  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am looking to buy a genesis and have found that the 2012 3.8 Genesis with Tech Package and the 2011 4.6 Genesis are going for roughly the same price. I would like to know which you think would be better deal pros or cons i know that the 2012 had the folding mirrors but is that the only pro towards it?

Without listing all the individual differences, I'll just say unless a couple miles per gallon is very important to you, then get the V8. There are features available on the V8 that you cannot get on the V6. A couple such items are the tilt/telescopic steering column. The V6 has some antiquated lever you pull/push down which only moves the wheel up or down a tad. The V8 has the electronic steering column that tilts and telescopes and the car will remember all your seat/mirror/steering column adjustments.

And plus the additional power of the V8 thrills me. The power specs on paper are small, but, the butt dyno tells me the V8 is superior. :)

You'll get lots of opinions pro and con, in the end test drive both and do lots of research outside of this forum and make up your own mind.

Oh, the 2012 will ride considerably smoother than the 2011 which may or may not matter to you. I don't find the pre-2012 to be too harsh, just not a floater.

The Tech Package on the V6 is the same as the Tech Package on the V8, and has all the same steering wheel and seat adjustments as the V8. You are thinking of the steering wheel adjustment on the Premium Package. Although the Tech Package is standard on the V8, Poster is apparently looking at a V6 with Tech Package.

Hyundai made a significant suspension change in 2012 to increase ride comfort. Personally, I would go for the 2012 V6, but would at least recommend a test drive.

Aside from the engine, the only other differences are the lighted door sills and chrome on the side trim (both on the V8). Personally, I would go with newer and lower mileage if cost is equal. But, if you really gotta have the power, then that is the only reason to jump back a year.

I chose the V6 because I wanted the slightly improved mileage and the V6 is significantly lighter. A lighter engine improves handling feel. Plus, I had done the really big engine thing a couple times prior to my Genesis, so I wanted to go in the other direction.

Both of these are easy owner installed upgrades if desired. Steering wheel is slightly different also (V8 has wood-grain plastic on top portion of wheel).

I own a 2010 V8. I have driven the 2012 V6 as loaner twice.
I really believe the 8 speed transmission in the 2012 is a not up to the rest of the car. I bought the 2010 beause the ZF 6 speed is a near perfect match to the 4.6. I don't see much to compare.. The 8 speed is to eek out 2 mpg
not because it enhances drivability. Many threads about the lack of downshifting with drivetrain lash to follow.. Buy the 2011: Refined port injection
not GDI and the ZF 6 speed;)

And I think transmission works even better after ECM update. It felt right away when I left dealership and was entering freeway.

V8 you won't be disappointed :)...although I like the more integrated exhaust on the 2012 and the headlight :)

I have a 2011 4.6 V8 with tech pkg. 116,000 miles and love this car. Still have original brake pads and the car drives and performs like new.

Wrong. The Premium package has the telescoping steering wheel and seat controls. The base model does not.

The OP only needs to test drive both cars. The '12 will be the clear winner.

What is the ECM update? Was there a TSB?

I believe you are confused. Shagnat correctly described the simplified motorized adjustments to the steering wheel of the Premium Package, and also the more sophisticated Tech Package version that includes memory for 2 drivers and auto-adjustments of the steering wheel to make it easier to enter/exit the car. What Shagnat failed to understand (and what I corrected) is that the Technology Package is also available on the V6, and it has the same steering wheel adjustments/memory as on the V8 Technology Package. This is relevant since the OP is looking at 2012 V6 with Tech Package vs a 2011 V8 (that has Tech Package as standard), and therefore the steering wheel (and seat) adjustment features are the same on both cars he is looking at.

For the Genesis Sedan model years in question, there are 3 different trim levels and steering wheel adjustments:
  • Base Trim - Manual up or down (no telescope).
  • Premium Package - Motorized up or down, and motorized telescoping
  • Technology Package - Motorized up or down, and motorized telescoping, with memory for 2 drivers, and steering wheel moves out of the way for easy entry and exit.
The V6 can have any of the 3 above trim levels, while the V8 only has the Tech Package (except for 2009 when Tech Package was optional on the V8).

Plus the 2012 had an outside update...looks newer and more refined (in my opinion)...

As far as I understand ECM = Electronic Control Module. Yes, there was TSB for my 2011 4.6. Call your dealer.

I have a 2012 V6 Premium and it has the memory for two drivers. Are the pkgs different for Canada?

Yes, there are many differences in Canada (and also KDM, Middle East, Russia version).

No, you are confused. The '12 Premium package contains those features. I have one.

Ernie is correct.

I have a 2011 premium and it has memory for 2. My steering wheel moves when I turn the car off and moves back into position when the car starts.
