If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The purpose of this thread is to show the difference between OEM and several different LED aftermarket bulbs in the glove box, trunk, license plate lights, and courtesy lights. I felt that the interior of the genesis had such great lighting and these areas were the only areas that were sorely lacking. I do also feel the footwell is sorely lacking as well but havent had the change to get to that yet. All bulbs were purchased at superbrightleds.com. So please check it out and let me know what you think!

GLOVE BOX LIGHTS

I only used one set of lights and felt that it fit perfectly with the interior lights.

Pic 1:

This picture is of the OEM light:

Here is what it looks like. $7.95ea:

TRUNK LIGHTS

Here I used the 37mm 6 high power LED festoon bulb in cool white. Extremely bright and matched the interior perfectly as well.

This picture has the oem bulbs in both lights:

This picture has the 6 high power LED on the left side and the OEM bulb on the right side:

This last picture has the 6 high power LED on both sides. Looks extremely bright in the picture but it looks perfect in person:

LICENSE PLATE LIGHTS

The license plate lights were a big difference as well. I tried two different lights here. One was a 6 LED festoon bulb and the other was a 6 high power LED festoon bulb. The results speak for themselves.

The first picture I am using once again the 37 mm 6 high power LED in cool white. The OEM bulb is on the left and the 6 high power LED is on the right:

This picture I am using the 6 high power LED on the right and a 6 LED light on the left side. The left side is NOT a high power LED thus the difference in output. The left one is quite a bit more blue in person but it was hard to capture on film:

The 6 LED festoon bulb 3910 -x6 in cool white (LT SIDE) $3.70ea:

COURTESY LIGHTS

This one is a bit more tricky and I still dont think I have found the perfect light for this application. I used several different bulbs and they all had some good and some bad. When I do find the perfect bulb I will update this post. This is what I have found so far:

In this first pic I am using a 1 high power LED pure white in the Left (driver's side) door and the OEM bulb is in the right door. The color match of the 1 LED is perfect unfortunately it is not much brighter than the OEM bulb.

Here is the 1 LED bulb in pure white $4.95ea:

wled-whp.jpg

This picture demonstrates how closely the 1 high power LED bulb above matches the interior lights:

This picture has the 1 high power LED in the left and a 12 LED bulb in the right. The 12 LED bulb is HUGE and took a bit of work to fit in there but it fits. It is much brighter than the 1 high power LED but it is also much more blue/purple which I dont like.

12 LED 921-x12 LED wedge base bulb cool white $5.95ea:

921-x12.jpg

This picture has a 6 LED cool white bulb in the left side and the 12 LED cool white bulb in the right side. The 12 is a bit brighter but not much and both are still too blue/purple.

This is the 6 LED bulb cool white WLED-x6LED $3.74ea:

This last picture I have the OEM bulb in the left side and the 6 LED cool white bulb in the right side:

I am still looking for a better light for the courtesy light as the 1 LED just isnt bright enough. If anyone has any recommendations let me know

Lots of great work Rich! From a lighting guy, Thanks!

I still suggest springing the $20 at PepBoys and trying the Pilot Universal and see what you think. I'll buy ity off you if you don't like it :).

Cool pictures! Always nice to see the before/after comparison.

Re. courtesy lights: Phil used the Pilot IP-078W 8-LED modules - see his albums at http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/album.php?albumid=61 (step-by-step glove box mod.) and http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/album.php?albumid=65 (courtesy lights, foot wells).

I did the glovebox mod. yesterday and I'm very pleased with the results. If Pep Boys had had more than quantity one off Pilot kit on the shelf, I'd have done the courtesy lights and foot wells! :D

(Ha - Phil and I were typing at the same time. I got distracted and didn't realize he'd already posted until after I clicked Submit. Oh well, you can never have too much info... :))

WOW, and I only live 20 min from the "Lighting Meister" :D

I am willing to try anything. I have about 20 different bulbs laying around that I tried and didnt work. There is a pepboys by me and I will stop in and check them out. If they match the interior lights perfectly that would be great. They definately seem much brighter than OEM in those pics. After that I will start looking at the footwell light. I dont want something as bright as the doors but I want the color to be the same.

good post! really helps to make some decisions when you see a picture!!

Ok! GREAT STUFF GS300! We may be adding this to our DIY forum when it gets here!

Now, where can I get the trunk FESTOONS for $14.95 or did I just miss it somewhere in your post's?

Thanks!

superbrightleds.com Everything I tried I got from them. Superfast shipping and they are high quality bulbs. On the trunk lights I had to "modify" the contacts to accept the larger 37mm bulb. Basically you just have to get some small needle nose pliers and bend the contacts out a bit so the 37mm bulb fits in there snugly, and I do mean snugly. The OEM is a 30mm I believe.

ok, i checked it out! COOL SITE!

I would assume you purchased the HIGH INTENSITY 6 LED festoon for $14.95...am I correct?

Have you tried any for the turn signals yet?

This is really good information and eliminates a lot of guesswork. Thanks for taking your time to put his together.

Great pictures Rich!! Very informative and the pictures of the actual fixtures really helps! Wow your just up the road! Did you go through Jenkins?

Pinggolf- yes I ordered the high intensity 6 LED bulb. If you notice the high intensity LEDs look like yellow dots. I have found that these are the ones that offer the whitest output and match the best with OEM.

blasterguam- thank you I appreciate it. It was a lot of work but worth it.

calvin- no I went to gettel hyundai in sarasota, next to the nissan dealership on beeridge. We went to Jenkins and test drove one and really enjoyed it and on a whim stopped at the one in sarasota on a saturday and my wife pulled the trigger on her genesis. She wasnt even planning on getting one but they had silver with black interior and the tech package and they had the KDM emblems and the KDM center caps already at no charge, although I am sure the charged us for it somehow. Not sure if we will have the service done at Jenkins or Gettel, but I have heard great things about both

thomaspf, based on the kelvin range of that bulb (8000-9500) it will be just too blue. The perfect kelvin range to match the OEM bulbs is around 5000-7000. Any lower than this # and its usually not bright enough but it will be white. Any higher than that and it looks too blue/purple.

Thanx for taking the time and effort to help each of us trying to "improve" our Genesis. I find lighting can be a most impactful mod as well as aesthetically pleasing. Kudos to you. Your info is most valuable.
