  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I brought the 2011 Genesis 3.8L sedan from 3rd party. It ran fine for 1 year 1 month. All of a sudden I heard loud noice from engine. Towed to dealership. They told there is a issue with engine long block. Need to replace the engine which cost about 18k. My car is on out of warranty. Don't know what to do now. Guys please suggest

I would try and find a used engine at a junkyard (there are online sites for these). I am pretty sure you can use a 2010 engine.

Wow, first of all 18k is an outrageous price for that engine. I just checked online and you can get a new OEM v6 from a Hyundai dealer for $2,800 for a short block or $6,800 for a complete engine. Even full retail for the complete engine is $9k, HALF of what you are being quoted.

I agree with Mark cheapest option is a used engine, figure probably $3-4K installed. I would find a decent independent shop to do the swap.

I would also try to understand what the diagnosis is and if you really need a whole new motor. Blown lambda v6s are somewhat rare from what I have seen.

Here are some prices for the engine from an online Hyundai dealer https://hyundaipartsdepartment.com Note that the shipping cost on engine is likely to be several hundred dollars or more. This dealer is located in San Jose CA. There are some other online parts dealers in FL and maybe other locations:

ENGINE / 127R13CA00 Genesis 3.8L
MSRP $9,379.16
Online $7,034.37

ENGINE / SHORT BLOCK 235R23CA00 Genesis 3.8L
MSRP $3,942.11
Online $2,956.58

Labor at a dealership is going to be expensive, especially since there are probably not many Hyundai techs have replaced an engine. I would guess that labor could be a couple of thousand dollars. Do the short block is obviously a lot cheaper, but more risky since there is more chance they screw it up.
