  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2010 almost certainly will have suspension changes

Do the 2010 Coupes have the suspension mod's?

Im so glad I found this forum. I was all set to buy the Genesis in June when my Infinity g comes off lease. Now I will wait a few months for the 2010 model. Does any one know when the 2010's hit the dealer lots?

Mark,

From the description of the busy suspension characteristics, it may be nothing more than shocks or shock placement.

It's fortunate than Genesis uses multi link suspension, which has several parts that can easily be re-designed and retrofitted to existing cars. Changes can be made much more readily than on less sophisticated suspension types. I don't think Hyundai will risk blemishing the reputation they have built since the 2006 model year, and I am betting they will issue improvements to the 2009 model. I'm just taking an educated guess, and I may be off, but I don't think so.

The coupe has a different suspension setup, which I assume is stiffer than the Sedan. The discussion about the sedan suspension does not apply to the coupe.

I assuming that it will be in Sept/Oct as usual when there are no major changes from the previous year. But I don't know for sure.

The Genesis sedan has a spring/shock assembly. I suspect that no major changes to the suspension design will be made, nor are they necessary. Probably just some adjustment to the spring/shock rates. I suspect the culprit is the springs, but this is just my guess and I have heard nothing from Hyundai on the exact nature of the change.

This is why I love Hyundai. Another example of how closely Hyundai LISTENS to their customers.

Another example is the 2006 Sonata. People complained about the interior design, its quality, the ride being too soft and the front seat lacking enough cushion to support the thighs. Hyundai listened and made changes to ALL of that to the 2009 Sonata.

1. They completely reworked the interior design
2. Improved the quality of materials and feel of it.
3. The ride has been stiffened with tauter springs and shock.
4. The front seat's bottom cushion angle was increased 2 degrees to better support the thighs.

Hyundai does listen.

Mark888,
You need to press your High level Hyundai buddy to try and find out exactly what changes that they are making to the 2010 Genesis suspension since you said that they were pleased with the results. But even more importantly I hope you keep trying to find out from him if they will help all of us 2009 Genesis owners out?
It would seem that you have the best source of information reguarding the suspension issue's with the Genesis. Thanks big time!!!

The person I got the info from is not a buddy of mine, and I don't have continued access to him.

As I mentioned above, the question about 2009 owners was raised in a "group discussion" setting, but not answered (even though I raised the question 3 times, so I know he saw the question at least once). I can understand why that is the case, especially if they haven't decided yet. Another possibility is that it would create a perceived or actual liability on their part to change everyone's car, and the resultant legal, financial, regulatory, and marketing issues involved.

As someone else pointed out (or implied), changing the suspension would change the "specs" and could create problems for re-certification of EPA mileage ratings, crash test results, etc.

I can't really give you any more information than I have already because that is all I know.

Wait until you see the next Sonata, due in early 2010 (probably a 2011 model).

I heard it from the horse's mouth today: the 2010 Genesis will almost certainly have at least some minor suspension changes. The horse personally tested some of the proposed changes himself. I am assuming this is relatively minor tuning, but with noticeable improvement. No word on whether the changes can be retrofitted to 2009 model.
Great news! Thank you very much! It's really good to see Hyundai listening closely to their customers...

3 years seems like a long time in the league the Gen competes in.

I don't understand the enthusiasm in knowing there may be changes in 2010 model unless people who just bought a 09 would be buying a 2010. The main concern would be Hyundai's willingness to make changes to the 2009 model for free or minimal charge to the consumer.

Peorsonally I don't own one but am looking to purchase a new car in the next month or two. This car is/was/or still maybe on the list, but I am interested in knowing how this will turn out. I would hate to buy an 09 just to have issues later.

I agree. But if they don't fix it for 2010, there is not much of a chance that current owners can get any relief. It is pretty much assumed that any changes made in 2010 are likely to be minor, or at least easily adaptable to the current suspension design.

Also, I would encourage an extensive test drive of a 2009, because it is possible they already slip-streamed some suspension changes in the current model year. Look for the highest number serial number in the inventory (only the last numeric digits are important). You can also check the build date on the door jam of the driver's door.

Thank you for the advice! I'll make sure to check the date when the time comes:)

Not Sure if posted earlier:

Hyundai Genesis to get 8-speed automatic in 2011, Borrego may follow.

We’ve previously heard that the Hyundai Genesis sedan will get an 8-speed automatic transmission and now its confirmed. According to Lee Hyun-Soon, head of r&d for Hyundai and Kia, the 8-speed automatic will be offered in the Genesis sedan when it is refreshed in the 2011 model year.

Speaking to Automotive News at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, Lee said that the Korean automaker is developing the new transaxle in-house. He said that the Kia Borrego SUV may also get the 8-speed in the future.

“This new transmission is for our rear-drive vehicles,” Lee said. “It will improve fuel economy by almost 2 percent. It gives better acceleration” and better noise, vibration and handling performance.”

Hyundai’s Genesis and Kia’s Borrego both use a 6-speed automatic transmission that was also developed in-house. Lee said that Hyundai is aiming to develop all future transmission itself. The redesign Santa Fe, which will arrive later this year, will also get the new 6-speed automatic.

This is incorrect. The 2009 Genesis V6 uses an Aisan transmission, and the V8 uses one from ZF.

Modifying the suspension on sold vehicles can only happen if the manufacturer states there is something wrong in the original design.

To be clear there is nothing "wrong" with the suspension as it is now. Ride quality is subjective - a matter of personal preference. I may want a firmer ride, but I am sure if the suspension is tweaked it is only a matter of time before someone comes along and complains the ride was too stiff.

Sounds to me like the concept of continuous product improvement is alive and well at Hyundai and the 2010 model year will improve on an already fine automobile.

Modification of the suspension to the 2010 specs could be made available to 2009 vehicles on an optional basis. How much (if anything) they would charge for that is a separate question.

Hyundai has made changes to other things in the car where there was nothing "wrong," such as providing speaker covers in the trunk below the rear deck retroactively for sold vehicles.

Bottom line is that Hyundai can do anything they want to do, so long as it complies with any regulatory or certification issues.

This is true, at least for me. When I bought my car at the end of January, I noticed that the cover was not in my truck for my V6 Tech. I had read through one of the threads that mentioned the cover was included with the V8 Tech. So if figured I had nothing to lose but ask for the part reimbursement which I ordered the same day I bought the car. I called the Genesis Team and they were fine with my explanation that I was "expecting this part" in my car especially since I had a built date in November. I am now waiting for the check to arrive in the mail. So it is possible that Hyundai will accommodate current owners on the suspension. But to what degree will be the question. I personally don't have a ride issue but do not live in rough road conditions (South Florida).
