  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all, new here and was wondering if anyone has any insight on my current issue. So I have a 2011 genesis 4.6 v8 with 106,000 miles and I’m currently having oil consumption issues. It seems to be going through at least one quart of oil every 800-1000 miles. I’ve checked every forum and couldn’t find anything regarding oil consumption in the 4.6 models. I’ve had my mechanic check for leaks but he didn’t find any at all. So I was wondering if anyone in here can help me out or if you had a similar issue with your 4.6, what did you end up doing. If anyone has had oil consumption issues with their 4.6 please help me out and thank you.

Well, you're either leaking it or burning it, do you see smoke out the tail pipe?

You may have bad piston rings. I'd get a cylinder compression test and find a good mechanic that can help you. I'd fix it soon or you may trash other parts of the engine.

That would be considered normal oil consumption. Some manufacturers will tell you a quart in 750 miles on a new engine is normal. Given the 106,000 miles, you are doing OK.
If those miles were driven at 60 mph and 1500 rpm each piston would have gone up and down 159,000,000 times. It would probably wear a bit.

That may be normal by some standards, but not in my experience. None of the cars I've owned have consumed oil, not even a quart between oil changes. Counting wife and kid cars that's maybe 15? Okay well I do recall a '69 Lincoln Mark III with a 460 V8 that used a little oil, but not a quart every 1,000 miles.

Just saying it can probably be fixed, especially if it didn't do this before.

I've had a couple of high mileage cars that used that much oil. I won't count my '53 Merc flathead.

Yes, it can be fixed if a ring job is needed. You don't hear of that being done much on newer engines, but it was common many years ago. It would have to be in the $1500+ range. More if valve seals replaced. You can buy a lot of quarts of oil for that.

Oh, in warmer weather I would go a grade heavier in oil viscosity and that will help a little.

Oil consumption recall on my 2011 Acura TL. They had to replace both the pistons and rings last week. They said over 1000 miles per quart of oil was excessive. No other symptoms. No oil on garage floor or blue smoke out of the tailpipe.

Mines was doing the same thing. The dealer said that I needed the oil pan resealed. The casket need to be replaced.

No, when I took it to the dealer the dealer let me know. He said it is the oil pan need a new seal. He said wait until I do a new oil change to fix it.
