If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2013 genisis v8

I second that! I will never go German again. Simply unreliable. Yes, most handle and drive well, but the price point and fact that you are often left dealing with costly repairs more than offsets the benefits. I wanted a BMW, before buying the Genesis. However after driving both...I felt the Genesis was the overall winner for many reasons. BMW gets you coming and going for half the features and less power. The Genesis is a luxury car. Period! It is quiet, smooth, powerful, and has great fit and finish. I just can't help but feel that some people are still hung up on the badge the car carries. My 2012 Hyundai Genesis V6 puts a smile on my face. Truth be told, the smile grows when I see others who have spent much more on cars with fancy badges, that IMO are much less. 92 out of 100 points is the score from previous Genesis owners on COnsumer Reports. That is the 2nd highets rating of any car reviewed..

I would personally call it a premium plus car... Sort of like Infiniti. I do own this car. The engine is great and it is a fantastic car for the price. But the ride just doesn't compare to BMW imho. I agree that german cars do require more maintenance, but all new BMWs come with free service for 3 years, and you can add 3 more years for $2K. I have an e46 M3 and having to perform maintenance more often is worth it, especially for how much fun that car has given me.

as performance car junkie...The M3 is an awesome car. Track ready right out of the box!

Let's not kid ourselves. We all care "somewhat" about badges, or else we wouldn't swap out the 'H' for the KDM badges that occasionally invoke comments about a Bentley.

I personally don't care what badge is on my car for "status" purposes. IMO the wings simply look better. If I did care I would have bought a BMW!

Equivalent BMW is $15-20,000 more than Genesis. If they were the same price, which would you have purchased?

I like the look of the wing badges WAY better. And I LOVE telling people it's a Hyundai. And I do it pretty much on a daily basis ;)

My neighbor saw it yesterday, and waved from a good 50 yards away, "I LOVE YOUR CAR! WHAT IS THAT?"

"IT'S A HYUNDAI!"

"IT LOOKS AWESOME!" (thumbs up)

:)

Great question...I have NEVER bought anything that is the popular or "Status Driven". I like what I like. I am a car junkie and would never be satisfied with a BMW that would always leave me worried from a reliability standpoint. I have always loved the styling of BMW's from afar, and have driven some. Maybe an M class would make me sway but I wasn't shopping for that with my 5 and 7 year old. I need space and I didn't wan't to sacrifice for much of anything. I was blown away by the Genesis. I am PROUD to drive it and truly think it is a near flawless design for what it's intentions are. It's not the sportiest car. I am coming from a 4 cyl. Turbo that I spent 8 years building and tuning. It was a 5 speed that handled well but had a rough ride.

FYI...I have been without my car for a week now. Had a small paint issue. I really miss it. I Would make this purchase 10 times over again given equal price-points with BMW. Everyone drives a BMW. I like the looks I get from those drivers...Jealousy:D:D:D

I you had a choice between a BMW 535 and Genesis V6 and both had the same options at same price, and you prefer the Genesis, then either you have been drinking or you are associated with Hyundai or its dealers, etc in some way either directly or indirectly.

If I had to pay...clearly the GENESIS. If you are paying...give me the M5 X drive thank you!

Okay this begs the following questions of those who say they'll never buy German again:
Did you buy new or did you buy used?
What year did you buy your German car?
If you bought used or CPO, how many miles were on the German car?

There a guy here complaining about a 2004 BMW. My Acura gave me a world of problems at 8 years old. And it was maintained like a kept woman.

Also, the sheer number of technological advances and the testing of new frontiers means that there will be a lower reliability rate. Ford experiences this with Mytouch.

I maintain that the 2012 Genesis is a really nice car but not a real luxury car.

Before you all start flaming me, keep in mind that there are new people coming to this forum for fair balanced reporting. I was new on this forum once and don't remember reading too many reality based assessments about this car. We don't have to drink the Kool-Aid to appreciate what we have.

The Germans are so far ahead in this space that the Japanese still haven't caught up in 30 years of trying. Why would I believe that the Koreans did it 1st try?

Make it a 550M and I might! But seriously, beyond a more balanced and controlled ride, what is BMW offering that is so far ahead of other car makers? SO, now get the price of a BMW 535 series with the same features. What is its cost? I'll tell you... Tru Market Value, $59,874. For that price I could have almost had His and Her Genesis'. I find German cars to look great, have good styling and what appears to be good fit and finish. But the reality is that BMW, Mercedes and the likes are giving less to to the consumer each year. They are selling their reputation, not better cars! Hyundai as a company have something to prove...and they are doing it! Also, tell me how many BMW and or MB's are recommended cars. The V6 Genesis with both the Tech and Premium package is a winner, scoring 92 out of 100 points from actual owners of the car. If others out there want to go out and spend their money on a real "Luxury car," by all means do so. I'm happy as can be!

This is a GREAT question. As a long time admirer of BMW and the 5 series in particular this would be a very hard decision for me. The advantage that the Hyundai has are warranty, reliability, repair costs and exclusivity. What I mean on that last point is that for me, I would rather have a Genesis that no one owns rather than a 5-series that is very popular and over-represented here in Southern California.

The 5 series has brand awareness, superb handling and performance, engineering, re-sale and heritage going for it.

I cannot actually say for certain what I would do if faced with this choice in the real world. I am definitely brand aware (to your earlier point - I did replace my Hyundai H with the KDM wing badge and it was not JUST for looks) but I also like having a car that is in the minority. And that is economical to maintain.

Cheers,
Newman

Let's not kid ourselves. We all care "somewhat" about badges, or else we wouldn't swap out the 'H' for the KDM badges that occasionally invoke comments about a Bentley.

A lot of that has to do w/ the fact that the Hyundai "swooshy H" logo is just awful and ruins the clean lines of the Genesis.

I'd much rather have the clean and simple Kia logo than the swooshy Hyundai logo (Hyundai needs to change that).

The 528i you quoted is lacking many a feature the Genesis has. Glashub...if you feel the BMW is such a value, you should buy one. I don't mean it in a bad way either. For my money I'm not buying an underpowered, heavy car, that gives me 17inch wheels,Low profile tires that bubble and are super expensive to replace, a weak sound system, no heated seats, no cooled drivers seat, Leatherette upholstery(haha), etc...! You would need to add some features and or packages to that Tru car price of $45,000 BMW 5 series 2012 528i. Which would bring the price up significantly. The 535 is a better comparison IMO. Maybe the 2012 is that much more refined?? Im not sure the answer to that. I know I bought a great car for a killer deal. I have had not an ounce of regret. Truly!

Let me clarify my motives. I'm not championing German cars. What I hope to do is to open this forum up for discussions which involve critique (not to be confused with complaints). I don’t find fanboy forums to be of any real service to anyone.

I posted the BMW specs so that we can see in detail what $45,000 one gets in a BMW. You point out the leatherette and the 4 cyl. Read reviews of that 4 cyl, twin turbo. Great engineering and great gas mileage too.

My point being that the Genesis (which I paid a lot of money for in cash) is a very nice car. But truth be told, the navigation system was antiquated in 2009. Audi was using Google maps and 3d. The other Genesis value adds are nice but rudimentary.

The star is the Tau engine.

The ride, handling, steering, and ride are not.

I come here and all anyone seems to want to go is have a circle jerk about how smart and renegade we all are for picking a Genesis.

Nice car but wouldn’t you have appreciated finding threads of dispassionate and reasoned discussions about the Genesis versus other cars when you first visited the forum.

I would’ve. It’s fun to discuss and look at something from other perspectives. I’m secure enough in my purchase to appreciate it without having to beat it to death by proclaiming that no other car can compare.

There are many threads based on complaints from transmission issues to headrests that don't stay down. However, because I like the car and am only 2000 miles deep I have to fold up and and say something I don't feel. In 2 years lets see how I feel. But really, "circle jerk" because you are not as satisfied. Don't be so sensitive!! This was a discussion about cars, right?

I know all about the twin turbo engines in the BMW family. I'm not impressed with 240 HP. Having had the chance to drive the 335 somewhat regularly I don't think I would be ok with less HP. The V6 twin turbo does a much better job. Also, I cant stand the draw on the motor when the A/C is running.

Whats wrong with getting a value and liking it? That is one of the main selling points of the car. It is a lot of car for a value. Have you driven a 2012 or any more recent edition of the Genesis? Its not a Maybach but hey....

Hey! I am satisfied. But I'm a car enthusiast. I live in SoCal. I have no complaints about the car but I bought it for what it is. Not for, "It's just like a BMW but cheaper and better." Let's talk about emerging techs. Did you read the techs that are available on the base 528? How cool would it be to have that on a Genesis.

But back to my point...the Genesis is a really nice car....it fits me nice. It's solid and dependable and has a few "luxury" like features. I'll keep a few years but it is what it is. Nobody made a bad decisoion when they bought a Genesis..not saying that but man don't you get excited when you see what the Germans are doing with tech/ride/handling/telematics?

2 freaking liters...what a monster!

This probably doesn't apply to many people but, when I buy a new car, I expect to own it for 15+ years and 150,000+ miles, and I choose very carefully. I would never choose a BMW or Mercedes as a result--------------the frequency and cost of repair is prohibitive.
