2018 G80 Homelink not working when the car is off

There is a third issue as well and that is the problem I explained in the original post. I replaced my LED bulbs to the ones Chamberlain recommended and I have still lost the programming for button 1 several times. It has less frequently now but it still loses its programming.

I had the same problem. I used one of the recommended LEDs and I still had issues. Forget about the LEDs and either try it with no bulb or use a regular one.

An LED off is an LED off, I think. Approaching the garage door from the street, all the lights in my garage are off. Wondering if in the first instant of touching the HomeLink button, that turns the lights on the garage door opener motor and screws up the link between the car and the garage door motor?

I've probably reprogrammed the HomeLink at least 3-5 times before I started keeping a log. Since I started the log, I've had to reprogram once. When I get to 5 reprograms, I'm going to complain to my dealer although I doubt that will do any good.

Since I first heard of this problem that might be linked to LED lights, I don't have any LED lights in the garage door motor.

I do have 2 theories about the problem. One, I think when touching the HomeLink button a quick press and release is better than holding the button in. And I think pressing the HomeLink button when the Genesis engine is off, also may screw up the HomeLink. I've lost the HomeLink connection while doing both of these in trying to open the door, only having to get out of the car, go through the front door to the inner garage door and open it from the inside button. However, just theories as it's failed other times as well.

FWIW, I have the Chamberlain opener. Maybe we need a poll to see if other openers work fine with the Genesis HomeLink transmitter. Carrying a hand held remote defeats the security of the HomeLink, but I'm thinking of hiding one with velcro tape under the driver's seat. PITA for a $55K car.

I should add that I'm not a daily driver and probably use the HomeLink 3-4 times a week if that.

.

The dealer will do nothing for you. Genesis buy mirrors from Gentex, the people that make HomeLink. They are the ones, along with Chamberlain that have to make thing work together. Bug them for a solution.

I programmed button 2 as well. When I lose button 1 i use button 2 to reprogram it. So far I have not lost the second button.

I'm going to give that a try EXCEPT I'm going to program all 3 buttons!!!

Call HomeLink. They are pretty good at troubleshooting and will work with you.

I have chamberlain and it works fine if I only program one button. When I tried to program a second button I always erase the first button in the process due to not following instructions carefully enough.
I am very sure that your problem is not caused by pushing the button with engine off.

I am not convinced the bulb type (LED vs CFL vs incandescent) in the garage opener is a contributing factor.
I suggest removing the bulb from the opener and testing for a few days.

For those experiencing the problem....
Q1) Does the failure occur when the opener light is on (i.e. leaving the house) and/or off (arriving home)?
Q2) Is the issue intermittent or once it fails or does it require reprogramming the car mirror to start working again?
I suspect the issue is more related to the garage opener. With the wireless remote keypad that came with my opener it often takes 3 -> 5 tries before it works.

Be aware that some openers have a limit to the number of remotes it can use/store. I recall my manual indicated 3 was the limit for my opener.
I expect if I programmed a 4th opener it would erase the 1st programmed opener. Consider erasing all remotes from the opener AND car mirror (check your opener/car manual)s ) and re-program ALL of your handheld and car mirror remotes.

I've got a Genie opener (rolling code technology), purchased in 2012, and my 2018 G80 sport has never failed to operate the garage opener.
I've also succesfully programmed (button 2) to operate my parents old school garage opener (dip switch/non-rolling code).

Since I am one of those who experiences this issue I can certainly answer your questions.

i have had two different LED bulbs in the opener. The current one is the one listed on Chamberlain's web site as being compatible with the opener. I have not tried it without the bulbs.

I have had it happen both when opening and closing the door. I would say that it has more frequently when opening the door, but it has happened both ways. In fact, it happened this morning when I was leaving for work. I use the wall mounted switch to open the door and only use the HomeLink button to close the door when I'm leaving the house.

This issue is random when it occurs. I have had times where it has happened everyday for a few days and I have gone a couple of weeks without it happening. When it does happen, the only recovery is to reprogram the button. No amount of time between tries or number of tries will recover. My opener is about 6 years old. I have only experienced this issue with the G80. My 2012 Sonata and 2004 Accord as well as the wireless keypad all work flawlessly.

I have used the bulbs listed by Chamberlain and they still produce a problem.

I suggest you try with no bulb (unless you enjoy continually reprogramming :))

LED bulbs save money when used in a lamp. The payback in a door opener is probably 175 years as they are typically on for only a couple of minutes. I'll just stick with incans there.

Use LED's in our new Lift master, not an issue with programming and works every time. Erase the buttons on the Homelink and use the Chamberlin remote to program Homelink buttons. Don't mess with the programming button on the opener.

Same problem exactly with my 2019 G70. Definitely a PITA for this car. Any updates on a solution?

I am still not convinced it's the garage opener bulb being the issue.

1) Remove the bulb(s) from the garage opener. Test for 1 week. If it works consistently, I'm wrong and use a cheap 60W INDCANDESCENT (old school) light bulb. Problem solved.

If the problem still occurs sans garage opener bulb(s) ...
2) Reset/erase all programming in the garage opener (check your manual).
Erase all saved "garages" in your G*.
Reprogram your G*0 and other cars if applicable.

If the issue remains it's mostly likely a problem with the vehicles HomeLink system. Getting dealer to replace under warranty will likely be unfruitful/PITA.

Other things to try.
3) Ensure there is nothing around the car mirror that may be interfering (parking sticker/badge, after market tinted windshield, Mardi Gras beads or underwear / bra with underwire ;).

4) Verify there is nothing between the garage opener antenna and the vehicle. The antenna is typically a small gauge insulated wire 6->8". I positioned mine from the opener vertically up to the ceiling.

5) Try programming a different button on the car. There are 3 available. Could be a simple mechanical/sporadically working button.

My 2018 G80 Homelink has worked flawlessly with a Chamberlain rolling code opener (incandescent bulbs). Car is able to open garage from about 200 yards away.

My problem has to be related to #5 because I have tried the other suggestions, unless you think maybe the ez pass behind the mirror could be the culprit?

Your EZ-Pass device may be the culprit. HomeLink mirror and EZ-Pass are both RF devices. By law (FCC I think) they are not supposed to interfere with each other, but RF does not know/follow the law. Temporarily move EZ-PASS as far away from mirror as feasible and test for 1 week.

Conversely, I interpret your post above that when your Homelink fails it must be reprogrammed to restore functionality. I'd expect the EZ-Pass to cause intermittent not permanent HomeLink failure.

What do you consider intermittent or permanent? I came home yesterday and it was not working. I continued to press it for a minute or two. Then I gave up after and reprogrammed it. It has worked since. The last time it did not work, I waited about 24 hours, tried it again. I then reprogrammed it because it still was not working.

Intermittent = Fails Monday, works Tuesday., fails Wednesday, works Thursday, repeat ....
Permanent = Fails Monday at 3:45pmEDT, Every subsequent attempt fails. Must reprogram Homelink mirror to get working again.

Based on your response it is "permanent". My condfidence in EZ-Pass being the culprit has gone down 34.6% (worse than the U.S. DOW, S+P and NASDAQ today). I'd still move the EZ-Pass to test though.

Our new 2021 GV80 requires us to start the engine in the closed garage and only then obeys the “open” command. Upon return, we need to close the door before stopping the engine. Either is BAD unless you are trying to commit suicide!!!

The Home Link site says the unit must always be powered, not just powered when the engine is running.

We also have had to reprogram the button twice. Home Link’s design may assume that the mirror’s unit always has power, so they did not need to include a memory that holds the code when the power is off.

You don't have power when you push the button twice and not the brake? That should work.

I usually open with the button on the wall when I go into the garage and close it when leaving. For the few seconds the car is running you will not die. In fact, it is often difficult today to even intentionally kill yourself in the garage. Upon return, you put the car in park, push the close button, turn off the engine. 5 seconds?
