  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All
Quick questions: what is the reason Hyundai detuned Genesis engines (both V8 and V6)? Heavier cars and less HP is not an ideal combination....

There was a noticeable increase in torque, which is also very important for a heavier car. Both torque and HP are improved at a lower point in the RPM range starting in 2015.

+1

It's not so much how much power an engine generates, it's how it makes power that matters. I think if you looked at a power graph, the old engines would have a higher peak but the new engines would make similar or more power and torque at low and mid range rpms.

drive both, you will feel a noticeable difference in the performance. In my opinion the 5.0 is in no way a slouch even with less hp rating.

I believe he(or she) is referring to the fact that both engines have lower HP ratings in 2015 than they did in 2014 - He was not comparing the V6 to the V8!

It's only 9 hp in the V8, not noticeable by anyone's butt dyno.

I was referring to the comparision between the prior gen v6 and current gen v6 and the prior gen 5.0 with the current gen 5.0, not the v6 compared to the v8.

I drove both generations and despite the numbers I felt both the 3.8 and 5.0 felt stronger especially in lower rpms.

Ah, OK - my misinterpretation. Not something most of us can do, but good info and consistent with what Hyundai claimed for the re-tuning they did for 2015. Thanks!

agreed and even less than the regular to premium fuel difference (13 hp) - not that HP registers on the butt dyno anyhow - that's usually all about torque.

I think you can feel similar power to the 1st genesis if you put it on ECO mode

keep in mind the 2nd gen now has 3 modes of driving. The 5.0 gets crazy when you put it on Sport mode, but that means it gets a lot thirstier with fuel.

I feel under max acceleration that my 2015 V8 is slower than my former 2013 V8.
I was expecting Hyundai would compensate the extra weight on 2015 V8 model by increasing the HP.
Overall I am very happy with the way V8 puts the power to the ground it's just that I am trying to understand the rationale behind this change in HP

Since you have AWD now, that is going to feel (and be) slower than RWD.

I don't believe that people with a 2015 RWD believe their car is slower than a 2013 for 95% of driving conditions.

As to why they reduced HP and increased torque, that is precisely the correct thing to do when the weight of the car is increased, since most people are concerned with 0-100 kph (0-60 mph), and not 100-160 kph.

Agree.

I definitely don't think my 2015 5.0 is slower than previous gen 5.0. the difference in ECU mapping certainly helps.

I'd love to see a 1/4 mile race between the
2012 R Spec vs 2015 5.0 Ultimate.

My boss has a 2012 R-Spec and I have a 2015 5.0 HTRAC, I can make it happen in the spring when his R-SPEC is done hibernating for the winter.

His 2012 R-Spec raced against my 2011 4.6 a year and a half ago, I have yet to upload the footage to my YouTube. Can't comment if it was us driving.
