  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey folks,

I'm a new member and just purchased a 2013 Genesis premium for my mom which we are picking up today. It is a great car and is in great shape. It is twilight blue pearl in colour with a cashmere interior.

The only issue with the car is that the interior has a light coloured wood trim which neither of us like but it wasn't a big enough problem to not buy the car. Ideally what I hope to do is replace the upper wood dash/door trim with black leather panels and replace the lower wood trim (around the gear selector and cd player) with the darker wood trim pieces.

Is this a fairly easy process assuming I can find the necessary parts? There is a wrecked 2011 Genesis near me that has the black leather dash which I can probably use as a parts car if the panels are in good condition and are interchangeable with the 2013. Hopefully the experts here can help me out.

Is that a Canadian car? I thought that in the USA Premium Package had the leather dash inserts? Maybe they changed it about 2012 or so, but I know early Genesis models in the USA with Premium Package had leather dash inserts, but in Canada it was the plastic that looks like wood.

Yes, it is a Canadian car. I'm not sure why they went with the wood trim instead of leather but I prefer the leather. Hopefully it is an easy change to make and relatively inexpensive if I can find a parts car or some used trim pieces online.

Oops. Just noticed the "Calgary" geologist.

Believe it or not, there are some old posts on this forum from Canadian owners with Technology Package and leather dash, that very seriously were looking for a way to replace the leather with the plastic wood. I think it had something to do with easier to clean in the winter or something.

However, if you stay with the plastic that looks like wood, be very careful cleaning or vacuuming it, because it scratches very easily. Even touching it with the plastic end of a vacuum wand can scratch it.

Finding a swap partner would be great. Do you know if the 2013 dash is the same as the earlier years or the 2014? Do the Premium and Tech vehicles have the same dash? I know the tech has a larger screen but I'm not sure if the dash around the screen trim piece is the same.

Don't mess with it!!! Other than some glare off the dashboard from the shiny wood, it looks beautiful. By the way, what you are referring to as black trim is likely dark brown, just like the interior of my car. Believe me, you don't want to start mixing black and brown trim pieces in your cashmere interior car. Stop by your dealer's parts dept. to confirm the various interior trim colors of the two cars you are thinking of marrying together.

I suspect that 2012, 2013 are the same (and maybe 2014). But 2009-2011 might be a little different due to 2012 being a minor refresh year, but not sure.

As you mentioned, the display on the Premium Package and Technology Package are different, but it looks like the cutout may be the same size.

When I said that other Canadians wanted to switch from leather to plastic/wood, I meant 4-6 years ago. Genesis first came out in 2009. I don't recall if they ever did it, but the posts should still be on this forum somewhere. My impression was that it is not a DIY job, and dash may need to be removed.

Looks like it's mainly just clipped in, but then those screws show up and make it look like the dash needs to come off or apart to get to them.

I too don't care for that plastic bit. It's too huge and shiny.

Can you remove just the top of the dashboard of a 2011 Hyundai Genesis sedan 3.8 ? Needs to be replaced !
