214 (averaged 10.6 MPG) and best was 481 (averaged 27.8 MPG).

214 was a lot more fun than 481......

wow, you must do a lot of long freeway trips.
i usually get 20 mpg driving 70/30 hwy/city.

Recent trip from Florida to Ohio and back.

Best was 443 miles, 28.49 mpg on south bound trip back on I-75 through Tennessee-Georgia. For the whole trip it was 2529 miles/106.72 gallons = 23.7 mpg. About 200 miles of in town, bumper to bumper traffic and a 15 mile detour at 20 mph.

I had a bit overr 1800 miles when I started the trip and all in all I was impressed with the milage for a V8.

I just bought my 2011 4.6 so I'm still trying to get used to the car. I've only driven 500 miles so far. On the highway, I got 26.5 mpg on regular fuel. Should this improve as I put on a few more miles?

Also, has anyone figured out the mileage increase, if any, if using Premium Fuel instead? I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to pay the additional 25 cents/gallon will be justified. I'm not looking for better performance as I'm coming out of a 2006 Chevy Impala and it's already a night and day improvement.

Why??? Which sounds better the manually calculated number or the computer egenrated number?

In my case it's always 2-3 mpg higher than real life.

To your topic, I get similar error on my mileage calculations versus cars calculation. I typically get about 25-26 by the car but about 24-25 by calculations. Since the car does not really measure the amount of fuel used I don't think thats too bad, only about 3-4% off actually. I don't know as gospel truth on the Genesis but most cars know what the fuel injectors flow for a given time and thus calculate fuel usage based on the amount of time the injectors are on. Since there is a little variation injector to injector I guess that could be the reason behind the difference.

The error is due to an enthusiastic estimate based on the most recent integral, calculated by the computer.

Recent results:
Two weeks of daily commute = 19 mpg average.
300 mi round trip to Orlando for the day (I-75 and I-4) = 23 mpg.

Regular or premium gas doesn't seem to matter as much as how much alcohol is in the gas.

Agreed. Ethanol in fuel feels like a huge scam. I wish I could find non-ethanol gas stations near Austin.

Just finished (2 weeks ago) making a road trip from Central Texas to Charlotte North Carolina and back. First long trip in my "new to me" 2011 Genesis V6. Averaged about 28mpg for the whole trip, and got just over 29 on some parts. Always about 1-2 mpg lower than the car's computer estimate.

90 minute commute at 65mph in a a 4.6 my best is 35.9 that's premium WITH octane boost
