I purchased my car last December (brand new from a Maryland dealer). I've use it mainly to go back and forth to work, and took a couple of long trips, but even with that, I only put in 11k miles this year. A couple of weeks ago, I started the engine in my garage, and noticed a loud and unusual noise. I didn't know what to make of it, so I let it run for about 5 minutes, and nothing, the noise just continued.

I called Roadside assistance, and they sent a tow truck, and took my car to the nearest dealer. I called them to check the status of the car, and the advisor started asking me if I had done my services on time, and what-not---I had done not just one, but two services, was using synthetic oil, and a k&n filter. I thought I was taking care of my car better than I should've.

The dealer called me up and stated that it was just a small valve issue, but were going to replace the entire long block---small issue with a full engine replacement...so the car has been at the dealer for two weeks, and just got a call today that the engine just came in, and will be another week before I can get my car back. All the while, I've been driving in a Sonata, and now I am disheartened about the potential loss of value I am going to experience, having an engine replacement at 11K miles appear on my car fax report.

Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so, what was your experience, and did you attempt to contact Hyundai about it?

I had a similar problem in 1989 with my 1989 mazda 929 (top of the line car with all options). Car had only 6700 miles. Got the new engine and all was well for the years I had it. A new engine would not bother me regarding a carfax report. Serious accidents do. Sometimes a bad part slips through guality control. It happens on all mechanical equipment. On a new 1970 mercury I had a rocker arm fail at about 8000 miles, the casting had a bubble inside that could not be seen which caused it to fail.

You should be glad that they are replacing the engine for you.

I had a GM car with an aluminum engine block that blew a head gasket at 12,000 miles I had to pay for the replacement of the head gasket because they said the car was out of warranty. At 25,000 mile the engine was completely blown.

Even though GM knew there were problems with these engines, because they were not sleeved and they failed prematurely. GM would not do anything, because they said a car was out of warranty.

That's the last General Motors product I ever bought. Since then I have been buying Japanese, German and now a Jenny, which is made in South Korea.

Comparing the workmanship on the Hyundai to the General Motors products is like night and day and knowing that they will stand behind their product is even better

Unlike GM, who told the owners of 2007 and 2008 Chevys that had suspension problems that was the old company and you're on your own.

Be glad you own a Hyundai, because GM would be working every angle they could the blame the engine failure on you.

I can't relate Genesis to Genesis, but I did have a Grand Prix that blew a bearing in cylider #6 (blown engine) and the car only had 87,000 miles on it. Hyundai's warranty would still be in effect for another 13,000 miles!:) The rebuild cost $5,000 (DOHC) and then 3 months after I get my engine rebuilt my tranny blew! Another $2,100. Another component not warrantied 100,000 miles. And these prices are from 12 years ago, so you could see how that really hurts a highschool students pocket book as it did for mine. That was my last American car, since I had problems with everyone I owned. I love my Genesis, it's a real deep and passionate relationship.

Things are constantly changing. My wife's car is a Pontiac Torrent. At 60K miles GM just replaced her timing chains under warranty. Car came with a 5 year/100K mile powertrain warranty. So GM is getting better. Even back in '98 on an Olds Achieva I had it was way out of warranty, about 65k miles and blew a head gasket. GM recognized there was an issue on the engine (HO Quad 4) and covered half the repair bill. I would have preferred all but half want a long ways as it only came with a 3 yr/36K warranty at the time. I think if you look at any car brand you will find stories of lemons.

GM kept shutting down my preferred makes (Olds then Pontiac) so had to try something new and the Genesis was the best bang for the buck by a mile.

Sorry to hear about your experience with GM. Ford did that to me with a minivan we owned, which had the warranty expire by (get this) 153 miles...36,153 miles, blown head gasket, and I got the full bill ($1700 in 1999). I made such a stink that they gave me the option to get a full refund, or a $5000 down payment on a new car on top of my trade in.

There's a reason why I decided to go with this company now, and I'm only using their warranty program, just asking for similar stories on this vehicle so I can use as a baseline.

Thanks for the reply.

Scott,

I feel the same way about my car, and I've done some slight mods to it as well, so regardless I'll be glad to either keep my car or switch it for another Genesis.

BTW--offtopic--great job on your car, it looks fantastic. How did you get the 5.0 Rspec wheels?

This sounds like the misfire problem that many people have reported on the Tau V8 engine. It usually happens when the engine is shut off before being fully warming up, and then restarted. The valves seem to be in the wrong position when the engine is shut off when not fully warmed up.

Three suggestions:

  1. Use synthetic oil after engine is broken-in (wait until at least first scheduled oil change),
  2. Do not shut off the engine before it has warmed up, especially in cold weather or when car is parked on steep incline.
  3. If it happens again, shut off engine immediately and then try to restart again.

There are many other threads on this subject if you want to read them.

I purchased the R Spec wheels from an R Spec owner on this forum, then sold my V8 wheels to a member on the forum too.

Mark,

great advice, thank you. I got the car yesterday, but the job is not complete, as there is some strange driving dynamics going on. Also the temperature gauge is not active, so drove over 20 miles, and the engine was apparently frozen cold. The saga continues...roadside assistance is on its way this morning.

Correction, the engine does not need to be fully warmed up. It just needs to be out of "fast idle", which usually takes 20-30 seconds.

This will not be on Carfax report, About the only thing that shows up on them are claims paid for by a insurance company, And not all of them show up.

I can vouch for this. My insurance company just dropped $6,500 on a 10-yr old Passat in the last 3 months, and not a single penny showed up on the carfax report.

Long story short... car gone, before it DOES show up. ;)

Sorry to say we might be having the same issue. We're awaiting maintenance to get back to us after 4days. The starter was replaced and repair still does not have a repair diagnosis. Our 2011 Genesis Sedan 4.6 V8 with only 13000 miles was smoking with electrical fumes coming into the cabin was towed the nearest dealership. We had no signs before this happened until driving down the interstate in the middle of a trip, the engine light came on, rattling as if cards shuffling, then starting to "miss", got to a exit ramp, parked, and by then smoking and fuming. Going to be very concerned about all your same issues.

Carfax is worthless... my mazda was in two wrecks and none of them showed up when i purchased it. It wasnt tell 2 or 3 years later they showed up. My F150 didn't show a anything tell 5 years after the fact. its a good tool but i wouldn't put to much heart in it.

Im surprised the service tech didnt give you crap over using an oil filter not being OEM. I think you got lucky. They might not have read that idiotic TSB about aftermarket oil filters and engine failures.

And did I read this right? The dealer gave your car back not 100% completed? That is f'n insane. I wouldnt have accepted that.

Are you saying that your engine froze up a second time?

It would be illegal for them to do so.

I've been in these shoes. What was originally a $6,400 repair ended up costing me just under $23,000 said and done because the dealership refused to fix their work (they handed me the keys and said "oh, by the way, it's misfiring"....shouldn't have taken the keys back) and the next shop did too when their repair also went bad while it was still covered under their "warranty". In both of those cases they set the valve lash wrong.

Update on the repair...we have a new starter, engine ,catalytic converter and a new resinator. It was in the shop for 20 days. Any bets that this car is going to just fine later on down the road?
