  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2009 Acura TL vs. 2009 Hyundai Genesis

I recently have the opportunity to see the 2009 Acura Tl in person and I was quite impress. It price almost exactly like the Genesis... What are your thoughts?

First off--I owned several Acuras before I got the Genesis (Legend, Vigor, TL, RL, MDX), and I think it's more appropriate to compare the Genesis to the RL than to the TL. The amenities and features seem more in line with one another on that level. I'd compare the TL to the Azera, most likely.

If there's anything I will miss, it's the first-class treatment I got from Acura's service department. I don't experience anything close to that when I deal with Hyundai. But I knew that going in, and I considered it a valid trade-off for a vehicle that I preferred.

And I have also found that almost without exception,my experience has been that recent Acuras have not maintained their value anywhere nearly as well as conventional wisdom leads one to expect.

Now granted the Gen has more hp and a little more bell and whistles. That really just fluff for me. I strongly considering the Acura Tl over the Hyundai Gen. 09 Tl design is growing on me and it looks better in person.
09 Tl has proven reliablity and huge resale value advantage. With better service such as free carwash and loaner car. And I more name prestigue. And more agressive stlying. (That is subjective...I know)

Hyundai GEn great car. More lux cabin. More hp. No brand image. No loaner car. Excellent waranty. Resale value stucks.

i guess you also know that the tl is completely american built including parts engine and transmission, all usa. its not a jap car. and resale is % lost off of what car costs new not numerical value.

I owned a TL and I think it's a piece of junk in the high end car market. I know others may disagree but that is my opinion. I just bought a Genesis 4.6 and find it superior in every way. Acura likes to portray themselves as a high end car company but they are from it. Actually I feel at best it's the car that Honda should be selling instead of the Accord. I think Honda does make sound cars (I own a Honda Pilot as well) but I think their styling and quality of materials needs to improve and that includes Acura as well.

Except you're ignoring the fact that the new TL has both more power, and more ameneties in loaded SH-AWD trim than the RL.

DP:  That may be why the Acura TL (which I chose not to purchase) is suffering...Its made in America! HA:p

:(Sad to say.

Im a Toyota guy myself. I have owned plenty. I made the mistake of buying a Chevy Silverado just to try out the "AMERICAN MADE" car and the only good thing about it was the 5.3L motor...It does not even compare to the quality of the Tundra...which is now being made in America. I hope that is not a bad thing.

ALL: this is just my opinion. I dont want to start any raving wars over where the car is built!!

^ Good, cause I was about to tell you how many problems the Tundra came out with :)

^I heard. I got my new issue of Consumer Reports Buying guide yesterday...EEKS! Cranks breaking, horrible suspension in the TRD....it has already started:(

Anywho, back to the TL and the Genesis...;)

I'm new to this board and like all of you, before you purchased your Genesis, I've been evaluating several vehicles. The Acura TL was always on the top of my list and I recently test drove 2008 TL w/ Nav.

Man, was I extremely disappointed. The acceleration and handling was good, but it was a lot smaller then I anticipated, plus the road noise and stiff suspension was prevalent. I sat in a 2009 TL and it was much more luxurious than the 2008. However, I'm not too impressed with the 2009 TL's grill.

The only thing right now that is enticing me toward the 2008 TL is the price. Right now folks are getting deals in the 27K - 28K range with 0.9% or 2.9% financing.

I have yet to test drive the Genesis and will probably try to test drive both the Genesis and the TL (again) on the same day to get a true comparison.

The more I read about the Genesis the more I'm interested. Is there any deals to be had on the Genesis? I'm interested on a V6 w/ Tech Pkg.

Well, I guess all I can say might be dissappointing to you . . . be prepared to spend a bit more money! Once you drive the Gen/tech, you'll be hooked . . . :D

My daughter just bought the v8 genesis w/ tech package. I drove it over the weekend and was there when she purchased the car. Yes I would miss the free loaner TL if you get there early or at worse TSX, but I would trade my 06 TL in a heart beat if I were looking to buy now for the Genesis.

acura needs to fire their whole design team and start over. Their whole lineup is terrible looking, and the TL is the worst of the bunch

I just could not get past the new Acura look from the front grill. It looks like a silly smile and shallow as it seems, that was a show stopper for me.

I posted earlier back in Dec after my daughter's purchase. I've had an opportunity now to go back and visit the Hyundai. The Genesis has held up well enough where Hyundai has not had to discount the car to move them. This will go a long way toward increasing the resale value of the Genesis. I haven't really seem that many on the road, but they really standout when you do see them.

The Acuras have had there issues with there 5 speed trannies. They have even had a recall. They have managed to keep it quiet by jumping on the repair and taking care of there customers.

We have been fortunate with our 2006 so far and hope it continues to perform.

My daughters car has continued to perform well

This is what happens when the automotive press goads manufacturers into developing a "distinctive" style. Hyundai fell into a similar trap concerning the suspension, which the automotive press will pan if too soft. But Hyundai just went a bit overboard, as obviously did Acura on its styling.

2009 Hyundai Genesis V6: Can it take down the Acura TL?
via Long-Term Road Tests on 8/25/09

I spent this past weekend with a loaded front-drive Acura TL with Tech package. Although it's more of a sport sedan, it matches nearly straight-up with our long-term Hyundai Genesis V6.
Our TL rang up at just $550 less than the Genesis' $40K MSRP.

How do they compare?

Wow, I know it's just a blog, by that post was filled with nothing but meaningless, superficial drivel. Not an insightful comparison in the least.

The most insightful comment was:
" Although the Genesis' styling is pleasing but derivative, the TL is fugly.
What is not clear is whether the front or rear styling is worse."
