  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 3.8 vs 5.0??

Interesting - I wonder if it was a pure cost, cost/benefit (i.e., did it really make much difference in ride/handling for the added cost/complexity), or reliability issue that made them drop the CDS. They featured it prominently in the 2015 launch/marketing materials, so curious as to the real reason they dropped it, making the 3.8 AWD the overall highest optioned model?

that is interesting. I would love be in the room when these decisions are being made.

The 3.8 liter V6 has 330 or so horsepower. It's not inadequate at all. I think some of the V8 guys think the V6 is actually a four cylinder. *I* am a V8 guy. I like big engines and fast cars. The V6 Genesis isn't fast and it isn't slow. The V8 is fast. Buy what you need.

No rear sun shade exists on Canadian model :)

thats sucks. the variable dampening and the hud is kinda what made the ultimate, the Ultimate.

maybe the costs were too high for those automatic shades. this just makes the current 2015 base tech package 5.0 even more desireable IMO, which has the auto shades and door shades.

The 3.8's still can be had with the power rear shade and manual side shades... seems strange to have dropped these only on the 5.0's?

the 3.8 is nice. no doubt. but the 5.0 is pretty overwhelming with power. there are a lot off 330 hp range players in the market, but not a lot of 400+ hp players in the price range of the 5.0.

No argument there - just odd to have dropped certain features only on the 5.0 for 2016. I'm guessing maybe because the 5.0 has not sold all that well so they consolidated to 1 variant (no options) and stripped features to bring the cost down?

you would have to compare the 5.0 to the lexus ls460, infiniti m56, audi a8, benz s class....its literally half the cost. thats like getting a benz s class with 40k to spend on gas. its all relative

Sure - but if it was selling well, I don't think they'd strip features/options. They actually added features to the 3.8's for 2016 (foglights).

If one gets a high quality tint job, the sun shades are not needed. Maybe they figured that V8 owners would be willing to pay for, and prefer, a tint job.

Somehow, I doubt that's it...

We have the side window shades in Canada but not the electronic rear window one.

Funny how they have all these different configs all over the place. Anybody looked at some of the crazy models in foreign countries? Saw one model with Navi screens in the back seats and the dial controls in the back seat center arm rest. Must be some kinda limo version.

Dropping these particular features from the V8 is weird, maybe they are looking to increase the Genesis/Equus gap? I can say with 100% certainty that I would not have bought a V8 without the CDS and sunshades. With two little ones the sunshades are crucial, hell even the Azera had them 8 or ten years ago.

The V8 build was simplified with the single Ultimate option and its role as the performance version then allowed them to trim some items. The CDS was probably not enough of a noticeable handling benefit to justify the additional cost and maybe weight. It was also never really promoted in marketing nor its actual specifics outlined why it is an asset.

As for me, I am glad I got in on the 2015 with these changes and the relatively minor updates (LED DRL). The additional warranty is less of an issue with a lease.

While the 5.0 is no doubt the better performer with respect to sheer power, it's not the better performer with respect to handling. Hyundai touted the HTRAC AWD as a key part of their focus on performance in their promotional videos at the 2015 launch in addition to the CDS. In fact, they don't even mention the V8 :

So, if the V8 is the performance version, then it's odd to drop a feature they said made the car "optimized for superior handling and control"?

The option of a 420 HP V8 was a sign this was the "performance" version. I agree however, the CDC was poorly marketed and did not apparently lend enough to the role the V8 was supposed to fill.

US does not get the ultimate performance version - the 2015 5.0 AWD - it had it all. Our friends to the North did get that version, though...

Cutting weight & cost I can see but I doubt they had a meaningful impact on weight, maybe 10 pounds for the shades? buyers like me who were cross shopping LS460 and other V8 Luxo barges the missing shades and CDC stand out. Dropping the CDC probably saved them some serious coin depending on the supplier, as does going from two trims to one.

v8 to me means effortless, quiet acceleration and the Sport mode was just icing on the cake.

Back when the 2015's first came out, the vast majority of the automotive press preferred the V6 suspension over the V8 adjustable suspension. I think that if it has been discontinued on the V8, that is the reason why (and since it does cost more to provide it). Also, they need to have some features on the Equus (G90) that are not on the Genesis.
