If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all. Was thinking about doing a fluid change on the Genesis (ZF 8 Speed). Car just hit 100K (100,087 to be exact) and every now and then I've been getting some rough shifts the past couple months, usually into 3rd or into 5th. I've read up on ATF changes in trannys that haven't had regular fluid changes, and there are some real horror stories of transmissions failing after a fluid change. This is apparently caused by the strong detergents in new ATF breaking loose debris in the trans and that debris clogging valve bodies, passages, etc. I don't believe my trans has ever had a fluid change (I purchased at 31,000 - never had any issues so didn't think too much about it). I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar scenario with their ZF 8 speed where they had their only ATF drain/fill at 100,000 miles with no previous service. What were the results after? Any issues following new fluid? Really would appreciate any responses! Thanks!

On our 2011 4.6 ZF I had drain and refills done every 80k and the transmission was shifting like new at trade in with over 220k miles on it. No fluid is lifetime unless you define lifetime as 100k miles. Do the service asap and have pan/filter replaced at that time.

Thanks for the info. Yeah how I see it is Hyundai claims "lifetime" but warranty to 100k.. Seems like 100k is their definition of lifetime lol

The 8 speed transmission in your 2012 is not from ZF. It is made in house by Hyundai.

With the current mileage on your car, it is time to change the fluid.

the 4.6 in was matched to the zf transmission. The 5.0 got the new transmission from Hyundai.

Can anyone confirm the actual trans in the 2012 4.6? Looking at part numbers on Hyundai OEM parts it looks like a different transmission part (very different price) between 2011 and 2012. I've read multiple places that state 2012 uses ZF and multiple places that 2012 uses Hyundai trans. Can anyone confirm?

In the model year 2012 Hyundai Genesis started using the Hyundai transmission. You can get dealer to run VIN to find out which tranny you have.

Or there might be simpler way. On safe road, accelerate and cruise to more than 50mph, change the shifter to manual mode and glance at the dashboard to see if it reads the number 6 or 8...

ZF 6HP-26

No in 2012 there was an overlap where it had the Hyundai 8 speed and the old 4.6, I believe that they were all early 2012 models. 2009-2011 4.6 does have the ZF 6 speed, all models regardless of engine had the Hyundai 8 speed from 2012 on.

That’s the easiest way!

So confirming with the dealer using the VIN, it is the Hyundai 8-speed, not the ZF. There seems to be overlap on the 2012 model year where they used both the ZF AND the Hyundai 8-speed. ATF fluid from Hyundai was $15/qt, not bad.
