  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 5.0 Muffler Swap and Complications...

My vehicle before the Genny was a Tundra pickup with the 5.7 V8. I put an exhaust on that was nothing but 2 10" bullet style mufflers. But the secret to not having any drone was a Helmholtz resonator. The difference before and after putting on that peice of pipe was amazing. I wish more exhaust systems would utilize them...

Anyone know if this guy is still selling these cutouts? What's nice about them is that they are fully adjustable not just fully closed or 100% open. Also, anyone have any experience with using the 2nd cat delete pipes? Any benefit with just the stock exhaust?

I have the QTP system installed on my car and the amount they are open can be adjusted fully. Totally open or completely closed and anywhere in between.

video is of them being fully open

My experience with adding a Magnaflow "X" muffler/pipe was no material change in drone. This "X" pipe vs. "H" connector (Hyundai OEM) is unsettled in my opinion. I know from personal experience that an X changes tone a bit. Have not seen any hp increases/decrease with any change.

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread but I went through this process with my 5.0 over the summer. Threw money at the exhaust with great patience shown by my local custom muffler shop... tried just adding Magnaflow..(huge 125hz drone)... then added x-pipe..(no change still drone)... then resonator delete..(drone got louder)... then decided to go all out after a lot more research (typically looking at other mf kits esp newer jag/merc/mazer).... settled on 2.5" custom mandrel bent pipe from the primary down pipes to the tail with 2nd cat delete, 28" thrush glass-pack resonators in the intermediate pipes and Dynomax VTs at the rear (modified to keep valves open, they rattled even with the padding) and the end result is a true dual (no crossover) system with minor additional rumble (growl) at cruising speed (no drone..still luxury car) and a menacing WOT that makes ricers lose control of their bladder... LOVE IT!

Some pics of the RTA (frequency analysis) done before and after major sections are on this thread http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?18698-Dynomax-VT&p=229518#post229518 ...

When you had the Magnaflow system, was it the entire 19116 kit, or just replacement mufflers in the rear? I like the plot of that setup, other than the 125hz spike. I keep thinking of doing something simple like mufflers and then adding some Helmholtz pipes to kill that 125 bump... How much did your final setup cost?

Any links to videos of the setup?

At first I just replaced the stock mufflers with Magnaflow... WOT was impressive but the drone and resonant vibrations were terrible. From the inside of the vehicle it sounded like a shop vac during normal driving...aside from the audible sound a disarming amount of resonance was generated in the center console which would in time destroy the fit/function of the buttons and trim.

I did a resonator delete, in the middle of all that I also welded in a pair of Helmholtz resonators tuned to remove the 125Hz peak. Because the tone was being generated at the tail, the Helmholtz resonators had no effect. I didn't include a plot of the Hemholtz resonators because they literally did nothing. (The resonator could not be installed at the muffler location due to space constraints)

At the end of it all I threw about $1200 while "tuning" the exhaust to the sound I wanted. If I had just gone to the setup I have now, the total cost would have been around $500. (I purchased the DynomaxVT on-line and the Thrush GP at a local Oreily. My muffler shop in Gainesville has some talented fabricators and showed great patience while accepting my money :-)
