  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I know this has been covered for the 2012 engines, but has anyone experienced excessive oil usage in the 2014 R Spec? After an oil change (odo reading at 2014 miles) at my dealership, I used one quart in 495 miles. I filled it up to the full mark (thinking maybe they just did not fill it sufficiently) and now after about 500 miles it is down 1/2 quart. My odometer is at 3018 miles. Any thoughts? I cannot find any reference on the web to problems after the 2012 engines.

Hyundai reps have privately said they made changes to fix it, definitely before the 2014 model year. However, it the engine break-in did not go well and piston rings did not seat properly, then it can happen almost any engine.

Take it in, start an oil consumption test, currently doing this on mine.

No evidence of leaks of anything?

Thanks for the responses. No, I don't see any evidence of oil leakage plus I see no smoke coming from the exhaust - even if I gun it on acceleration. I'm wondering if maybe the oil filter was installed incorrectly. I think there could be accumulation captured in the bottom cover that I would not detect?

How many miles were on your car when you got it? Cars driven by managers, salesman and test drivers are surely not going to keep it under the recommended (not mandatory) 4000 rpms.

The car had 2200 miles when I purchased.

I agree. It could have been driven too low RPM, or too high RPM (both can cause the problem noticed). Don't ever believe that these cars are only driven by the dealer GM, that is the biggest lie in the business. They are used as demos. When someone demos an R-Spec, don't be surprised if they try and redline it during a test drive.

If you lost a 1/2 a quart you'd see it all underneath the car. That's quite a bit of oil.

I agree with others. Sounds like your car might have been beaten on pretty hard.

Do these cars carry on board tracking logs showing peak RPM along with corresponding mileage? If so, maybe he can take it to a different dealer than where he bought it and have them print out the graph.

I just returned from a Hyundai dealer in Ohio where I am visiting this week. They found no evidence of any oil leaks and their evaluation showed that the oil was only about 1/4 of a quart low (I thought it was 1/2 quart low after 500 miles). They topped it off so I will monitor this when I return to NY later this week. I do in fact find it difficult to read the dipstick so I normally insert the dipstick after cleaning, put it back in to get a reading, and lay the stick on a paper towel to get a more defined reading. This is after driving the car and letting it set for at least 15 minutes. Is there a better way to do this? I mean...after 30 years of car ownership, I would like to think I know how to read a dip stick...

They also stated that oil consumption may be higher for the first 5000 or so miles as the seals seat.
