  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2015 5.0 Ultimate is just 5 months old. Now I found out they released a major update (usb and sd) that fixes many things with nav system and who knows what else plus regular map update. What is upsetting is they want $330.00 for this update.
Does anyone know what it cost the dealer? Is this something the dealer should install since car is just 5 months old?
Just doesn't seem right to keep dumping money into this car and car is not even 1 year old yet. This bug me way more than the tire issue.

Don't count on any help. You buy the product when and how it is. Updates come along. A car is no different than an iPhone. You buy the 6 today and then in Sept Apple comes with the 6S. They aren't going to give me a new phone.

A new car update and new options and such are always coming along. You have what you have. If you want the update you will need to buy it I'm sure.

Typically NAV system updates are a big source of profit for dealers, but some members have been successful in persuading dealers to update them for free within the first year. You might want to contact your salesperson and complain.

In the future I expect that NAV systems will be integrated with smartphones or work the same way by accessing internet via LTE and not use embedded fixed systems. Most likely NAV will be an app that runs on the screen and uses your smartphone. Automakers like the profit of the NAV systems today but they won't be able to sustain that particular revenue stream as everyone adopts smartphones and data becomes less expensive and more available in remote places. Even in remote locations the system could simply download from Google maps and temporarily store the information. It's coming.

But for today - plan to pay up.

The update cost to the dealer is $165.

EZ, what specifically is wrong with your Nav system that this update fixes?

You might want to update your user profile to indicate the specific model you bought. Otherwise, Genesis ownership will always be "in your dreams." Go to User CP at the top of the page.

Most companies will update software for free until a major revision is released. That is what we are talking about here. Maps are generally updated once a year and like Garmin have a lifetime update. So it seems like Hyundai is taking advantage of the situation and bleeding the last dollar from their customers.
This is my 5th Hyundai car over the years so my loyalty to Hyundai has hit rock bottom and Hyundai needs to rethink what got them where they are today.

As far as the 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate goes this is a excellent car.

I don't know of any auto manufacturers that provide free map updates. Can you name one?

I am not talking about portable devices like Garmin, which provides free quarterly updates if the model number ends in LM or LMT.

Sorry to imply free updates for in dash GPS. They are generally updated once a year and cost around $60 - $100 per update, I don't have a problem with that.

Where they are charging $330.00 for this update because it fixes a bunch of software bugs they have and adds a few new features/make it certain items work that didn't work or work very well.

I think most automakers charge more than $60-100 per update, especially the ones that compete against the Genesis (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, etc). Part to the problem is the amount of labor involved by the dealer for the Nav included in the Ultimate Package. The other Genesis Nav systems can updated by the customer by downloading the software at www.mapnsoft.com

As I mentioned, try escalating the issue at your selling dealer, since your car is less than a year old. They are not obligated to do it for free, but according to other members some have complied. At the very least you should be able to negotiate a hefty discount.

So, what bugs does it fix?

I know of not one auto mfg that gives free updates. Also they are all more than $60 to $100. If you purchased the car a month ago then "maybe" the selling dealer would consider helping you. But 5 months.... Not gonna happen. The selling dealer would have to burden the cost and why should they? Also Hyundai is not likely to do anything. It's not a safety issue. There is no recall campaign. The NAV system works as designed. It's been 5 months since you purchased the car and the car was likely mfg more than 1 yr ago.

You will either need to pay for the update. Use your smartphone if you happen to come across one of the very rare roads that isn't already in the map. Or just live with it.

Cars do not come with lifetime updates.
