If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 Premium Intermittent Freezing

Quick update: The dealer received (ordered?) the wrong part, so no news on whether replacing the screen would help.

In the mean time, I've continued to wait at least four seconds between unlocking the car and pressing the start button. So far, so good: no frozen screen issues.

The only exception was one time when I had left the car unlocked with the stereo on (my wife was in the car). When I got back into the car, I pressed the start button right away and the screen froze. As I understand it, there's some question as to what prompts the system to start up: pressing the unlock button or pulling the door handle open. In this case, I didn't press the unlock button at all, and I hit start the start button almost immediately after opening the door. So either way, the system would not have had a chance to finish starting up.

The new audio unit has been installed, or rather, a new monitor. (Part number 96563-3M851, "monitor assy - a/v"). So far, so good, though it's only been a couple days.

As an aside, the technician scratched the leather of the steering wheel during the installation process. The dealership (Mirak in Arlington MA) offered to replace the steering wheel without any extra prompting from me. They do occasionally mess up (grease stains on the headliner a couple times), but I'm really pleased that they always fix their mistakes quickly and without a fuss.

I took my Genesus in on 1/9/2011 for the problem outlined above and as suspected they were unable to reset the frozen Nav system. The dealer was ordering a replacement to be received in one week. However, when I did not hear from them I contacted the service department only to be told that the place from which they ordered the part it so they would have to order it from another place. I am now begining my third week and still no part. I find it interesting that a certified dealer dosen't have a central location where he can finf a particular part. While I love my Genesus in general, it is disturbing that the problem with the Nav systems in these cars has been around for several years and Hyundai has not addressed it. I am skeptical that this vehicle is going to be all that was advertised. At this point I would hesitate to recomend Hyundai to anyone.

Dealers do not stock every part. Not even the importer (Hyundai Motor America) stocks every part, and all parts for the Genesis have to be imported from Korea.

Also, parts for the 2012 are probably even harder to come by. The online website where I have purchased Genesis parts previously (an authorized dealer who sells online) doesn't even have the 2012 part catalog online yet.

Sounds like the hard drive is/was bad. Your idea of disconnecting the battery is good; did you try that?

I have a 2011 46 with all the options. I had it happened to me a few time. The sound is lost, the radio is dead, the phone is dead. The only things that I can see is a visual response to buttons. This is very strange. I have to turn off the car and wait for about 15 min, and then all functions are back. This is a clear issue with the software, and we all should contact Genesis and request an upgrade. It occurs randomly. I warm the car in the morning and am very careful shifting, etc...

Any ideas??????????????

My 2011 4.6 screen has never frozen. However, when we start the car we do not put it in drive or reverse until after we push the DIS knob down to bring the screen up and buckle seat belts. I don't know if that has anything to do with a frozen screen or not. Also, I agree that a start and quick off and restart is bad on any cold engine. BTW our Mercedes E500 sometimes does freeze on the nav screen, but I think it has to do with the CD being cold or damp in high humidity. The Genny does not have a cd nav system, the Genny is a hard drive.

Hi,
I have 2011-4.6 with all options. Sometimes the audio stops and all functions associated with audio (phone-navi-radio ) are dead. I have to turn off the car and in about 15-30 min it is back.

Also sometimes while i warm up the car the display goes off and i hear hard drive restart, just like a PC. After that in a minute or so all functions are back.

Any ideas?
Any TSBs for the above

Is it so unusual for the computer in the car to reboot?

I didn't try it because that would require resetting all other codes which I don't have. Just today (after three weeks) the dealer replsced the Nav unit. Lets see how long this one functions properly.

i have had my 2012 genesis premium sedan for approx 5 months and i've had the blue screen of death Hyundai logo at least once a week. It seems to be happening more frequently in colder weather. I don't know what causes it but if you restart it. It works again.

Just happened to me again this morning :( It was raining before I got in.

The dealer finally received the correct nav system after having one that was not for this vehicle. So far so good. Everything seems to work ok. However so did the old one for the first 6000 miles.

I had same problem with screen freezing if I quickly put car into drive or reverse, but one solution I found by accident is waiting about 5 second, or until the blue genesis screen disappears then putting the car into drive or reverse. for about 2weeks no problems.

More than 3 weeks and no more freezing problems...just wait 5-10 sec before putting into gear.

So far so good. However, I do notice that the nav screen reacts differently from one time to the other. Some times I think it is going to freeze again then it comes alive. I am apprehensive each time I start up that it might freeze. It is also a pain to have to set and wate for everything to boot before getting on down the read. Otherwise I love the vechile.

I have found that If I let the car sing it's little Welcome song when I get in. Then wait a sec or 2 before starting..I seem to be good. As with any computer the system will collect and store info. That will cause a delay or change the time in which the system fully reboots each time. I have not found a correlation to the shifter as much as just letting everything get started and booted. 5-10 secs. I rushed the start button once when getting in and I had the frozen screen for about 25-30 secs....my 2 cents!!

Just happened to me this morning, started the car and switched into reverse way to quickly, and I knew it was coming. Very annoying, especially since shutting the car down right away and starting up does not fix it. I had to do it at an intersection a few minutes later and it fixed the issue. I agree with the others that waiting from the time you open the door to the time you start the engine seems to fix the issue. I try to unlock my car from the remote before geting into it, that way the system is already partially booted up. However, I tend to forget when the car is in my garage and I'm rushing to get to work. Too bad Hyundai doesn't seem to be looking into this issue. Of course when I told my dealer about it, he pretended that I am the only person with this issue and he has never heard of it. I don't want to simply replace the head unit to a refurbished one since I think it will have the same issues (and something else might get damaged during the process). Seems that software gets into some infinite loop if you do things to quickly and gets stuck. Is there anyway to reboot the system without shutting the car down?

2012 premium 3.8 here. Before reading this, my assumption was waiting for a few seconds before shifting out of park was the fix. It's not. It still happens on average once a week, and then goes away after a long enough time sitting off. A quick stop and start doesn't always fix it. Brought it to the dealer and got the "can't duplicate" response which is what I expected.

Same response at my dealer. That's when I pulled up this thread on the net (while at the dealer) and showed them its not just an isolated incident.
