  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys I've started to hear a small clunk sound coming from my steering wheel. I can feel it in the steering wheel when I'm sitting stationary in the morning and I turn the wheel. It does not feel or sound like its coming from out side or the car. It sounds and feels like it's right in the steering column. I know the genesis 4.6 has some electric steering. I tried googling the problem but could not find anything. For some other Hyundais I read of this little rubber cuppler that goes inbetween the electric motor and the column. But I could not find anything about my specific car. I don't even know if the genesis uses the electric motor under the column. Has anyone come across this problem? My car is out of warranty now and only has less then 65000km. Any help would be great. The clunk sound is very quite I mostly just feel it. The car may have done this since day one and I never noticed it before, I can't be sure though. My wife drives the car more then me and she has never noticed it. It could be totally normal and something I just ever noticed it. I have to site there and spin the wheel quite a bit to make it do it.

Turning the steering wheel while the car is at rest puts a lot of strain on steering and suspension parts and is not good for either. Unless your steering or suspension is making unusual noises while being operated normally I would not give this too much thought. OTOH, if you remain concerned, take it to a local shop and have them put it on a lift then check out the steering and suspension. Might cost 30 minutes of their hourly rate but should put your mind at ease.

Thanks for the reply. I first time I noticed it was when I was backing out of my garage. When I back out I have to turn to the right almost immediately. The car is just barely moving when I start to turn. That's usually when I hear it.

AHA! If you are hearing a 'clunk' sound when switching from forward to backward motion (or vice versa) you have excessive play in the steering mechanism. You should take it into a shop and have them check it out. It could also be a suspension part that is worn instead of the steering itself.
