2010 Genesis 2.0T R-Spec Build Thread

We’ve come to the realization that more and more Hyundai Genesis 2.0 T owners now have great expectations when it comes to upgrading the performance of their cars now that the DynoJet CMD is available as an effective tuning program. Just a few weeks ago, AMS Performance received a call from one such owner named Nica with a final goal of around 400whp on her brand new 2010 Hyundai Genesis 2.0T R Spec. This is quite an impressive goal to say the least . . . but as usual, a goal we’re extremely eager to work with!

Nica is definitely no stranger to turbo-charged vehicles having owned a Subaru STI prior to her Genesis. Although she enjoyed driving and customizing her STI but was in search of something unique and different unto which she came across the Genesis 2.0T. Already knowing that the Genesis 2.0T Track package had been out for roughly a year, Nica did some research and decided to wait for the R-Spec – foregoing all the plush bells and whistles of the Track package while retaining all the raw hardware needed to create one powerful, well-rounded street tuner.

AMS took delivery of her Genesis R Spec late last week. Based on her budget, the initial goal we have set this time around will produce roughly 300whp. Further down the road, Nica plans to upgrade to even larger injectors, a larger turbo, as well as upgraded pistons and connecting rods. Below is the current mods list for her build. Nica’s Genesis build began yesterday after lunch with the Spec Stage II clutch installation. Our head technician at AMS, Ivan, was able to quickly remove the exhaust, driveshaft, and transmission. In order to install the clutch as noted in the instructions, the flywheel required some careful machining in order to properly seat the two pieces together. By day’s end, the clutch was installed.

Today, the transmission was reinstalled. Work began on the installation of the AMS Genesis Race Front Mount Intercooler. Check back tomorrow afternoon to see more detailed pics and information on this installation process.

After the transmission was reinstalled Tuesday morning, Ivan began work on installing the front mount intercooler. This is our very own AMS Performance Hyundai Genesis Race Front Mount Intercooler that provides additional cooling for more heavily modified Genesis 2.0T vehicles (those using significantly larger than stock turbos and injectors). Although the standard core would have been sufficient in this current build, the larger design of this intercooler was ideal in support of Nica’s future plans for her Genesis.

One nice feature of both intercooler designs we offer is that they use cast aluminum end tanks to allow for a smooth transition from pipe to pipe when compared to traditional sheet metal end tank designs.

The installation began with the removal of the front bumper/fascia and bumper beam. Since our larger intercooler is being installed in this project, the front bumper beam would not be going back onto the vehicle. In its place we will be installing an AMS Replacement Crash Bar Beam (will be installed later).

After the filing off of two small useless plastic nubs (very minimal as illustrated in a few of the pictures below), the intercooler was able to fit flush up against the radiator support and mount securely with our supplied bracket.

We apologize for the lack of photos of the build, but we hope this will be welcome news to the Genesis Coupe 2.0T community.
With Nica’s approval, we decided to take a different approach with the upgrade of her Genesis turbo system. Upon further review, we decided to go all the way with a full turbo kit since it would only help Nica reach her final horsepower goal of 400+whp anyway. This convinced us to revisit a plan that we had to co-engineer a Genesis turbo kit with our good friends at CP-E.
To help everyone better understand the situation, CP-E and AMS had plans to develop a turbo kit for the Genesis which was placed on hold due to a lack of a tuning solution at the time. Some of you may remember the 3D CAD print of a tubular header design for the coupe. Well, it was sent out to CP-E a few months ago to aid in the development of their manifold design. No compelling discussion took place since then to drive the project forward, but upon viewing this thread, the guys at CP-E contacted us with news that their prototype manifold was complete and that they would be able to ship it to us immediately for installation on Nica’s Genesis. This conversation with CP-E got the wheels turning and the AMS/CP-E joint venture on the Genesis Turbo Kit was back in full swing once again!

The plan for Nica’s car now is to employ a smaller variation of our 750R turbo along with CP-E’s fabricated prototype manifold. Once the full extent of this prototype turbo kit is determined, the kit will be available (with a tubular cast manifold for added reliability and performance) to the public as the AMS Performance/CP-E Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Cast V-Band Turbo Kit. The build continues on throughout the week. Please check back for more updates!

The last time we left off, we were waiting for the prototype header to arrive from CP-E. After a slight delay in shipping, the piece was finally received and installed on the Genesis Thursday of last week. There are some mild adjustments that Ivan will need to make but our build is starting to show some true progress!

Prior to the arrival of the header, Ivan took the time to install an upgraded fuel system in order to compensate for the added boost pressure that would be produced by the larger turbo. At the fuel sending unit, Ivan installed the AMS factory fuel pressure delete kit. This directs all the fuel to the fuel rail while still maintaining the functionality of the factory saddle / siphon system. Fuel is then directed to the Fuel Lab fuel pressure regulator by way of the AMS Genesis fuel rail fitting. With a vacuum line hooked up to the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel system is changed from “static” pressure to “boost compensation”. This will ensure that we have enough fuel for the higher boost levels we intend to run. A return line was then run from the fuel pressure regulator back to the fuel sending unit. Deatchwerks 750cc injectors round out the installation of the upgraded fuel system.

In addition, Ivan was also able to install the beginnings of a downpipe started by CP-E and is continuing his work on the AMS intercooler piping. We’ll have pictures of this and more once the finished piping returns from fabrication and is fitted onto the Genesis.

In the previous post, Ivan had finished work on the exhaust header and fuel system. With the header and turbo properly aligned, the compressor housing was removed. This was done so that it could be modified to connect to the intercooler piping.

Once again, the production piece will be available as a solid cast stainless steel unit and will be modeled off this tubular prototype header supplied by CP-E.

With this turbo kit, a conical K&N filter and 4 inch intake piping will take the place of the stock air-box yet still retain the stock ram-air style feed.

A TiAL BOV will connect to the intercooler piping via a v-band flange and connector.

This kit will come standard with a 38mm TiAL wastegate which will also be secured using a v-band connection.

This kit will incorporate a full v-band connection system in its design. Turbo inlet and outlet as well as wastegate inlet and outlet.

All adjustments to the intercooler piping and intake piping have been completed and have been sent off for powder-coating. When these aluminum pieces come back, they will have an extremely durable black finish. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as the build continues.
 
Please excuse for the lack of updates. We were short-handed in our marketing/media department as they were in Texas for the Texas Mile Event. Now on to the updates!

Now with the motor back in the car we can finish up the ic piping and exhaust work. Nica's car will be running CP-E's cat back system.
