New to Genesis - On the fence on getting one

I am in the Los Angeles area so I kinda know how it is around here on the pricing of the Genesis. I looked in my area for a CPO 2009 4.6 Genesis and most were around 28k in pricing with around 40k miles . I actually bought my car online using autotrader from a Hyundai dealership and they shipped it to me as well as part of the price of the vehicle. It was CPO with 54k miles for $22,000. The car I got had more miles but I thought it was a better deal compare to my local Hyundai dealers. I know its different because your looking for a 2011 3.8 but just trying to compare because we are in the same area. Just look online with autotrader.com or cars.com and you might be able to find a better deal and get the dealership to ship it to you. Although note, the process took me about 2 weeks in discussing price, shipping and all that. Also the fact it took a few days to ship the car. If you want a better deal, you will have to buy somewhere else because when I looked, California had some of the highest prices for the Genesis.

My 2 cents.

Previous cars were, in order: BMW, Audi, Infiniti, BMW.

All great cars, but so far I can't say that I would have a reason to go back.

Every car has it's quirks, and in my opinion the only one I see is the Genesis stereo is not up to world class status.

I don't the criticism posted above of the Lexicon 17 Speaker system is based solely on the quality of the sound (which is obviously outstanding when it works). But there are a quite a few usability issues, and outright defects that have occurred in alarming numbers, which overall makes it less than "world class."

I have a question. How in the world did you determine what stereo TexasTom was referring to and what his basis from criticism was??? Also, are the alarming numbers similar to the "Unnecessarily harsh ride" so many professional auto reviewers made reference to?

Maybe I was wrong and he does not have the 17-Speaker system. I am not sure why he would make that comment if he hasn't at least heard the 17-Speaker system, but maybe you are correct.

As to whether some professional auto reviewers said the 2012 R-Spec has an unnecessarily harsh ride, that is a fact, Jack. Not all of them, just a few of them (more than one). I never said all of them said that.

As to the alarming number of complaints about the Tech Package audio system (problems, not sound quality), I have been a member of this forum for a long time and there have been issues reported by members. You can use the search function of this forum to find the threads and posts.

According to those who posted on this forum, an "alarming" number of audio systems were replaced under warranty by the dealer ($3000 a pop if not under warranty). It is alarming IMO because once out of warranty (3 yrs or 36K miles for the audio system) the system would be very expensive to repair. According to member posts, some usability issues remained even after it was replaced (such as loosing song, mode, and surround settings after engine shut off, and system freezes).

I fully agree that when working properly the 17-Speaker system (and even 14-Speaker system), are among the best sounding OEM audio systems ever installed in a production car.

Yeah, Mark is right. There were a lot of issues with the Lexicon. I think Seattle Genesis had his head unit replaced within days of taking delivery of his R-spec. I haven't read many complaints recently and mine seems to be fine.

Out of the total number of Teck packages delivered in the past three years, who knows what percent is a member of this forum.

My bet is that it is a small percent of total deliveries that have joined the forum and of that small percent, some portion of the forum members have had problems with their Lexicon units. Alarming number-who knows. Do we know if it is within the acceptable mean failure rate? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Same with the issue of harsh ride and Dunlop tires. My wife does not complain. She thinks her Genesis is better than her old Lexus LS 430. I do not think any of us really know how many people are unhappy with the ride.

People join this forum either because they love the car, want to buy the car or have a problem and are looking for a solution.

I will admit to being on the fence about pulling the trigger on a new Genesis, but i will also say i would never get the coupe. i can pull off stylish in a sedan, all i'll get accused of in a coupe is mid life crisis.

I don't have a problem with the 2010 suspension, especially with new tires. I upgraded my early 2009 suspension to 2010 specs and put on some Michelin Destiny's and the ride is now fine (much better than before). Regarding the 2012 R-Spec, I was just quoting a few automotive reviewers (who were among those chosen by Hyundai to do a group test near Las Vegas when the 2012 models were first introduced). I think my quotes were accurate. Whether the reviewers were correct, that is debatable.

I have read just about every post about the Genesis sedan since I joined this forum three years ago, and if I were getting the Tech Package and keeping the car beyond 3 years, I would definitely spring for the 10-year extended warranty, mostly because of what I have read on this forum from other members and their experiences with the Tech Package audio system (and how much it costs to repair out of warranty). I am just repeating what others have posted--don't shoot the messenger.

The thread you linked contains 22 comments of which the majority relate to a slow computer. I've noticed with my R-Spec that you can't rush processes. Nothing serious.

Beyond that I believe that most Tech Package owners are very happy with their system, which is all that really matters, right??

I have been a member of this forum for 3 years, and there have been many discussions about the audio systems, both good and bad. Maybe you should read them all.

Overall, the sound is fantastic, but there are a few hiccups now and then, some more serious than others. People have a right to discuss those hiccups without being attacked.

Sorry guys but Mark 888 is correct about the NAV/audio issues. My sound stopped for 2 hours when the car was a week old. That was a one time event but it has me wondering if it will happen again. Will it happen after the warranty expires? I have the surround sound issue also that others have mentioned. There's lots of talk on here about about guys buying an extended warranty because of the electronics issues that are so well documented on this forum.

My last car was an Infiniti and I spent time on their forum. There was absolutely no talk about radio issues there.

Imho, the concensus opinion of posters here is that the Genesis is a great car. Sound quality on the Lexicon is rated excellent by nearly everybody here including myself. But there is genuine concern about the audio/electronics.

I like my car a lot. Genesis offers excellent value, very good hwy mileage, great ride, good looks. But I wouldn't recommend the car to a friend without warning them of these issues. There are far too many of us with these issues not to call this a widespread problem. It is certainly not an isolated problem.

2009 V8 with Tech (tech was optional in '09), no electronic glitches to speak of. "Surround" box stays checked at all times....I never have to go back and recheck it. In addition my Kicker sub highlights the great stereo even more since the factory sub is poor.

However, I'm aware of the problems with the electronics/Lexicon, and may consider purchasing an extended warranty in the Spring since my warranty ran out this month. We'll see.....So far, great experience.

I'm not sure which system you have, but the Tech package stereo is a lot better than the non-tech package stereo.

With the Tech package, you cannot stream Bluetooth Audio, so Caveat Emptor!
My Premium audio may lack 3 speakers and discrete surround, but it streams audio from my iPhern and has matrix surround. So there!

My base 3.8 stereo with 7 speakers (I think) sounds fine - similar to my MB with 12 speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound. I think the bigger space in the Genesis helps with the acoustics. From what I can tell (on line), the base stereo has the same 528w amp and same 6 primary speakers as the 14 & 17 speaker upgrade models, just fewer speakers, a different subwoffer and no surround sound. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The premium pkg 14 speaker audio has matrix surround.
