  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, after fighting with Hyundai for months I finally got my R Spec back (build date March 12) it was leaking 1-2 quarts a week and the transmission was acting crazy.

They installed a new short block engine and a new transmission.

What's the break in period? How careful and for how long should I drive like Grandma?

Break in is 600 miles. However, do not drive like Grandma during that time. You should try and maintain RPM between 2000-4000, and vary RPM when possible. Driving at low RPM during break-in can cause piston ring seating problems, and more oil consumption problems. So the main thing is to not exceed 4000 RPM, but otherwise drive briskly.

That make sense. Will do. Thanks.

Does anyone know what percentage of the engines manufactured before this problem was fixed, actually have the oil consumption problem? In almost 4000 miles I've seen no signs of oil consumption in mine but it was built early enough (March 7, 2012 build date, 5 days before Jon's) to possibly be subject to this issue. Does anyone know at what date they start using the piston rings that didn't cause this problem?

Not 100% sure, seems like by April they corrected. However, I will tell you this, I didn't seem to have a problem until 25,000 miles into it.....keep an eye on your oil and if you see you're losing oil, take it in and make them do a oil consumption test.

I"m still watching it and will check the oil again today. I purchased it at 44,880 miles and I"m almost at 48,000 miles now. I had the oil changes Wednesday of last week, and up until that point, I didn't see any evidence of oil consumption. I got back from a trip over the weekend that included about 10 hours of driving total so it will be interesting to see if there is any oil consumption.

The car had one owner before me, who had leased it for three years. According to the carfax report, the previous owner had the oil changes done on schedule but it doesn't prove or disprove there were any oil consumption issues.

Great news that you got them to replace the engine and transmission in your and certainly it should be problem free now.
