  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Went to start my G70 today, dash lights all came on like normal, stepped on brake and hit the start button and no joy…WTF? Sort of like key fob was not present only no error message about missing key or anything. Car was in my garage so got out, locked and unlock with my key fob to verify it was in fact still talking to the car and it was. Trunk auto opened like normal when I was next to it. Tried to start again and same issue, all dash lights come on like normal but nothing happened, starter does not engage. Tried putting the key fob up next to the start button in case somehow the start system was not seeing the fob, no joy. Called Genesis from my car and told them what was going on, they wanted me to start remotely via my phone but it was in the house so she wanted me to reset the whole infotainment computer system with the tiny reset button. Was not fond of that idea for my radio presets and all customized features would be reset so told Genesis I’ll go find my phone and try that process first and if I need them further I’d call again. Got my phone and sent remote start command, car started fine, went to run my errands and upon getting back into the car and attempting to start, it started fine. So what the hell? It’s like car disassociated itself from starting with key fob somehow? My remote start command seemed to wake things up. I asked Genesis when I was talking to them originally what is the start process if the key fob battery dies or it fails to allow a normal start process and was met with silence from connected services. She said road side assistance will bring out a new fob battery if needed. So not sure what temporarily went wacky and had my remote start command not worked, I was SOL, but at least at home and not in BFE. Anyone else had this type of issue?

Was you fob in your pocket? Anything else in that pocket?
Did you try pressing the start button with the fob?

He did say he put the FOB next to the start button.

So, when you pressed the start button, did it go into accessory mode? (Radio comes on, but climate control does not)
I suspect that the brake switch was not closing. It could be marginal, or it could be that the vacuum reservoir leaked down and you were not pressing the pedal hard enough to activate the switch.

I had the emergency brake set for I normally do that when parked. The brake pedal did feel odd for it did not move and felt bottomed out. Normally does not feel that way so may be on to something if that might have been the cause?

Yeah, you have to push it enough to activate the brake switch. An almost wild guess would be about 1/4". Even with no vacuum boost, you can do that, but it takes more force than you would be used to. The parking brake set or not is not a factor (though it is best practice to always use the parking brake).

The brake pedal being down to the floor I think contributed for sure. Why it was like that and could I have mashed the crap out of it, I’m not sure? If this issue crops up again, will for sure stand on the brake pedal. I did try to release the parking brake when all this unfolded but it would not release since I had no start.

It would not have been down to the floor. It would be all the way up, but hard to press.
The vacuum booster uses vacuum from the engine to power assist the pushing of the brake pedal. It is big enough to hold a useful amount of vacuum for one or two brake presses after the engine is off. It could be that the pedal was pressed somehow after the last shutdown, or that there was some air leakage past the check valve or the valve in the booster. Sometimes that happens and clears itself. After some age ( 5 years? 10 years? 15 year?) they can get to where the vacuum is lost after only a few hours.

Way back when, cars didn't have power assist brakes, but they were drum brakes, which are not quite as hard to press and disc brakes are.

My guess is also that brake switch wasn't engaged, especially since car didn't start with the fob next to the start/stop button, and it did after the errand. How long did car sit? If just a day or two, there could be an issue with the booster vacuum check-valve, as mentioned. At least now you know to just press the brake pedal harder next time.

Guys, I do not own a G70, but my GV80 does not have a booster because it has electrically actuated brakes. I thought the G70 was the same. If you look under the hood, you will not find a break booster but an electric break actuator. The peddle should not change as far as I know. If I am correct and I am not saying I am, it was probably just a glitch in the electronics not sending the signal to the computer when the brake was depressed. Once he remote started the car, this was cleared.

2020 G70 has a vacuum brake booster.

OK then. Now I know. Like I said, my GV80 does not have one. Thanks.

The G70 is an old platform, so no 'brake-by-wire' system, no 2.5T or 3.5T, no full digital dash, etc. By the way, the GV70 has your brakes, since it has the new platform, but they're a deal-breaker for me, at least for now (don't want to deal with recalls). Fortunately, my wife didn't like the 'old person' interior at all, so no discussion needed over that. Ha ha.

I do like all the drive by wire. Works real qell and this is the 3rd year model so hopefully all is good.

Car had only set for 2 days. Had I been driving my other car and my G70 had set for 4 or 5 days, I think the modem shuts down and remote start function is inop until you start the car normally and wake the modem back up. Normally my brake pedal moves downward some when I start. Whatever it did it had zero movement. It could have come up or gone down, but it felt like it was bottomed out. If I have a repeat I’ll lean on the brakes for sure to get some movement. Appreciate the suggestions and comments from you guys.

I have had a similar situation. The brake pedal was very stiff pressed a bit hard on it and the car started.

I have a new '23 G70. It had 400 miles on it when I parked it in the garage and went away for four weeks. When I got back, the car wouldn't start. I found the brake pedal remedy on this thread and it worked great. However, after I got it started I found that the seat position setting had been erased as had the garage door opener code. Any ideas?

This advixe saved me from having my car towed to Genesis. The "mashing" down the brake pedal that was much stiffer then usual did the trick. Perhaps due to the ultra cold temps? The off things is that the first indictor of toruble was the remote start failed first. I would think the remote start functionality would rely on the brake switch?
