2015 Starting Issues

Here is the latest as of February 26th, 2018. The replacement of the instrument panel junction block did not correct my starting issues. It took about a week for it to happen again but then every couple of days the car would not start. I called Hyundai / Genesis care and opened a case. I took the car back to service today. The outcome today was the following. 'Shop foreman finds connector pin in harness to shifter interlock area / gear selector out of alignment. Adjusted pin and OK at this time.' Of course I will let you know if this actually corrects it or if there is another remedy. Stay tuned....

Hey Abfab - did the "realignment" of the pin solve your problem? I have a '15 Htrac and my issue is similar . When I start it in the morning, never a problem. When I start it at lunch and drive to the gym, usually ok. When I go to leave the gym I depress the brake. Hit the button, and it false fires repeatedly until it either starts or gives up. Did it less frequently at first...now it does it to me daily. I had it in to be looked at last week. Hyundai dealer had not heard of the problem with the Genesis before (seems surprising). Best solution they had was to try and charge me $434 for a new AGM battery. I declined, because I wasn't convinced that was the problem. I charged the battery at home and got it up to 100% and 12.8V, which makes me think the battery is ok, just slightly low since I drive many short trips between long trips, so the battery probably doesn't get fully charged too often.

Anyways, I have ordered another battery for $200 and will install myself if that is the problem. The battery comes tomorrow, so I will install it and see what happens before I take it back in. But I also notice a change in brake pressure whenever it misfires at startup. It really feels like it needs to turn over like one more time and it would start every time. But I am tired of this problem. Slightly humiliating to be chilling in your luxury vehicle with the starter trying to turn over repeatedly while bystanders look and laugh (ok maybe not). I can only imagine it is eating away at the life of my starter. I am still under the 5/60k warranty as it only has 32500 miles on it.

I have a 2018 sport and have this issue. Per reading on this forum it seems to affect some cars. I wish I could help you but so far the dealer was not able to duplicate. I know first hand It’s very frustrating to experience this, I hope they can help you.

Thank you. The dealer and tech were actually able to duplicate the problem while I had it in the shop. That was great news. The not so great is that it did it again the very next day after the battery had a full charge :) But it always starts first try in the mornings. The weather is finally getting nice in Ohio...would love to be back to enjoying my genesis with the moonroof open! Driving my 2000 F-150 for now, because I am tired of wondering if my car will start for me or not.

I replaced the battery with a new ACDELCO PROFESSIONAL AGM battery last night. Same issues. One failed start last night and another this morning. It did start eventually both times, just not on the first try after depressing the brake and hitting the start button. Back to the dealer we go...

Update but no solutions as of yet - able to recreate the issue on demand. Drove it to the gym the other day, came out after to return to work and it would not start after trying 6-10 times. Didn't want to run my battery all the way down by continuing to try. Hooked up to someone's jumper cables and it struggled but started after a few attempted turns on the first try. Drove it straight to the dealer. The Hyundai dealer is going to replace the starter and we will see if that fixes it.

I did try to bypass the brake switch by doing the "acc/on/hold start for 30 seconds" method, and had the same problem. Also tried starting via blulink and had the same problem. Hopefully it is just a bad starter. Either way, I am glad to get a new starter after all the stress the OEM one was under after so many failed starts.

weed, what's the status? Was it a bad starter???

Hi. After having my car for 10 days, I got it back from the dealer. All they did was replace the starter. So far I am 3 for 3 on successful starts. So I am hoping that continues. Not sure why their first instinct wasn't starter...but hopefully we have the problem licked.

They want your money, plain and simple. I had (and still have) a rough idle on cold starts for about 20 seconds. The suggested a top engine clean and paid $260 after a week of thinking of why I shouldn't. They said they will not look any further until that cleaning is done. Still have the rough idle but picked up about 2 mpg's from it. What I find amusing is that they indicated a misfire in cylinder #4 on the *amn service printout. I'll be going back to get it looked at and fixed. I am coming to find out warranties aren't as good as they sound, at least for Hyundai.

I was disappointed that they initially diagnosed a bad battery. They could have charged it and attempted the replicate it with a full charge and riled that out. I am glad I did the battery myself for 175 instead of paying them 320+. I guess I have a super battery for a solar panel project now that I have a spare.

All of the starter work was performed free of charge thanks to the warranty. I hope you are able to get them to honor your warranty.

Hopefully that solves the issue weed. Let us know if it doesn't.

Had this same issue where my car would not start. 2015 genesis sedan 5.0 ultimate. First time I took it to the dealership they charged my battery said that it was in need of a charge. The issue of my car not starting happened again 2 weeks later. I made videos of myself pressing on the brake and start button showing car would not start. Showed these videos to the dealer. I took it back to the dealer and told them a towing company put my car in neutral and back to park and it would start right up. dealership replaced my battery with a new one. Again 2 weeks past and it happened again usually occurs in the morning. Towing company came by and trouble shooted, pressed the start button where the car electronics would light up pressed on the brake put the car in neutral than back to park. Car would start up instantly there after. I knew it was some sort of sensor malfunction or failing sensor. Told this information to the dealer with new videos of my car not starting. This time they replaced 3 sensors the switch assembly-stop lamp even though my rears lights worked, lever assembly-atm, switch-inhibitor. Car works perfect now! Its been over a month with no issues. FYI.

Exact same issue here. Been dealing with it for 3 months on my 2015 3.8. Of course the car always started at the dealership but failed at random for me. Had it towed in the first time and they changed the starter. The issue still persisted. It was until I recorded the issue and showed the dealership that they looked and determined it was a faulty inhibitor. Shout out to my tow truck guy who showed me how to start the car in neutral or I’d be stuck without a clue. Waiting for the inhibitor to be ordered and hoping that helps.

Literally, the exact same thing I have been banging my head against the wall for the last several months! 2015 3.8L. Completely random, NEVER does it at the dealer and has been towed there twice. They have kept it for an equivalent of 3 weeks trying to duplicate the problem (they have it right now as well). I just called to see if they could check out the inhibitor switch. Can you tell me how you started the car in neutral?

I know the fix!! I had the same problem on my 2015 3.8 sedan. Pushed the start button and nothing. Hard brake pedal. It was towed to the dealer several times. The dealer was told to replace the inhibitor switch (did that), then the junction box (did that). Finally, they agreed to replace the starter and that fixed the problem. The service manager thought that was the problem all along but Hyundai was not convinced. Its a big job because of its location.

Thank you for the response. UPDATE: after another 2 weeks at the dealer, they still were not able to replicate. They promised to send a tech to my car if it happens again (as it always starts when it gets to the dealer). Since the car is over 4 yrs old and spent a good portion of its life in Texas (now in Ohio), I went ahead and replaced the battery. I’m operating on an extended warranty that runs out soon so fingers crossed.

I'm having issues with my 2009 4.6 being DEAD. I use a batter boost and start the car - took it to Interstate Battery to have them test the not even 18 month old battery. Battery test very high on CCA, but only 4 volts? Employee stated the battery was in excellent condition, but he was unsure why the battery was only putting out 4 volts. He mentioned that the started might be bad or there might be something draining the battery. Recommended that I go home and charge my battery, which I did.

Before I attempted to start the car I tested the battery percentage, which read at 100%. My lights turned on in my car when I opened the door so I had high hopes, but the car clicked a few times then went dark/dead.

I checked the battery after this and it read 1 volt and 0% battery. WTF

Lastly, I put the charger back on the battery and it zips from 0% to 99% in less than a minute, but the battery never gets to 100% and now the battery seems like it won't hold a solid charge.

I have a 4 post lift, so I put the car up in the air and tapped the hard-to-get-to starter with the handle of my rubber mallet, but this did not get it started.

Any ideas? I'm going to call Interstate battery and give them this info and see what they say.

Update - had Interstate check my battery a 2nd time, but this time I removed the battery and brought it to them to test. My home testing shows this battery is junk. Interstate said it was at 100% charge, but the two employees helping me seem to lack experience and training and they really have no idea what they were doing. I decided to buy a new battery anyway, they gave me a discount and the new battery completely solved my problem.

My issue with startup just started - not sure if it’s starter, spark plugs or what. Also experiencing hard idling. Thoughts?

If it is cranking, it is not the starter. All that does is turn the engine. How many miles on the spark plugs? Could be other ignition problems too.
