  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Top of windshield (where the black tint is) got smacked by rock the other day and left a small chip and all seemed fine until today I found an 8" crack sliding down the windshield.

My version of the vehicle doesn't have auto cruise or lane departure but of course there is that huge electronics housing behind the rear-view mirror that has the wiper sensor etc. So I'm wondering if I have to take the car to a windshield shop due to all the gadgetry attached to the windshield, or can Safelite do a mobile repair?

I'm going to call my insurance group to see if I have glass replacement option, if not, it looks to be at least a $500 repair from what I've researched.

Anyone with same year/model vehicle have a windshield replaced? Any tips?

Thanks,

I do know that those sensors in that windshield pod have to be recalibrated after the repair. I think my windshield had been replaced before I bought my car - as my rain sensing wipers don't work worth a damn...

Not sure if previous owner of my car replaced the window before we bought it, but my auto wipers have a mind of their own as well.

I called my insurance agent and I totally forgot we had their window replacement option so Safelite will be out at end of month to replace for $100. Apparently most of their locations are really booked up so I'll just have to stare at the crack for a while longer.

Crack is fine for a while, just avoid the car wash.

I don't carry windshield insurance as it's too expensive here in Calgary. Aftermarket windshield for my 2016 Canadian spec Luxury with useless rain sensor & w/o active cruise control or HUD or LKA is $369 installed. I've made 3 chip repairs for $40 total cost & still have the original factory windshield but it's getting pretty pitted. I may replace this spring once the rocks are gathered up here in the broken windshield capital of the world Alberta ,Canada.
