  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I bought my 3.8 Sedan in August 2011, after about 3k miles the CEL came on. Took it in and they replaced a solenoid. It happened again after another 3k miles and they replaced the cannester. Friday it started acting a little funny and it came on again. Took it to the dealer again, and the same error code again. when it happened the second time the car just suddenly stopped and we had to have it towed into the dealer. I am worried about my family's safety. Anyone else out there haveing similar problems or did I get a lemon

There are lots of solenoids on the car... assuming though it's related to the canister then it sounds like the evaporative emission control system on your car is messed up. Basically that system is:
1: a charcoal canister that absorbs gas fumes from the fuel tank and engine as the gas tries to evaporate. Just like "odor eaters" that absorb foot odors in your shoes... This stuff keeps the gas fumes from escaping while the car is OFF/parked.

2: a solenoid that, when the engine is warmed up and running, opens to allow engine intake manifold vacuum to suck on the canister. This draws out the trapped gas fumes from the charcoal and burns them in the engine normally.

3: a series of pipes/hoses that connect the canister & solenoid together and to the fuel tank, engine, etc. Some of these are fairly large diameter hoses too.

4: seal around the edge of the gas cap. The gas cap is actually a spring loaded valve: when the gas is drawn from the fuel tank a vacuum builds up in the tank... once it reaches a certain level it overpowers the gas cap spring opening the valve in the cap - which lets outside air into the tank reducing the vacuum. Otherwise the tank would either collapse or the fuel pump would eventually be unable to draw any more gas out as it wouldn't be able to fight the big vacuum.

5: a whole lot of sensors for the computer to monitor the health of these parts for the CEL function.

A loose or busted hose in this system basically becomes an air leak into the engine and into the fuel tank. That prevents vacuum from forming in the tank; sensors watch for the vacuum and if it never builds up (and then releases when the gas cap valve pops open) that'll set the CEL light. If one of the larger hoses leaks though - like the ones at the canister or between it and the solenoid - that's a huge air leak into the engine. That can screw up the computer's ability to determine how much fuel to inject so the engine dies. Also, if the gas cap valve is stuck shut then the fuel pump will eventually be unable to work... if opening the gas cap leads to a huge air sucking sound (more so than you sometimes hear at the gas pumps - that's normal tank vacuum levels) then the cap is junk. If the engine will THEN restart - after opening the cap & eliminating the vacuum - then vacuum is definitely building up to levels that screw up the fuel pump. And it'll cause some of those fat hoses to collapse/flex more than they were designed to withstand which could lead to failures.

I don't recall other threads on this site though similar to yours; it's not a rampant problem. Your dealer techs need to find the root cause of the problem and quit replacing things based only on the computer CEL code. They need to check EVERY hose/connection in the evap system, leaks in the tank itself, bad gas cap, etc.

From the date of the first problem to today, how long has it been? If they are all related repairs within the same system, you may want to look into your state's lemon laws for new vehicle purchases. Some are 3 occurrences within a specified period, some are 4.

I was shocked to see the check engine light come on after 6 month in my 2012 Genesis. Took it to the dealer and they knew of the issue immediately; said there was a campaign notice (something like a recall I'm told) required a computer update. Dealer did it and a I was out of there within an hour. No issues since. Hope this helps.

Check engine light just came on. Unknown why. Made appointment with dealer this morning. Will update after dealer visit. 2012 3.8 genesis premium

I have the engin problems. 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 3.8

I had serious engin check light problems while driving that I had to stop the car and call for the roadside assistance and drop the car off at the dealership overnight. Very frustrated, waited 2 hours for the tow truck, and took me 3 hours to drop off the car.

The engin check light(orange) was blinking rapidly and the car was shaking really badly while moving. Scarly. Tow truck guy told me that one or two cylinder is not working properly.

I don't know, I have to wait and call the dealer for status tomorrow. My car is only 6400 miles, and had a engin check light on when it was only 3000 miles and dealer took care of the problem at that time. But I think this one is really bad, and I don't feel good since it's almost brand new car.

went to dealer 2 twice for the check engine light. 4/05/12 once was for just the light being on and the second time 04/12/12 the light came on and the car ran real rough as if it was going to turn off. both time the service guy at the dealer advised that they updated the software. but on the service ticket, it does NOT say anything about updating software.
a) 15538 did scan test p0300 history could not verify complaint
b) walk around multipoint inspection

i asked about the tsb but the service guy didnt know what i was talking about.

i gotta read the service ticket carefully and ask questions as to what they did.
because what they performed did not match what they said....

i bought the car at fairfax hyundai and got serviced there..

I have have had my CEL on now for about 2 months. Each time I took it in they would say it had something to do with the Emissions system and they had to clean out a system valve with compressed air. Third time they ordered a new valve. They cleared the CEL each time but it would come on again soon after. Good news is that it doesn't appear to affect driveability or mileage.

I had the same problem with the same results.

I had a new warning light/message lite come on today. It looks like a divided road with a speaker on it with an x on the speaker. Anyone know what this means?

Is this light on your dash, or your nav screen?
