If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if someone could explain the difference between the 2012 5.0 R-Sepc and Non R-Spec models.

I recently just got a great deal... or so I thought, on a never owned 2012 5.0 from a dealership. They told me it was an r-spec (19in alloy) etc. but it doesnt have the R-Spec on the back.

I didnt know they made non r-spec 5.0 in 2012 so I'm just wondering if I need to go raise hell over there. Is there any way for me to tell the difference? Also, any idea what that $$ difference would be between the two?

Thanks a TON!

According to Edmunds.com Hyundai offered V-8's of 4.6, 5.0 and a 5.0 R-spec version in 2012. Edmunds says:

The Genesis 4.6 includes Premium and Technology features as standard equipment but substitutes a wood-trimmed steering wheel for a leather-wrapped piece. The Genesis 5.0 is identically appointed, with the exception of the more powerful engine. The Genesis 5.0 R-Spec incorporates all Premium and Technology package features, plus 19-inch wheels and sport-tuned transmission, suspension and steering. High-performance summer tires are optional on the R-Spec.

The fourth character of the VIN code should tell you which model it is. 'G' = R-spec.

Dude you are the best! It is indeed an r-spec like they said but doesn't have the decal on the back. Any reason it wouldn't? It has the r-spec floor matts.

I can't speculate on why no R-spec badging. Perhaps the original owner didn't want it.

I did find a site that will decode parts of the Hyundai VIN. It is http://www.decodevin.org/vincheck

After you perform the original inquiry hit the "Get History Report" button under "specifics" and it will tell you if it is an R-spec. It is a free inquiry.

Thanks for all you help. According to that vin search. It is an r-spec like the dealer said, which makes me feel a whole lot better. I have no idea why it isn't on the back of the car as the car was in the dealer showroom and has never been owned.

Can you purchase these decals? I know you can get the genesis wing to replace the Hyundai on the back.

It was likely in an accident. How many miles on it?

You can buy (or get the dealer to buy) the R-Spec decal from their parts department. It may take awhile to get, but they can get it. Actually, the wing decals must be purchased in Korea and imported to the USA (usually by small companies that do that sort of thing), since they are not distributed to dealers by Hyundai Motor America.

There are about 5k miles on it. I'm going to go to the dealer tomorrow and see if they can get me the R-spec to put on the back. Where can I order one of the wing genesis pieces for the back? Anyone have a source?

Mine came without the badge on the lower right, rear corner, too. However, I think someone at the dealership stole it.
No matter. Dealer made sure I had one in a week.

Check Ebay.

Although they could be changed, I suppose, does your car have 19" wheels?

Would you mind sharing the specifics of the deal on that 2012? The price of the remaining pre-2015's will be an interesting trend to watch over the next several months.

I have a 2012 5.0 non r spec. Fourth character in vin is a G

Sure. I purchased my 2012 r-spec for about 33k. (Less thank 5k miles on it with no owner). The deal got better with the 2013 Lexus GS 350 F sport I got out of. Man did I take a hit on that. So far I like the r-spec just as much and it's a whole lot faster. There are a lot of things I liked about the f sport but considering I purchased it for 60K it doesn't even compare.

A buddy of kept hassling me about trying a genesis so I finally gave in. He traded in his infinity g37s coupe and couldn't be happier so I finally went over to "Hyundai" and was blown away. I had no idea Hyundai has such a sweet car. Especially when you consider the price! This has to be the best $ dollar for dollar car you can buy in its class. It had practically everything my F sport had for over 10k less.

OP can look at the steering wheel. If it is all leather, it is R-Spec. If it has wood-grain plastic on upper part, it is regular 5.0 version (non R-Spec).

My fourth character in the vin is also "g" but when I did a detail vin search like the above post said it came back as an r-spec. The dealer also said it was an r-spec, and it has r-spec floor matts and 19" rims so I'm inclined to believe them. The only thing it doesn't have is the r-spec on the back right like it should. I'm going over there tomorrow to make sure the fix that.

Yeah. It's all leather. Thanks for the help I'm finally convinced I got what I paid for.

For badges/decals/etc. go to eBay. Be SURE to check several listings as the prices vary quite a bit from one seller to another.

I've seen complete badge sets (wheels, steering wheel, trunk, hood, r-spec) go for under $100 and have seen the same setup for over $300.

My dealership (get a lot of this) charges $995 for the complete setup and calls it an "appearance" package!! haha...... what those dealerships won't do for another $1.

Glad you like your Genny, but, be prepared to have lots of little grimlins pop up from time to time. These cars are pretty notorious for having lots of little nagging issues. Also, keep check on your oil consumption. Some of the earlier 5.0 engines were using quart at the rate of ~ 1 qt/1000 miles...... and Hyundai claims that's "normal". NOT!!

yeah, i heard that about the oil consumption. crazy. It's something that I have never had to pay much attention to but I appreciate you letting me know about it (I received a private message about this too). It's good to know I need to keep an eye on it.

Wait-a minute! Wait-a-minute! My R-spec (with 4th character a G ) has a leather steering wheel with dark brown plastic wood grain on the top. And ,yes, it's an R-spec with 19's, mats, all the options, and sport tuned suspension.
Are you sure those are the criteria?
