Here is the latest as of February 26th, 2018. The replacement of the instrument panel junction block did not correct my starting issues. It took about a week for it to happen again but then every couple of days the car would not start. I called Hyundai / Genesis care and opened a case. I took the car back to service today. The outcome today was the following. 'Shop foreman finds connector pin in harness to shifter interlock area / gear selector out of alignment. Adjusted pin and OK at this time.' Of course I will let you know if this actually corrects it or if there is another remedy. Stay tuned....
Hey Abfab - did the "realignment" of the pin solve your problem? I have a '15 Htrac and my issue is similar . When I start it in the morning, never a problem. When I start it at lunch and drive to the gym, usually ok. When I go to leave the gym I depress the brake. Hit the button, and it false fires repeatedly until it either starts or gives up. Did it less frequently at first...now it does it to me daily. I had it in to be looked at last week. Hyundai dealer had not heard of the problem with the Genesis before (seems surprising). Best solution they had was to try and charge me $434 for a new AGM battery. I declined, because I wasn't convinced that was the problem. I charged the battery at home and got it up to 100% and 12.8V, which makes me think the battery is ok, just slightly low since I drive many short trips between long trips, so the battery probably doesn't get fully charged too often.
Anyways, I have ordered another battery for $200 and will install myself if that is the problem. The battery comes tomorrow, so I will install it and see what happens before I take it back in. But I also notice a change in brake pressure whenever it misfires at startup. It really feels like it needs to turn over like one more time and it would start every time. But I am tired of this problem. Slightly humiliating to be chilling in your luxury vehicle with the starter trying to turn over repeatedly while bystanders look and laugh (ok maybe not). I can only imagine it is eating away at the life of my starter. I am still under the 5/60k warranty as it only has 32500 miles on it.
I have a 2018 sport and have this issue. Per reading on this forum it seems to affect some cars. I wish I could help you but so far the dealer was not able to duplicate. I know first hand It’s very frustrating to experience this, I hope they can help you.
Hi. After having my car for 10 days, I got it back from the dealer. All they did was replace the starter. So far I am 3 for 3 on successful starts. So I am hoping that continues. Not sure why their first instinct wasn't starter...but hopefully we have the problem licked.weed, what's the status? Was it a bad starter???

I was disappointed that they initially diagnosed a bad battery. They could have charged it and attempted the replicate it with a full charge and riled that out. I am glad I did the battery myself for 175 instead of paying them 320+. I guess I have a super battery for a solar panel project now that I have a spare. They want your money, plain and simple. I had (and still have) a rough idle on cold starts for about 20 seconds. The suggested a top engine clean and paid $260 after a week of thinking of why I shouldn't. They said they will not look any further until that cleaning is done. Still have the rough idle but picked up about 2 mpg's from it. What I find amusing is that they indicated a misfire in cylinder #4 on the *amn service printout. I'll be going back to get it looked at and fixed. I am coming to find out warranties aren't as good as they sound, at least for Hyundai.
Had this same issue where my car would not start. 2015 genesis sedan 5.0 ultimate. First time I took it to the dealership they charged my battery said that it was in need of a charge. The issue of my car not starting happened again 2 weeks later. I made videos of myself pressing on the brake and start button showing car would not start. Showed these videos to the dealer. I took it back to the dealer and told them a towing company put my car in neutral and back to park and it would start right up. dealership replaced my battery with a new one. Again 2 weeks past and it happened again usually occurs in the morning. Towing company came by and trouble shooted, pressed the start button where the car electronics would light up pressed on the brake put the car in neutral than back to park. Car would start up instantly there after. I knew it was some sort of sensor malfunction or failing sensor. Told this information to the dealer with new videos of my car not starting. This time they replaced 3 sensors the switch assembly-stop lamp even though my rears lights worked, lever assembly-atm, switch-inhibitor. Car works perfect now! Its been over a month with no issues. FYI.
Literally, the exact same thing I have been banging my head against the wall for the last several months! 2015 3.8L. Completely random, NEVER does it at the dealer and has been towed there twice. They have kept it for an equivalent of 3 weeks trying to duplicate the problem (they have it right now as well). I just called to see if they could check out the inhibitor switch. Can you tell me how you started the car in neutral?Exact same issue here. Been dealing with it for 3 months on my 2015 3.8. Of course the car always started at the dealership but failed at random for me. Had it towed in the first time and they changed the starter. The issue still persisted. It was until I recorded the issue and showed the dealership that they looked and determined it was a faulty inhibitor. Shout out to my tow truck guy who showed me how to start the car in neutral or I’d be stuck without a clue. Waiting for the inhibitor to be ordered and hoping that helps.
Thank you for the response. UPDATE: after another 2 weeks at the dealer, they still were not able to replicate. They promised to send a tech to my car if it happens again (as it always starts when it gets to the dealer). Since the car is over 4 yrs old and spent a good portion of its life in Texas (now in Ohio), I went ahead and replaced the battery. I’m operating on an extended warranty that runs out soon so fingers crossed.I know the fix!! I had the same problem on my 2015 3.8 sedan. Pushed the start button and nothing. Hard brake pedal. It was towed to the dealer several times. The dealer was told to replace the inhibitor switch (did that), then the junction box (did that). Finally, they agreed to replace the starter and that fixed the problem. The service manager thought that was the problem all along but Hyundai was not convinced. Its a big job because of its location.
My issue with startup just started - not sure if it’s starter, spark plugs or what. Also experiencing hard idling. If it is cranking, it is not the starter. All that does is turn the engine. How many miles on the spark plugs? Could be other ignition problems too.My issue with startup just started - not sure if it’s starter, spark plugs or what. Also experiencing hard idling. Thoughts?
