Problems with my 2012

Here's a document that I've been working on to give to service. I planned on waiting until my 90 day checkup, but due to the pinging problem I have an appointment for this Friday.

Genesis Problems

• Cruise Control “Set” indicator stopped illuminating.
• Auto windshield wipers mode does not work well at night (sometimes wipes) have to switch to low speed. Not sure if this is a limitation of the system or not, but the manual said nothing about using at night.
• At 1700 miles noticed engine made faint detonation noise (ping noise) during acceleration. I had 1/8 tank of gas so filled up with 93 octane. Got on the road and accelerated and ping noise was no longer present. Ran two tanks of 93 octane with no ping sound, so I tried another tank of 87 octane from Shell and within 15 miles the ping noise came back. I only put 5 gallons in the car, so I drove it to 1/8 full and then filled with 93 octane from Shell and the ping noise never went away. I’m now on my 2nd tank of 93 octane from Shell and the pinging is still present and more noticable, even my wife noticed it.
• Sometimes when I push the accelerator to perform high acceleration the car slowly goes, other times it is very responsive when pushing the acceleratory and plants you in the seat. This can be annoying; I push the accelerator and wonder how fast I’m going to go this time. Most of the time it gets up and goes with great acceleration, sometimes it slowly accelerates, so I push the pedal more and it never really takes off, but slowly goes and increases speed. Update: I have noticed that when it is slowly accelerating that it did not drop down to a lower gear.
• Rear wheels look like they are leaning in slightly. Check wheel alignment please.
• Rear passenger driver side seat belt was in the center seat position. I had to pull on center seat belt connector and move to the correct position, but could you look at it to see if it needs to be remounted under seat.
• Is there an update to the NAV Map, seems to be over 4 years old? Street that are 4 years old are not present on map.
• Any news on Bluetooth streaming?

I had the same issue with my rear driver's side seat belt. I just twisted it in the right position, problem solved. The kids been using the seat belts fine.

Except for the ping noise, I consider them very minor. Figured while it's in there to have them addressed. I don't think the wipers, NAV or Bluetooth will be fixed, but worth a try.

I'm not exactly sure about your wiper issue, but the system can determine the speed neccasary and adjust accordingly sometimes very fast, or if rain is letting up, the wipers will slow down.

There is an update for the NAV, but the newest version for the Genesis is from April of 2010, and I assume your 2012 would have this latest version. Are you having issues with the Bluetooth? You can stream music via bluetooth only in the touch screen versions of the NAV. The Genesis with the Tech package does not stream music via bluetooth.

The "pinging" is probably GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) noise. There are other threads on this subject.

If you ever need to (or want to) use higher octane than regular gas, I would use mid-grade. Premium is way too high octane for the V6, which is designed to run on regular (unlike the V8 which is designed to use regular or premium).

Rear wheels should be tilted in at top slightly. The Genesis does not use a live rear axle, it is independant. Same is true for BMW and Mercedes.

There is an update for the NAV, but the newest version for the Genesis is from April of 2010, and I assume your 2012 would have this latest version. Are you having issues with the Bluetooth? You can stream music via bluetooth only in the touch screen versions of the NAV. The Genesis with the Tech package does not stream music via bluetooth.

It's only rained while I was driving at night a couple of times, but the wipers would not activate with the windsheild totally covered to the point that I needed to manually activate them to see. After a couple of times manually activating, I just turned them on low speed.

Kind of figured the NAV was at the latest version. Pretty much the norm for all built in NAV systems to be behind. No problem.

The pinging/knocking is not at idle, but rather when stressing the engine, like during acceleration from a stop or going up a hill. Going along at a contant 80 mph, we hear no pinging/knocking noise from the engine, only during acceleration.

Since higher octane is not helping anymore with the pinging, I plan on using 87 octane for now on, which i perfer to do.

I hope the Set light an easy fix. If they have to take the dash apart, I hope they know what they're doing. You know, it like getting a scratch on the fender, you don't want to paint the whole fender because now you don't have factory paint on that fender.

Don't get me wrong, i love this car. Just like Cut-Throat said, questions about the operation. Getting to know a new car too I'm sure.

Would you mind telling what were the last three or four cars you have owned?

I agree that the "Pinging" is probably just the GDI injector noise. You can also hear this at idle outside the car and more noticable when the engine is cold. All perfectly normal.

While I agree there is no need for higher than Regular Grade gasoline, there is no harm done by using Premium (except to the wallet ) and the improved additive package in Premium gas may bestow some slight advantages in terms of injector & valve cleaning, but only if used regularly.

When I first heard the noise I'm hearing was while I was in the car with windows rolled up and driving, it stood out drastically. Noticeable difference from before and is now louder.

I was wondering if the noise I hear is the valve trian. It currently has original oil with 2900 miles. I have an oil change scheduled for this friday when I take it in. Changing the breakin oil might quiet it. If not and Hyundai says it's a normal sound then I might just try synthetic oil.

Question: If I switch to synthetic oil, can I change back to regular oil.

I think your 06 Infinity has a rear suspension similar to the Hyundai. Also, as to the Pinging it is a gasoline compatablity problem. The ECU in your Genny may need reprograming or it could be lower octane gas in your area. Next time you are 75 or so miles from home try some regular grade in that location.

Yes you can. Depending on whether you lease or buy, and how long you truly intend to keep the car, a 100% synthetic is usually a wise investment anyway.

You CAN do this. However, studies have shown that if an engine has the same oil in it from birth to death it live substantially longer than those who change oils frequently. I'm sure one change wouldn't hurt it, just don't go overboard. I have no idea why an engine would be this picky about oil heh
