Hello Everyone,

Apologies for the long write up. I really hope someone can provide some helpful feedback.
I recently had an issue with my 2011 4.6 V8 sedan where the vehicle wouldn't start. All lights on dash and everything else would come on, but no start or even crank.
I tried jump starting and realized that the battery wasn't the problem and that it was most likely the Starter.
Because vehicle wasn't at home, I had it towed to the dealership which was just a couple minutes away (really didn't want to but unfortunately that was the best option at the time).
They confirmed a day later that it was the Starter. They wanted $800+ for the part alone. I got the part # from them and ordered my own replacement online for about $180.
Their labor charge was about $200 to install my supplied part, so I opted to just have them install and save myself the trouble of having the car towed home and replacing myself because it seemed like the location was a bit tricky to get to. Definitely should have been a doable job, but the math added up to me saving some time and effort by having them install.
They called me after completing the job and said that the car started up...BUT "intermittently".
They said it started up several times but had a few instances where it wouldn't. They said they wanted to check other components to make sure there wasn't some other issue. Of course, I get a call back from them saying that the ECU needs to be replaced, at a cost of $2,800 for the part alone.
According to them (dealership), the fault with the ECU is likely what burned out the old Starter. I am extremely skeptical about there actually being anything wrong with the ECU at all and was hoping I might get some helpful feedback from the community.
Has anyone with a similar vehicle had any problems or issues with the car's ECU? Has anyone had to have their ECU replaced or repaired? Has anyone had to have their Starter replaced because of an ECU failure?
My Genesis is 11 years old, and although it only has 49k miles on it, I wasn't shocked or surprised that the Starter gave out and needed replacing, based purely on age.
What I don't want to do is replace something that doesn't need to be replaced in the first place.
I'm relatively handy and do most work on my vehicles myself, with the exception of certain things that require hooking up to computer and/programming.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If you're willing to go for a 2nd opionion and pay another few hundred dollars for a tow and diagnostic fee then call around to some local independent mechanics and ask if they have experience troubleshooting engines on the 1st generation Genesis sedan and if they have a Hyundai GDS compatible scan tool. They'll need it to do a proper diagnosis.

Thanks for the feedback.
I called a couple shops and so far no luck. Will keep checking.
If I can source the part (ECU), dealership is about $90 to program.

I am experiencing a similar issue. Car will start momentarily and then die. Had it towed to the dealership. They said bad PDM...used only.... no luck..... Then they said bad IDM....used only.... no luck. Then they said ECM, IDM and PDM all have to be replaced..... but Hyundai no longer has them available. Only option is get used ECM, IDM and PDM from the same 4.6 car. Anybody ever hear of this?

Hello,

Yes, I purchased a used ECU/ECM for my 2011 Genesis 4.6 on Ebay. Brand new ones were available on several different sites for about $1,500 and up, however I was looking for a more affordable option.

The used one I purchased from Ebay was only $199. It said that it was salvaged from a wrecked vehicle, but specs showed that it would work with 2009-2011 4.6 V8 Genesis models. The part number was just one number off from what the dealership gave me, but after comparing pictures as thoroughly as I could, I was able to conclude that it would be compatible with my vehicle.

Once it arrived, I had the dealership install and program it to my vehicle. They said that that needed to be done in order for it to work properly with my car. I'm not sure how true that is or not, but bottom line is that my car now starts right up, as it should, and seems to be running normal again.

It has been about 2 weeks since the replacement was done and thus far I have not had any issues (fingers crossed).

I am not sure about the IDM and PDM, but if you get the part numbers from the dealership, I'm sure you will be able to find replacement parts, just like I was able to with the ECU.

In the event that you are in need of a replacement ECU/ECM ( they go by either name), the part number I was given by the dealership is 39110-3F273.

The part I purchased from Ebay was part number 39110-3F272. From the little research I had done, it seems like part numbers 3F270, 271, 272, 273 and possibly 274 are all compatible and interchangeable.

Side note, after the dealership mentioned that the ECU needed to be replaced on my vehicle, I did begin to recall several times in the prior months when the car would have a start-up issue. Nothing that caused me any concern at the time, but after learning of the computer problem, those instances started to make more sense.

Hope this feedback is helpful!

So you replaced your ecu with a used one and they were able to program it and thus far you’ve had no issues? The dealership told me it can only be replaced with a brand new one only

Yes, that is correct. I replaced the original ECU in my car with a used ECU that I purchased on Ebay. I just made sure I matched the part number (in my case it was one number off, but still worked).
The dealership had to program it to my car (still not sure if that was entirely needed or not), but had them do it anyway. They charged me $90 for the programming.
Based on my experience, what the dealership is telling you is not true. They may not know it can be reprogrammed, they may not know how to reprogram it, or the most likely case is that they want more money from you by having you pay for a brand new part from them at an outrageous price.
If you want to buy a new ECU, you can search the part number I provided in previous comment above. You'll be able to find brand new from several different sites. Prices range from about $1,500 and up. Probably cheaper than dealership wants to charge you though.
Otherwise, a USED ECU will work. Has been about 3 weeks and my car hasn't had any issues thus far.

That’s awesome that a used one worked because they made sure they told me only a new one will work and that a used one would not . I’ve also heard from other people on a different Genesis forum that a used one would not work because of the pin associated with vin number they said the key immobilizer is programmed to the computer and if you use a used one that it will mess up your vehicle, but I know now that it is possible to purchase a used one and that it will work. Did the dealership reprogram your ecu or some local shop? Did you make appointment to have ecu reprogrammed or ask them to update ecu?

The dealership programmed the ECU for me.
My vehicle had been there because of the Starter replacement issue (was actually sitting at the dealership for about 2 weeks while I waited for parts to arrive).
After supplying a new Starter, the car still would not start, which is when they told me that the ECU also needed to be replaced. Once I supplied the used ECU, they installed it and said it would need to be programed to my specific vehicle's VIN so the car would run and operate normally.
It was ready to pick up the following day and it starts right up and runs like normal thus far.

Okay got it and they didn’t try and tell you there not going to do it or couldn’t do it because it’s a used part? and this was a Hyundai dealership I’m assuming? Did they ask you whether the part was new or use? Also would happen to know the seller profile name on eBay ?

The work was done at the local Hyundai dealership in my area.

I informed them that I purchased the part online. I don't recall if they asked me about its condition, whether it was new or used and I do not believe that I specified to them either. I just brought in the part, told them that it matched the part number that they gave me, and they installed & programmed it.

Sorry, I don't recall the seller I purchased from. If you search the part number on Ebay, you should have a few sellers pop up. Because they are used parts, each seller normally only has 1 or 2 available.

39110-3F272 is the part number I purchased.

Hope this helps and I hope you get your car up and running good again!

Thank you so much for all of the information I really appreciate it it’s just some people we’re saying that you couldn’t use a used ecu because of the pin associated with your cars vin number to start the car so I was only looking for a new ecu, glad I kept looking on different forums and came across this post and I pray that a used ecu will work for my car as well mine is 09 4.6 by the way and please keep me informed if there is any future issues. are you on any social platforms ? if so I would like to send friend request to keep in touch my name sudan.

Hello I’m having this same issue my ECU burned. Did this work for you buying the used one and getting it programmed too?
