2013 Lexus GS

Its kind of funny from a car that copied the GS and every other luxury car for its style then added the Klingon grill. Too embarrassed to put the Hyundai badge on the front end. I think we should look in the mirror before throwing stones at other cars.

The GS now is being hailed as the best driving car in class with multiple firsts in the world or segment. It is selling past sales expectations and a huge hit.

FYI in 2006 when the LS was new it sold around 30,000 vehicles. The Equus all new in its best year sold 10% of that total, 3,000. The Equus has its niche compared to the heavyweights of the S-class, LS and 7 series.

Wouldn't be surprised Hyundai copied the Lexus face.

At first I was unimpressed with the front end picture of the GS 2013. However, in real life it looks very good - much better than the previous model.
Just drove the GS450h yesterday. Man, the inside is beautiful and so sophisticated; the non-glossy bamboo dash is quite classy and look/feel like real wood. Material quality is a big step above the Genesis (to be expected given an extra 20K). The electronics and the display are awesome. At low speed, I'm just not used to the hybrid engine quietness - kept thinking the thing has stalled. When you stomp on the pedal, the engine's growl is quite pronounced and the thing picks up speed fast; but I couldn't tell if it is any faster than the 4.6 V8 (probably not). Another thing that I am not used to is the regenerative braking system - it felt different than the regular brakes. At the end of the drive, with the smart key still inside the car, I got out and forgot to turn off the engine the dang thing is just too quiet.
This model is supposed to have 31 mpg combined city/Hwy. But if you selected Sport mode and heavy on the pedal, I suppose it could be in the low 20's. The Sport mode noticeably stiffened up the suspension.
Warning to Asian drivers, the speech recognition has trouble discerning differences in Vietnamese names
Overall, I was very impressed with the GS450h.

not sure if I asked you this before, but does your car have the dash rattle problem? My buddy has a 08 GS, and they can't solve the problem.

Uhh, where did the Genesis "copy" the GS?

Yes, the Genesis did borrow styling cues (primairly from BMW), but that is pretty standard practice for a new entrant in the luxury segment (Lexus, Infiniti, etc. all did this) since auto-makers breaking into the luxury segment want to give buyers something that is reassuring (something that doesn't rock the boat and looks out of place).

The new GS, however, is on its 4th gen, and yet it still borrows cues from BMW (and Holden and the Sonata of all things).

And Hyundai wasn't "embarrassed to put the Hyundai badge on the front end"; Hyundai let the public vote on 2 diff. grill designs (one w/ the Hyundai badge and one w/o) and the grill design w/o the badge won overwhelmingly.

The new GS has won some comparisons (not all) so it deserves kudos for being a much better driver than its previous iterations.

However, it is not the sales success that you make it out to be.

Sales of the news GS have already slipped to around the 2k/monthly mark for the past couple of months from the high of 2,600 - which is not that far off sales of the Genesis sedan (which is soon due for a replacement) based on a 50/50 split of Genesis sales (and the Genesis doesn't have available AWD like the GS).

The new GS is on a sales pace that is significantly lower than that of its less heralded previous version.

The Genesis is Hyundai's 1st attempt in this segment and it was developed primarily for the Korean market.

It took Toyota its 4th attempt at the GS to get something that finally competes against the Germans on the handling front (in part by staying on the smaller end of the segment).

We'll see what Hyundai can do w/ the 2G Genesis sedan which is being developed for the world market.

This is partly why some brands make the effort to make a separate marque, so kids and econo-car owners with clearly no clue don't end up at the same dealership. This makes absolutely no sense at all and is one of the worst things I've read in my life.

Uhm, Mercedes has long offered the "econobox" A and B Class in Europe (as well as the B Class in Canada) and Smart dealerships are adjoined to Mercedes dealerships where one can find a Smart being serviced next to an S Class.

The point is that Japanese can't compete against the Germans (esp. Mercedes and BMW) on pricing, but they still have the expense of marketing and supporting 2 separate dealer networks.

There's a reason why the top sellers for Lexus are its FWD Camry-platform based RX and ES and why the RWD GS and IS lag way behind Mercedes and BMW.

Same goes for Infiniti w/ the G and M (Nissan doesn't have the deep pockets that Toyota has which is why they have looked to cut costs w/ Infiniti - ranging from abandoning the Q flagship to using platforms and powerplants supplied by Mercedes going forward).

The front end styling is atrocious. I know Lexus is trying to shed it's sleepy image but this new face just looks too weird.

I have to agree with you. Same for the new ES 350. I have yet to see the ES 350 in person, but we may decide to lease something else when the present lease on our 2010 terminates in Feb. One reason why I keep monitoring this forum.

BTW - You asked someone else about the dash rattle of the GS car. We had a 2007 GS350 and never heard a rattle. I saw many people complaining about rattles in one of the Lexus forums, but I guess we lucked out!

In fact, both Lexus have been completely trouble-free.

@Yeh - I read somewhere that the new ES350 no longer shares chassis with Camry. Instead, it shares chassis with the larger Avalon, thereby gaining almost a couple of inches of badly needed back seat knee room, while keeping almost the same overall length.

Mine does....It used to just rattle in cold weather, Now year round....I'm done with lexus.... Have had it to the dealer 4 times over the last 5 years to correct rattles. Would keep the car rattle free for about 3 months. I've given up...My Genesis is nice and silent.

Previous poster could not have had a 2007 Lexus GS350 that was problem free. This vehicle had at least 3 re-calls. Fuel Lines, Brakes. Valve Springs (Where they had to tear the complete engine apart to replace the Valve Springs)....

My buddy in Baltimore is fed up with his GS460, the dash rattle used to be only during the winter but now it's surfaced intermittently and the dealer has opened up and replaced the dash 3 times. He's looking to get another car but wont buy a Hyundai. He wants a M37.

I am the previous poster. I had a recall for fuel line and the one for break pedal. No valve spring problem that I recall. I had completely forgotten about the recalls and simply did not considered them to be "trouble". Reason being, each and every time I was allowed to take home another car, just like mine, same year or newer. Got back to the dealer in a couple of days and everything was done.

People like us that go on internet forums to complain/brag about their cars are probably in the minority. With that said, we came to the Lexus GS350 from a BMW330. My wife liked the somewhat softer ride and lighter steering effort of the Lexus. I hated the light steering and breaks. The handling could not even approach the Bimmer and in fact, the only thing I liked of the GS350 was the smooth and powerful engine. Oh, the interior was nice. Both cars had auto tranny and the GM built tranny in the Bimmer was miles ahead in smoothness of the one in the Lexus...still, NO RATTLES!!!

BTW - The fuel line recall was necessitated by our great Congress mandating us to use the highly corrosive ethanol in our fuel. They had to change the type of metal being used. The break pedal thing was about the one stupid dealer in California using double carpet that blocked the complete ability to depress the break pedal. STILL NO RATTLES IN MY CARS.

Hyundai wasn't even on the radar screen before I bot it. All the cars I looked at had some issue (compromise). G37, hotrod nice car, back seat is kinda small. 328, iconic, they put the cupholders where? same as G37 kinda small? ES 350, you want how much for a Camry with lipstick? Hindsight is 20/20. At the time I got this car it was a bit of a risk. Since then both Hyundai and Kia have really raised their profile. I still really like this car. After a few electronic gremlins with the TPMS sensor and headunit, the car has been trouble free. We'll see how it fairs against Toyota's legendary reliability. I just sold a 17 year old Lexus LS400, not sure I would keep the Genny that long, but that's what I thought about the Lexus.

Thank you, Gambler... the boards have really gone downhill of late. For every informative post, there are ten negative/derogatory/off-topic ones.

Back to the topic at hand... the new GS isn't that bad... but I'm finding it hard to distinguish all the Infinitis, Nissans and Lexus sedans from each other these days!

I suppose the Genesis looks very similar to these cars though...

I think the Predator grill isn't as horrible as Acura, and the rest of the car looks fine.

I also think the original Genesis had a poor grill, it was so bland and generic. It was just better than the atrocity at Acura.
